San Antonio Family Vacation: A Spring Break Adventure

Last updated on

Our San Antonio family vacation was leg 2 of our Spring Break Texas vacation. After we left our wonderful vacation home in San Marcos, Texas (see my Austin family vacation post), we headed out to San Antonio to meet up with cousins for a couple of nights.

Driving from San Marcos, Texas to San Antonio, Texas took about an hour.

The Alamo

Our first stop in San Antonio was, of course, The Alamo. The kids enjoyed spending some time learning about the history there.

We spent about an hour here before walking the short block to or two down to the Riverwalk. We opted not to do a river tour, but just spent a short amount of time walking around.

Then we stopped for a quick bite to eat at Jason’s Deli after we left the Riverwalk. I’d love to spend more time at the Riverwalk and eat at some of the restaurants right on the water, but with 6 kids together now that we met up with cousins, it was easier to get going quickly, and the kids were excited to get to the hotel and waterpark we were staying at.

Why San Antonio Is the Perfect Family Vacation Destination

If you’re looking for a destination that combines history, outdoor adventures, theme parks, and family-friendly resorts, a San Antonio family vacation checks all the boxes. Unlike many major cities, San Antonio offers a mix of educational attractions and kid-approved fun that appeals to toddlers, elementary-aged children, teens, and parents alike.

Families can spend the morning exploring historic sites like the Alamo, cool off with a River Walk boat cruise in the afternoon, and end the day at a resort pool or one of the city’s theme parks. The city’s compact layout also makes it easy to see several attractions without spending hours in the car.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a week-long trip, San Antonio offers enough activities to keep the entire family entertained while still maintaining a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.

Where We Stayed: San Antonio Family Vacation Resort

After looking into several Austin-area resorts with amazing pools, we decided to stay at one of the top-rated family resorts in San Antonio: the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country. It didn’t take long for us to see why this is one of the best family resorts in the Austin area. In fact, it’s one of the top resorts in all of Texas. You can read my full review of our experience at this hotel here

Lazy river, water slides, thrill slides, scavenger hunts–this hotel was a kid’s paradise. It’s truly one of the most fun hotels for kids in the U.S.

Poolside drinks are available, so I guess it’s also an adult’s paradise. We made it easy on ourselves and didn’t leave once we were at the hotel. There was a PGA event happening, so coming and going would have been difficult anyways.

Enjoying the waterpark at our resort during our San Antonio family vacation

Our last full day of our San Antonio family vacation consisted of more time hanging at the waterpark/ hotel. As much as the kids loved it, I do think one night would have been enough here if you were going to bounce around to another location. While we love water parks, the consensus between all of us is that the first half our trip was our favorite. If you haven’t checked it out–go back to Part 1 of our trip and see why.

On our last night, there was a great fireworks show at the hotel, which felt like the perfect finale for our San Antonio family vacation during Spring Break. Until next time, Texas… it’s been real!

Best Time to Plan a San Antonio Family Vacation

While San Antonio is a year-round destination, spring and fall are often the most comfortable times to visit. Temperatures are typically mild, making it easier to enjoy outdoor attractions like the River Walk, Hemisfair Park, and the San Antonio Missions.

Summer brings longer hours at theme parks and resort pools, but temperatures frequently climb into the upper 90s and beyond. If visiting during summer, plan outdoor activities early in the day and schedule indoor attractions during the hottest afternoon hours.

3-Day San Antonio Family Vacation Itinerary

Day 1: Explore Downtown San Antonio

Start your trip with a visit to the Alamo before the crowds arrive. Afterward, stroll along the San Antonio River Walk and hop aboard a Go Rio boat cruise to learn about the city’s history. Spend the afternoon at Hemisfair Park, where kids can burn off energy at Yanaguana Garden’s playground and splash pad.

Day 2: Animals and Museums

Spend the morning at the San Antonio Zoo, one of the city’s most popular family attractions. After lunch, head to the DoSeum or the Witte Museum for hands-on exhibits that are perfect for kids. End the day exploring the Pearl District and letting the kids play in the splash pad area.

Day 3: Theme Park Fun

Dedicate your final day to either SeaWorld San Antonio or Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Both offer rides and entertainment for families, making them excellent choices for older kids and teens. If you’d prefer a slower-paced day, visit the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park instead.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
