I love a Cabo family vacation.

Living in San Diego, Cabo is one of my favorite quick escapes when I’m craving sunshine, beautiful resorts, and amazing Mexican food. In just a couple of hours, you can trade homework, sports practices, and daily routines for palm trees, ocean views, and poolside margaritas.

But if you’re planning your first Cabo family vacation, there are a few things you should know before booking your trip.

Cabo isn’t quite the same as other popular Mexican beach destinations like Puerto Vallarta or Cancun. While it’s absolutely gorgeous, safe and incredibly family-friendly, there are a few surprises that catch first-time visitors off guard.

Before you pack your swimsuits and sunscreen, here’s everything you need to know about planning the perfect Cabo family vacation.

Things to Know Before Your Cabo Family Vacation

The Airport Is Farther Away Than You Think

One thing that surprises many visitors is how far the airport is from the resort zone.

Los Cabos International Airport is located about 30-45 minutes from most resorts in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Depending on traffic and where you’re staying, transfers can sometimes take even longer. It looks closer on the map, so I think this throws a lot of families off when they arrive.

I highly recommend arranging transportation before you arrive. After a long travel day, the last thing you want is to negotiate rides with transportation vendors outside the airport.

Many Beaches Are Not Swimmable

This is probably the biggest surprise for families visiting Cabo.

While Cabo has some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, many of them are not safe for swimming due to powerful waves, strong currents, and dangerous undertows.

Always pay attention to warning flags and signs posted on the beach.

The good news? There are several fantastic swimmable beaches, which I’ll cover later in this post.

Cabo Isn’t Necessarily Cheap for Your Family Vacation

Many travelers assume that everything in Mexico will be inexpensive. While you can certainly find deals, Cabo is one of Mexico’s more upscale destinations.

Restaurants in tourist areas often have prices comparable to major U.S. cities. Cocktails, resort dining, excursions, and transportation can add up quickly.

If you’re traveling as a family, it’s worth budgeting a little extra for meals and activities.

The Weather Is Fantastic Most of the Year

One reason I keep returning to Cabo is the weather.

The destination enjoys sunshine nearly year-round. Winter temperatures typically range from the mid-70s to low 80s, making it a perfect escape from colder climates. And because it sits in a tropical desert climate, it doesn’t get as humid and muggy as some of the other popular Mexico destinations. It can get pretty windy though.

And summer can be quite hot, with temperatures frequently reaching the 90s. But the resort pools make it easy to cool off.

You’ll Need Sunscreen on Your Cabo Family Vacation—and Lots of It

The Baja sun is intense.

Even on cooler days, it’s easy to get sunburned, especially if you’re spending hours by the pool or on a boat excursion. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, hats, rash guards, and plenty of water for your adventures.

Take a Boat Tour to El Arco

No Cabo family vacation is complete without seeing El Arco, the iconic rock formation at Land’s End.

Glass-bottom boats, water taxis, and guided tours all provide opportunities to get up close to this famous landmark. Kids love spotting sea lions lounging on the rocks nearby. We saw some huge sea lions on our last visit!

Go Whale Watching

If you’re visiting between December and April, whale watching is an absolute must.

Gray whales and humpback whales migrate through the area, and sightings are incredibly common. Watching a whale breach just offshore is one of those experiences your kids will talk about for years.

Spend a Day at Medano Beach on Your Cabo Family Vacation

Medano Beach is the heart of Cabo’s beach scene and one of the best places for families to enjoy the water.

The waves are typically calmer here than at many other Cabo beaches, making it a popular choice for swimming, paddleboarding, and water activities.

Explore San José del Cabo

While Cabo San Lucas gets most of the attention, don’t skip San José del Cabo.

The historic downtown area features colorful streets, local shops, art galleries, and authentic restaurants. It’s a great place to experience a quieter side of Los Cabos.

Take a Camel Ride on the Beach

This unique Cabo experience is always a hit with kids and adults alike.

Several tour operators offer guided camel rides along the desert coastline, providing beautiful views and plenty of photo opportunities.

Since beach conditions vary dramatically throughout Cabo, choosing the right beach is important.

Chileno Beach is often considered one of the best snorkeling beaches in Cabo.

The protected cove offers relatively calm water and excellent visibility for spotting tropical fish.

Santa Maria Beach

This horseshoe-shaped bay is another favorite among families.

The gentle waters make it a great place to swim and snorkel, while the scenic setting feels a bit less crowded than Medano Beach.

Palmilla Beach

Is a Cabo Family Vacation Worth It?

Absolutely.

A Cabo family vacation combines beautiful weather, luxury resorts, incredible food, outdoor adventures, and stunning scenery in one easy-to-reach destination.

While it’s important to know about the non-swimmable beaches, transportation logistics, and higher-than-expected prices, these small surprises are far outweighed by everything Cabo has to offer.

Whether you’re relaxing poolside at an all-inclusive resort, spotting whales offshore, snorkeling in crystal-clear water, or watching the sunset over El Arco, Cabo has a way of creating the kind of family memories you’ll be talking about long after you return home.

For Southern California families especially, it’s hard to beat having a tropical getaway this close to home. When I’m shorter on time, I love a trip to Puerto Vallarta since having many of the best family resorts so close to the airport make the travel days easier.
