October might just be my favorite month for a getaway. The summer crowds have mostly disappeared, the weather is finally cooling off in many parts of the country, and fall foliage is putting on a spectacular show. And if you’re not quite ready to trade your sandals for sweaters, there are still plenty of places where you can find sunshine and warm temperatures. I’ve always been jealous of school districts that offer a fall break. Even though we don’t get one here, I still make a point to plan at least a long weekend away every October.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy weekend surrounded by colorful leaves, a family-friendly fall adventure, a national park road trip, or a warm-weather escape, there are so many incredible October getaways to choose from.

Most of the destinations on this list are in the United States and Canada, but I included one international destination that I think is absolutely worth considering for an October trip.

Why October Is Such a Great Month for a Getaway

October is a sweet spot for travel. Summer vacation season is over, but winter hasn’t arrived yet, which means many destinations are less crowded and much more enjoyable to explore.

It’s also one of the best months for visiting national parks. Cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable, fall colors are beginning to appear across much of the country, and wildlife is often active. The National Park Service specifically highlights places like the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains and Cedar Breaks as excellent destinations for autumn scenery.

Of course, timing matters. Fall foliage can vary significantly from year to year and from one elevation to another, so if seeing peak color is your main goal, it’s worth checking local foliage reports before booking.

Here are some of the best October getaways to put on your fall travel list.

1. Vermont – One of the best October getaways for fall foliage

Best for: Classic New England fall foliage

If your idea of the perfect October getaway involves winding roads, covered bridges, charming small towns and trees covered in shades of red, orange and gold, Vermont should be near the top of your list. It’s one of the most magical fall destinations for those truly looking for Autumn vibes.

October is prime leaf-peeping season in much of Vermont, making it an excellent destination for a fall road trip. Instead of staying in one place, consider spending several days driving through the Green Mountains and stopping in towns like Stowe, Woodstock and Manchester.

The beauty of Vermont is that you don’t need a packed itinerary. Drive a scenic road, stop at a farm stand, visit a local brewery or cider mill, hike for a couple of hours, and then find a cozy restaurant for dinner.

It’s the kind of trip where the scenery really is the attraction.

Don’t miss: Stowe, Smugglers’ Notch, Woodstock, the Green Mountain Byway and Vermont’s many covered bridges.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina

Best for: Families, fall foliage and outdoor adventures

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the best October getaways for families because you get gorgeous fall scenery without having to plan a complicated vacation. And the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the best national parks for families. There’s no entrance fee, lots of wildlife and plenty of easy trails to explore.

October brings cooler hiking weather and beautiful fall color to the mountains. The National Park Service recommends both scenic drives and hikes for experiencing autumn in the Smokies.

And there’s plenty to do outside the national park, too.

Stay in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge for easy access to restaurants, attractions and family entertainment, or choose a cabin in the mountains if you’d rather have a quieter trip.

Families can spend the morning hiking, the afternoon exploring the park and the evening enjoying everything Pigeon Forge has to offer.

You could start in Boston and work your way through New Hampshire and Vermont, or head north into Maine. I love this idea because it gives you the opportunity to hit other bucket-list worthy destinations, such as Salem in October.

One possible route could include:

Boston/ Salem → White Mountains, New Hampshire → Stowe, Vermont → Woodstock, Vermont → Lake Placid, New York

The best part about a fall road trip is that the drive between destinations becomes part of the vacation. Pull over whenever you see a particularly beautiful view, grab apple cider donuts at a farm stand and don’t worry too much about sticking to a schedule.

And if you’re looking for something even more unique, consider a fall foliage New England cruise. You can hit a similar itinerary to the one above plus enjoy all the awesome food and activities on the cruise ship.

Arches and Canyonlands national parks are both close to Moab, so you can easily combine them into one trip.

9. Sedona, Arizona

Best for: Red rocks and comfortable hiking weather

Sedona is another destination that shines once the summer heat begins to fade.

October brings much more comfortable temperatures for hiking and exploring the area’s spectacular red-rock formations. The scenery is completely different from the traditional fall destinations on this list, which is exactly why I love it as an October getaway.

You can spend your days hiking and exploring and your evenings enjoying Sedona’s restaurants and beautiful sunsets.

And if you have more time, combine Sedona with a trip to the Grand Canyon.

10. San Diego, California

Best for: Extending summer

If you’re not ready for fall yet, head to Southern California.

October can be an excellent time to visit San Diego, especially if your goal is to squeeze in one more beach vacation before winter. In fact, I always say that October is San Diego’s best kept secret. The summer crowds have thinned out, but beach days are still very much possible. October tends to be one of the warmest months. And the sunsets are unbelievable.

October also brings plenty of seasonal activities, including pumpkin patches, Halloween events and fall festivals. And you’ll find some great Dia de los Muertos festivities as well.

This is one of the easiest October getaways for families because you can mix beach time with attractions like the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, LEGOLAND California and the USS Midway.

Don’t miss: La Jolla, Coronado, Torrey Pines, Balboa Park and a sunset at one of San Diego’s beaches.

11. New Orleans, Louisiana

Best for: Food, culture and Halloween

October is a fantastic time to visit New Orleans if you want a city getaway with a little spooky-season fun.

The temperatures are generally much more comfortable than during the hot and humid summer months, making it easier to explore the French Quarter and surrounding neighborhoods on foot.

And if you’re traveling with older kids or teens, New Orleans can be a particularly fun October destination because of the city’s haunted history and ghost tours. There’s also plenty of fun things to do in New Orleans, even with younger kids.

Of course, you’ll also want to eat your way through the city.

Beignets, gumbo, jambalaya, po’boys and crawfish étouffée should all be on the itinerary. I would go back to New Orleans in a heartbeat and just do a food tour.

12. Québec City, Canada – One of the best international October getaways

Best for: European charm without crossing the Atlantic

Want an international-feeling getaway without flying halfway around the world?

Head to Québec City.

For the one international destination I’d absolutely consider adding to an October getaway list, Mexico City gets my vote.

October is a particularly interesting time to visit because the city begins preparing for Día de los Muertos. While the main celebrations occur around the end of October and beginning of November, the city starts coming alive with colorful decorations and festivities beforehand.

The weather is also generally comfortable for exploring the city. And there is an almost endless list of things to do.

Visit the historic center, explore museums, eat incredible food, take a day trip to Teotihuacán and experience the city’s unique neighborhoods.

If you time your trip for late October, you may even be able to experience some of the beginning Día de los Muertos celebrations.

Don’t miss: Zócalo, Frida Kahlo Museum, Chapultepec Park, Teotihuacán and the canals of Xochimilco.

Want to stay warm? San Diego is an easy choice, while destinations such as Southern California and parts of the Southwest offer a nice break from cooler fall temperatures.

Want a city getaway? New Orleans, Montréal and Mexico City all offer something completely different.

Want an outdoor adventure? Moab, Sedona, Acadia and Alberta are hard to beat.

And if you’re chasing fall foliage, remember that October timing matters. Peak color doesn’t arrive everywhere at the same time. For example, higher elevations and northern locations typically change earlier. Check local foliage predictions before finalizing your dates.

One of the reasons I love October travel is that there’s really no wrong answer.
