Welk Resort Escondido: One of San Diego’s Best Family-Friendly Resort Getaways

I had a free night to use at a Hyatt property, thanks to the Hyatt credit card, and I didn’t want it to go to waste, so I booked us a little staycation getaway at the Welk Resort in Escondido. Having grown up in San Diego, I was familiar with this property, however, we’ve never stayed there as a family. I have to say–one night at this property wasn’t enough. We definitely could’ve stayed longer, and my kids are already planning a return trip.
If you’re looking for a Southern California vacation that combines resort-style amenities with spacious accommodations, Welk Resort Escondido deserves a spot on your list. Nestled among the rolling hills of North San Diego County, this sprawling resort feels like a destination all on its own. While you’re only about 40 minutes from downtown San Diego, the peaceful setting makes it easy to forget you’re anywhere near a major city.
Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a golf getaway, or simply want a relaxing weekend with plenty to keep everyone entertained, here’s everything you need to know before booking your stay.
Why Families Love Welk Resort Escondido
I had heard a lot of good things about the Welk Resort prior to choosing to stay there. And one of the biggest reasons families return to Welk Resort Escondido year after year is the amount of space. Unlike a traditional hotel room, accommodations are villa-style and include one-, two-, and even three-bedroom layouts. Plus, they have kitchens.

Many villas feature:
- Fully equipped kitchens
- Separate living and dining areas
- Private patios or balconies
- In-unit washer and dryer
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
The pictures above show the 1-bedroom unit we stayed in. It had a separate bedroom, a kitchen and dining space, and a pull-out sofa bed in the living space. The bed was very comfortable! We were on the bottom floor and also had a small patio space that looked out onto the golf course. The upper units have balconies.

Having a full kitchen is especially helpful for families. You can prepare breakfast before heading out for the day, stock up on snacks, or enjoy a relaxed dinner after a busy afternoon at the pool.
Lawrence Welk Resort Amenities
One of the best parts about staying at Welk Resort Escondido is that you don’t necessarily have to leave the property to have an amazing vacation. This is a timeshare property, which means they offer lots of events and activities each day of the week. If you’re interested in touring the property and talking about ownership opportunities, you can stay here for really cheap. They’re constantly offering 3-night stays for $199, but you must attend a 90-minute timeshare presentation during your stay.
Here’s an overview of the amenities onsite, regardless of if you’re staying for a tour or just for a fun getaway like we did. One thing to note is that everything is very spread out. No matter which part of the resort you stay in, you won’t be in walking distance to everything (unless you’re a fan of long walks!).
Multiple Pools and Waterslides

The resort is home to several pool complexes spread throughout the property, each offering its own unique atmosphere. And it’s one of the San Diego resorts with waterslides. Families especially love the recreation centers splash areas for younger children, hot tubs, and plenty of lounge chairs for relaxing in the California sunshine.
Recreation Centers

There are multiple recreation centers where guests can enjoy:
- Game rooms
- Pool tables
- Ping pong
- Organized family activities
- Fitness facilities
- Sports courts
Kids can stay busy for hours while parents enjoy a little downtime.
Golf
Golfers will appreciate the resort’s two championship golf courses set among beautiful rolling hills and mature oak trees. Even if you’re not an avid golfer, the scenic fairways add to the peaceful atmosphere throughout the property.
Pickleball, Tennis & More
If your family enjoys staying active, you’ll find plenty of options including:
- Pickleball courts
- Tennis courts
- Basketball
- Walking paths
- Fitness center
- Arcades ($)
The resort regularly offers seasonal activities as well, so there’s often something new happening throughout the year.
Fishing Pond at the Escondido Lawrence Welk Resort

One unexpected treat for my kids was the fact that there was a fishing pond onsite. They have been obsessed with fishing this summer! You can rent a fishing rod (kids or adult-sized) for $10/ hour or $25 for the whole day (until 8pm in the summer months). They give you a bag of cut-up hotdog to use as bait. And the fishing is catch and release. This entertained my kids more than the pools did! They loved getting to fish at the Welk Resort in Escondido.
On-Site Dining
You won’t have to venture far when hunger strikes.
The resort offers:
- Canyon Grille Restaurant
- Poolside food and drinks
- A market with groceries and snacks
- Starbucks coffee
- Picnic areas and BBQ grills
Having multiple dining options makes it easy to spend an entire day enjoying the resort without leaving the property. We drove about 15 minutes to have dinner in Escondido simply because there were a lot more options down there, but we could easily have found something we enjoyed at the resort. There’s aren’t any other food options super close by, but if you drive 15-20 minutes, you’ll find just about anything you could want.
Things to Do Near the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido
I wouldn’t necessarily choose to stay at the Lawrence Welk if you’re coming to San Diego for an authentic San Diego vacation. You’ll spend too much time driving to the beach and all the other must-dos in San Diego. I’d choose one of these San Diego areas instead. But, if it’s not your first time in San Diego, or if you’re making it a staycation like we did, the Welk’s North County location makes it a great base for exploring the surrounding area.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park
One of the biggest nearby attractions is the world-famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park, located about 20 minutes away.
Families can experience:
- Safari truck tours
- Walking trails
- Animal encounters
- Giraffes, rhinos, lions, elephants, and more
It’s one of my favorite attractions in San Diego County and well worth adding to your San Diego itinerary.
Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens
Adults looking for a great meal can head to Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. The beautiful gardens, outdoor seating, and extensive beer selection make it a fun stop after a day of sightseeing.
Temecula Wine Country
If you’re traveling without young kids—or sneaking away for an adults-only afternoon—Temecula Wine Country is about half an hour away and offers dozens of wineries with gorgeous vineyard views. Many of the wineries are kid friendly as well.
Beaches
I wouldn’t stay at this resort if you want to prioritize beach time. However, if you’re using this as your home base for a San Diego vacation, at least one beach day is a must. While the resort sits inland, several beautiful North County beaches are within about 30 to 40 minutes, including:
- Moonlight State Beach
- Carlsbad State Beach
- South Ponto Beach
It’s easy to spend a beach day before returning to the quieter atmosphere of the resort.
Is Welk Resort in Escondido Worth It?

If your ideal vacation includes spacious accommodations, plenty of on-site activities, and enough amenities to keep everyone entertained, Welk Resort Escondido is an excellent choice.
It’s especially well-suited for:
- Families with kids
- Multi-generational vacations
- Golf enthusiasts
- Weekend getaways
- Travelers who prefer condo-style accommodations over standard hotel rooms
Because the property is spread across hundreds of acres, it feels much more like a vacation village than a traditional hotel. But that being said, it’s far too big to walk everywhere. You need to call for shuttles or use their little tram system. If you’re in any kind of hurry, that could be an annoyance. We just drove our own car from spot to spot, but having to move my car (and use my gas) wasn’t ideal either. There are plenty of opportunities to relax by the pool, enjoy a game of pickleball, catch a live show, or simply unwind while taking in the scenic hillside views.
Final Thoughts on the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido
Whether you’re visiting San Diego for the beaches, planning a trip to the Safari Park, or simply looking for a relaxing family getaway, Welk Resort Escondido offers an impressive combination of space, activities, and resort amenities.
With villa-style accommodations, multiple pools, waterslides, golf courses, family recreation centers, and easy access to many of Southern California’s top attractions, it’s easy to see why so many families return year after year. It actually reminded me a lot of the Palm Springs family resorts we love so much, but so much closer to home.
If you’re looking for a resort where the kids will stay entertained while the adults can actually relax, Welk Resort Escondido is definitely worth considering for your next Southern California vacation.
