Mexico Travel Safety Tips for Families (What You Really Need to Know)

If you’ve ever planned a trip to Mexico with kids, you’ve probably asked the same question most parents do:
“Is Mexico safe for families?”
The short answer? Yes—with the right preparation.
Mexico is one of the most popular family vacation destinations in the world, with places like Puerto Vallarta, Cancún, and Cabo San Lucas welcoming millions of families every year. And while headlines can sometimes sound alarming, most tourist areas are well-developed, well-patrolled, and designed with visitors in mind. We’ve been to all of these Mexico vacation cities, with and without kids, and we’ve been lucky not to have any issues.
We had a trip to Puerto Vallarta planned for early March, just a couple of weeks after the incidents with the cartel in February. It was a tough decision that we had to make, but I was sure to do my own research and follow the news closely. We ended up keeping our travel plans and felt extremely safe the entire time we were there.
That said, traveling with kids always requires a little extra planning. Here’s everything you need to know to feel confident and prepared for your travels to Mexico.
Is Mexico Safe for Families?

For the vast majority of travelers, Mexico is a safe and enjoyable destination—especially in resort areas.
Popular destinations tend to have:
- Strong tourism infrastructure
- Visible security and police presence
- Resorts with gated access and trained staff
- Family-friendly excursions and activities
- Plenty of English speakers to help answer your questions
Most safety concerns involve petty theft or scams, not violent crime—and those risks can be minimized with simple precautions.
Choose the Right Location (This Matters Most)

Where you stay in Mexico makes a huge difference.
Family-friendly destinations like:
- Puerto Vallarta – Check out the best things to do with kids in Cabo
- Riviera Maya
- Los Cabos – Check out these fun things to do with kids in Cabo
…are generally considered among the safest areas for tourists.
Pro tip: Stick to:
- Resort zones
- Well-reviewed hotels
- Areas with lots of foot traffic
Getting Around Safely in Mexico

Transportation is one of the easiest ways to stay safe—or accidentally put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. We always make sure to book transportation from the airport to the hotel ahead of time. This helps to avoid any scams or outrageously expensive cab rides.
Best options:
- Pre-arranged airport transfers
- Hotel transportation
- Ride-share apps like Uber (in many cities)
Avoid:
- Unofficial taxis
- Accepting rides from strangers
Protecting Your Family & Belongings

Most issues travelers encounter are preventable.
Simple habits go a long way:
- Use your hotel safe for passports and extra cash
- Don’t bring valuables to the beach or pool
- Keep bags zipped and close in crowded areas
- Consider a crossbody or anti-theft bag
Staying Safe in Mexico at Night
Even in safe destinations, nighttime awareness matters.
Stick to:
- Well-lit areas
- Busy streets and tourist zones
- Group outings (especially with kids)
Avoid:
- Isolated beaches after dark
- Wandering unfamiliar neighborhoods
Food, Water & Health Tips
No one wants a sick kid on vacation.
Tips to stay healthy:
- Drink bottled or filtered water (the resorts usually provide plenty of bottled water, and their ice is filtered)
- Be cautious with street food (choose busy vendors)
- Wash hands frequently
- Pack basic medications
Resort vs. Exploring: What’s Safer in Mexico?

Both can be safe—you just need to be intentional.
Resorts:
- Controlled environment
- On-site dining and activities
- Ideal for younger kids
Exploring:
- Great for culture and experiences
- Safe in tourist-friendly areas
- Best with planning and transportation arranged
Smart Travel Prep Before You Go
Before our Puerto Vallarta trip, I joined several different Facebook groups about Puerto Vallarta travel. I got to hear from people who were there at that very moment. I could ask questions and see what other people were asking. It made me feel so much better seeing how people felt there at that time. I think this is a great idea any time you travel–just because there could be some other issues you had no idea about that now you can prepare for.
Before your trip:
- Check U.S. travel advisories
- Share your itinerary with a friend or family member
- Screenshot important documents
- Enroll in STEP and receive alerts from the U.S. Embassy and travel advisories as necessary (it’s free!)
- Have travel insurance
The Bottom Line

Mexico is a fantastic destination for families, offering beautiful beaches, incredible food, and unforgettable experiences.
With a little planning and awareness, you can focus on what really matters: Making amazing memories with your kids.
