I absolutely love fall. Football, flannels, pumpkins… what’s not to love? The irony is that I live in Southern California, and while everyone else is pulling out sweaters and sipping hot cider in crisp 60-degree weather, there’s a decent chance we’re heading to the pumpkin patch in shorts and sweating through an 85-degree October afternoon. But at least we have some pretty awesome pumpkin patches and Halloween events to choose from in Southern California.

In fact, some of the best Halloween and fall activities are in Southern California. You’ll find everything from huge pumpkin patches and old-fashioned harvest festivals to incredible nighttime pumpkin displays and theme parks completely transformed for Halloween.

And because I’m always looking for things we can actually enjoy as a family, this list isn’t going to be 20 haunted houses that will traumatize your 7-year-old. Nor will it only be Southern California pumpkin patches that are fun for kids under five. I’ve focused on a wide range of family-friendly Southern California Halloween events, with a few genuinely scary options toward the end for older kids and teens.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect pumpkin patch, a festive fall day trip, or somewhere to wear those Halloween costumes more than once, here are some of the best Southern California fall activities to add to your family’s bucket list.

Best Pumpkin Patches & Fall Events in Southern California

1. Night of the Jack — Calabasas

If you want a Halloween activity that feels magical rather than terrifying, Night of the Jack should be near the top of your list.

Held at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas, Night of the Jack features a mile-long immersive walking trail filled with glowing pumpkins, larger-than-life lantern art, lights, projection mapping and elaborate Halloween displays. For 2026, the trail has been reimagined with new installations, photo opportunities and themed environments. There are also food trucks, a hay maze, face painting, a pumpkin slide and seasonal drinks for the adults at the Spookeasy.

One of the things I like most about Night of the Jack is that it gives you all the Halloween atmosphere without having actors jumping out and terrifying the kids. It’s spooky enough to feel special but still designed for families.

The 2026 event runs on select nights from September 25 through November 1, with timed trail entry beginning after dark. Advance tickets and parking are required, and popular nights can sell out.

Best for: Families who want a magical nighttime Halloween experience.

2. Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch — Orange

For that classic pumpkin-patch experience, it’s hard to beat Irvine Park Railroad Pumpkin Patch.

Located inside Irvine Regional Park, this is especially good for families with younger kids because there’s so much more to do than simply wander around looking for a pumpkin.

Kids can ride the train, take a wagon ride, bounce in the moon bounce, decorate cookies and participate in other seasonal activities. And, of course, there are plenty of pumpkins and adorable fall photo opportunities.

The 2026 Pumpkin Patch runs September 12 through October 31. Weekday admission doesn’t require reservations, but reservations are required on select weekends later in the season. There is also a separate vehicle entrance fee for Irvine Regional Park.

Best for: Toddlers and elementary-aged kids.

3. Carved at Descanso Gardens — La Cañada Flintridge

If you’re looking for one of the prettiest fall activities in Southern California, this may be it.

Carved at Descanso Gardens takes an already beautiful botanical garden and transforms it into an illuminated fall wonderland after dark.

You’ll walk among glowing jack-o’-lanterns, enormous hand-carved pumpkins, illuminated railroad displays, whimsical wood spirits and other light installations tucked throughout the gardens. The result feels much more magical and artistic than scary.

Carved runs October 2 through November 1 in 2026. And if you’re looking for something to do on Halloween night itself, Descanso is hosting trick-or-treating during Carved on October 31, complete with crafts, a miniature pumpkin patch and a dance party.

This would be one of my top choices for families with older kids who have started to outgrow traditional pumpkin patches but still want to do something festive together.

Best for: A beautiful family night out.

4. Fort Cross Autumn Jubilee — Santa Ysabel/Julian

This one deserves way more attention, especially if you’re in San Diego County.

Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures is located in the Julian area, and its Autumn Jubilee is exactly the kind of fall day trip I love. You get the mountain setting, Julian’s famous apple season and plenty of old-fashioned activities for the kids.

The 2026 Julian Autumn Jubilee takes place Saturdays and Sundays from September 26 through October 25.

Depending on the package you choose, activities can include a hayride, cider-pressing demonstration, farm animals, an interactive reptile show, candle dipping, crafts, treasure hunts and a hoedown with a jug band. General admission also includes access to the pumpkin patch, spooky maze, photo spots, walking trails, lawn games and other areas around the farm. There’s also a haunted hayride after dark that’s designed for older kids and adults.

And here’s my suggestion: make a full Julian day out of it. Julian is on my list of the best fall destinations for a reason! Do Fort Cross, head into Julian for apple pie, wander around town and enjoy some actual cooler mountain air. It’s one of the easiest ways to pretend Southern California has a proper fall.

5. Tanaka Farms — Orange County – One of the pumpkin patches in Southern California that’s on a working farm

Another Orange County favorite, Tanaka Farms is a great choice if you’d rather visit an actual working farm than a pop-up pumpkin lot.

One thing to know for 2026 is that Tanaka Farms’ public pumpkin-patch experience is at Hana Field in Costa Mesa, rather than its Irvine farm. Hana Field’s Pumpkin Patch opens October 3 and features pumpkins fresh off the vines, a flower field, barnyard animals, a Jurassic Fright Corn Maze, a cow train and other activities. Reservations are required.

I love experiences like this because kids get a little more of that real farm feeling along with all the cute fall photo ops.

Best for: Families who want a farm-style pumpkin patch experience.

Tanaka Farms and Hana Field

6. Underwood Family Farms Fall Harvest Festival — Moorpark – One of the more traditional pumpkin patches in Southern California

If you’re willing to devote an entire day to your pumpkin patch adventure, Underwood Family Farms is one of the best choices on this list.

The annual Fall Harvest Festival is huge. In 2026, it runs September 26 through October 31 and includes a giant pumpkin patch, pick-your-own produce and flowers, tractor-pulled wagon rides, animals, games, rides, photo opportunities and live entertainment. Weekends also feature themed programming, bands and demonstrations.

This isn’t the place where you pop in, buy a pumpkin and leave 30 minutes later. Plan to hang out.

If your vision of the perfect fall day involves kids running around a farm, pumpkins everywhere and enough activities to keep everyone busy for hours, this is the one.

Best for: The ultimate Southern California fall festival.

7. Cal Poly Pomona PumpkinFest — Pomona – A fun twist on a Southern California pumpkin patch

Here’s another one to put on your radar if your family loves a traditional pumpkin patch.

The Cal Poly Pomona PumpkinFest returns for its 33rd year in 2026 and runs on weekends from October 10 through October 31. Attractions include the pumpkin patch, petting farm, corn maze and hayrides.

Because this event is connected to Cal Poly Pomona’s Huntley College of Agriculture, it has more of an agricultural-festival feel than some of the commercial pumpkin patches in Southern California.

Best for: A traditional pumpkin patch and harvest-festival experience.

Beyond Pumpkin Patches: Best Southern California Theme Park Halloween Events

Southern California theme parks REALLY lean into Halloween. If you’re willing to spend more than you would at a pumpkin patch, these can easily become full-day fall adventures.

8. Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort — Anaheim

It’s impossible to talk about the best Halloween activities in Southern California without including Disneyland at Halloween.

Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort runs August 21 through October 31 in 2026. You’ll find hundreds of pumpkins along Main Street, U.S.A., characters wearing Halloween costumes, seasonal food and entertainment, and Halloween touches throughout both parks.

There’s also Haunted Mansion Holiday and Halloween Screams, plus Cars Land becomes one of my favorite areas to see during Halloween.

And if you don’t want to pay for a park ticket, you can still see seasonal decorations around Downtown Disney and the Disneyland Resort hotels.

Best for: Families who want to turn Halloween into an entire Disney day.

9. Oogie Boogie Bash — Disney California Adventure

Yes, this technically happens during Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort, but Oogie Boogie Bash deserves its own spot.

This separately ticketed Halloween party takes place at Disney California Adventure on select nights from August 18 through October 31, 2026.

The big appeal for families is that this is a real Halloween party. Costumes, trick-or-treating and Disney villains make it completely different from simply visiting the parks during the Halloween season. We’ve done this just about every year and have done some epic group costumes, if I do say so myself. It’s always a lot of fun!

Tickets are notoriously popular, so this is one of those experiences you’ll want to plan well ahead for.

Best for: A splurge-worthy family Halloween experience.

10. Knott’s Spooky Farm — Buena Park

Don’t confuse this one with Knott’s Scary Farm!

Knott’s Spooky Farm is the daytime, family-friendly Halloween celebration at Knott’s Berry Farm. It runs on select days September 24 through October 31 in 2026.

Kids can trick-or-treat around Calico, see the park decked out for Halloween and enjoy seasonal activities and spooky surprises without dealing with the monsters and intense scares that arrive later for Scary Farm.

I think this is a particularly good option for kids who think they’re too old for a basic pumpkin patch but aren’t quite ready to be chased through a haunted maze.

Best for: Kid-friendly Halloween fun with theme park rides.

11. LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat — Carlsbad

If you have younger kids, LEGOLAND California’s Brick-or-Treat is easily one of the best Halloween events in San Diego.

The 2026 event takes place on select dates September 19 through November 1 and includes trick-or-treat stations, live shows, LEGO Monster meet-and-greets, costume contests, themed food and Halloween LEGO displays.

New for 2026 is Brick or Treat Street, featuring six life-sized LEGO Monster homes and an interactive Halloween light trail. And because the event is deliberately “not-too-scary,” it’s a particularly good choice for elementary-aged kids.

Even better, Brick-or-Treat is included with dated park tickets on event days.

Best for: Younger kids and LEGO lovers.

12. SeaWorld Spooktacular — San Diego

Another good San Diego Halloween event for younger families is SeaWorld Spooktacular.

The 2026 celebration takes place Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from September 11 through November 1 and is included with regular park admission. Activities include trick-or-treat stations, a pumpkin patch, Halloween entertainment, character encounters, dance parties and an all-new Baby Shark Halloween Show.

It’s an easy way to get the Halloween experience without dedicating an entire outing solely to Halloween—you can do the rides and animal exhibits and sprinkle the seasonal activities throughout your day.

Best for: Combining Halloween activities with a full theme park day.

Scary Southern California Halloween Activities for Teens

Once your kids get older, there’s a very real chance they’ll roll their eyes when you suggest another pumpkin patch.

That’s when Southern California Halloween gets REALLY fun.

These next few are much scarier and are better suited to teens and adults.

13. L.A. Haunted Hayride — Los Angeles

For older kids and teens who actually want to be scared, L.A. Haunted Hayride is one of Southern California’s classic Halloween experiences.

The signature experience is exactly what the name implies: you climb aboard a hay wagon and head into the darkness of Griffith Park, where creepy characters and elaborate scenes are waiting.

The outdoor setting is what makes this one different from your typical haunted house. There’s something about riding through Griffith Park in the dark that makes the whole experience feel extra creepy.

I would save this one for brave older kids and teens rather than younger children.

Best for: Teens who have officially outgrown the pumpkin patch.

14. Knott’s Scary Farm — Buena Park

When the sun goes down, Knott’s Spooky Farm becomes something VERY different.

Knott’s Scary Farm is one of Southern California’s iconic Halloween events, with haunted mazes, scare zones, sinister shows and more than 1,000 monsters spread throughout the park.

The 2026 event runs on select nights September 17 through October 31, and Knott’s specifically says it is not recommended for children under 13.

So no, this isn’t the one I’d choose for a cute family Halloween night with your first grader.

But if you have teenagers who love horror movies and want to be genuinely scared? They’ll probably think it’s amazing.

Best for: Teens and adults who want serious scares.

15. Halloween Horror Nights — Universal Studios Hollywood

Finally, there’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

This is another one I’d reserve for older teens and adults. Universal uses its movie-making expertise to create elaborate haunted houses, scare zones and experiences based on horror franchises.

If your family prefers pumpkins and cute ghosts, stick with the first half of this list.

If your teenager’s idea of the perfect October night is paying someone to scare the life out of them? This is probably going to be more their speed.

Best for: Horror-loving teens and adults.

Tips for Planning Southern California Pumpkin Patches & Other Fall Activities

One thing I’ve learned about fall in Southern California is that October weekends get busy FAST. Pumpkin patches that are relatively peaceful in late September can be packed by the middle of October.

If there’s a ticketed experience you really want to do—especially Night of the Jack, Carved, Oogie Boogie Bash or one of the theme park events—don’t wait until the week before Halloween to start planning.

I also love mixing the bigger ticketed events with some simpler fall traditions. Do a pumpkin patch one weekend, take a day trip to Julian or Oak Glen another weekend, and save one nighttime Halloween event for October.

And don’t forget that Southern California weather doesn’t always cooperate with our fall aesthetic. Check the forecast before putting everyone in sweaters and boots for the pumpkin patch. There’s nothing less festive than sweating through your family pumpkin photos in 90-degree heat.

Which Southern California Pumpkin Patch or Halloween Event Is Best for Your Family?

The nice thing about fall in Southern California is that there’s truly something for every age. I’ve experienced all the different levels, now that my kids are getting older. We used to do the cute, little pumpkin patches with hayrides, petting zoos and kiddie rides, but now my kids want the scare factor.

For little kids, I’d start with Irvine Park Railroad, LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat or Knott’s Spooky Farm. If you want the full pumpkin-patch experience, Underwood Family Farms is hard to beat.

For something that feels extra special after dark, Night of the Jack and Carved at Descanso Gardens are my picks because you get all the Halloween atmosphere without terrifying anyone.

And for San Diego families, I’d absolutely put Fort Cross Autumn Jubilee on your list. Between the fall festival, Julian apple season and cooler mountain setting, it’s an easy way to make an entire fall day out of the experience.

Then, when the kids are old enough to start asking for something actually scary, graduate to the L.A. Haunted Hayride, Knott’s Scary Farm or Halloween Horror Nights.

No matter which you choose, fall is one of my favorite times to get out and explore Southern California as a family. We may not have changing leaves on every corner or reliably sweater-worthy October weather, but when it comes to pumpkin patches, Halloween events and over-the-top seasonal fun, Southern California definitely knows how to celebrate spooky season.
