If there’s one thing San Diego does exceptionally well, it’s beaches. From rugged cliffs and hidden coves to wide sandy stretches perfect for families, the best beaches of San Diego each have their own personality. And as a native San Diegan, I’ve spent years exploring these beaches in every season—from summer bonfires to winter tidepool walks and everything in between.

Whether you’re looking for the best surfing beach, the calmest water for kids, or the prettiest sunset spot, this guide covers the best beaches of San Diego and what each one is known for.

La Jolla Shores — Best Beach for Families and Kayaking

If you’re visiting San Diego with kids, La Jolla Shores is one of the best beaches you can choose. The waves are usually gentle, the beach is wide and sandy, and there’s plenty of room to spread out.

This beach is also one of the best launch spots for kayaking and snorkeling tours. The nearby La Jolla Ecological Reserve is full of marine life, and it’s not unusual to spot leopard sharks during the warmer months. Don’t worry—they’re harmless and actually a major attraction here. It’s the seagulls at La Jolla Shores you need to watch out for.

Parking is also easier here than at some of the other San Diego beaches, especially if you arrive early. There’s a large parking lot that usually has decent turnover as the early-morning surfers leave around midday.

La Jolla Cove — Best Beach for Snorkeling and Sea Life

When people picture the postcard version of San Diego, they’re often thinking of La Jolla Cove.

This small but stunning cove is famous for its crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs, and incredible snorkeling. Visibility here can be surprisingly good, especially in late summer and early fall. You’ll often see bright orange garibaldi fish, sea lions, and even harmless reef sharks.

The beach itself is tiny, so this isn’t the best option if you want a long sandy beach day. But for scenery and underwater exploration, it’s hard to beat. Parking can be tricky though, so bring your patience.

Best for: Snorkeling, scuba diving, wildlife viewing, photography

Coronado Beach — Best Beach for Soft Sand and Classic San Diego Views

Coronado Beach consistently ranks among the best beaches of San Diego for good reason. The sand here is famously soft, and the beach feels expansive even during busy summer weekends.

The iconic Hotel del Coronado gives the whole area a classic Southern California feel. This is the kind of beach where you can spend an entire day walking the shoreline, building sandcastles, and watching the sunset. We love looking for sand dollars here, and we almost always find some! Plus, in the winter time, you can enjoy all the holiday festivities at the Hotel Del Coronado.

The waves can be a little stronger here than La Jolla Shores, but it’s still a favorite for families.

Torrey Pines State Beach — Best San Diego Beach for Hiking and Scenic Views

If you love combining beach time with outdoor adventure, Torrey Pines State Beach is one of the most beautiful coastal spots in Southern California. The towering cliffs and hiking trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offer incredible ocean views, and the beach below feels far more rugged and natural than many of San Diego’s more developed beaches.

This is also one of my personal favorite places for sunset walks. The scenery is especially gorgeous in the evening when the cliffs glow golden in the light.

It does cost money to park in the parking lots. Rates range from $10- $25 per vehicle depending on the day and season. The perk is that this helps to keep this beach emptier, and finding a parking spot is easier than many of the other beaches.

Best for: Hiking, photography, scenic walks, nature lovers

Windansea Beach — Best Beach for Surfing and Local Vibes

Another of the La Jolla beaches, Windansea Beach has long been known as one of San Diego’s iconic surf beaches. The waves here are stronger and better suited for experienced surfers, but even non-surfers love the atmosphere.

The beach is smaller and rockier than others on this list, but it has a distinctly local feel. The famous surf shack and dramatic shoreline make it one of the most photographed beaches in San Diego.

This is not the best swimming beach for young kids, but it’s fantastic if you want that authentic Southern California surf culture vibe.

Best for: Surfing, sunsets, photography, local atmosphere

Cardiff State Beach — Best San Diego Beach for Beginner Surfers

Located in North County, Cardiff State Beach is a favorite among locals for surfing and relaxed beach days.

The surf here is often more approachable for beginners, and the laid-back beach town atmosphere makes it easy to spend the entire afternoon here. There are also great restaurants nearby, which is always a bonus after a beach day.

If you visit during low tide, you can sometimes explore smaller tidepool areas along the rocky sections nearby. And there’s camping nearby at the San Elijo State Beach, which puts you just steps away from the sand.

Best for: Beginner surfing, beach town vibes, casual beach days

Cabrillo National Monument Tide Pools — Best Beach for Tidepools

For something completely different from the typical sandy beach experience, head to Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma.

While this isn’t a beach for swimming or surfing, it’s a great spot for finding marine life. During low tide, the tidepool area becomes one of the most fascinating places to explore in San Diego. You can often spot sea stars, crabs, sea anemones, and other marine life tucked into the rocky pools.

This is one of the best educational beach experiences for kids and a great reminder that San Diego beaches are about much more than swimming.

Moonlight State Beach — Best Beach for Family Amenities

Moonlight State Beach is one of the most family-friendly beaches in North County San Diego.

There’s a playground, snack bar, volleyball courts, picnic areas, and seasonal fire pits. It’s one of those beaches where parents can actually relax because everything is convenient and easy.

The beach is also known for beautiful sunsets and a fun community atmosphere during summer evenings.

Best for: Families, amenities, bonfires, full beach-day outings

Mission Beach — Best Beach for Entertainment and Classic Boardwalk Fun

Ok, so Mission Beach isn’t one of my personal favorites. And I know a lot of locals feel the same way. There are prettier and cleaner beaches to choose from (just about any other beach on this list). But I’m including this beach on this list because of how much there is to do here—especially for families.

This beach is all about energy and entertainment. The boardwalk is packed with bike riders, skaters, restaurants, and beach shops. Plus, kids usually love visiting Belmont Park for the rides and arcade games. It’s one of the most classic Southern California beach experiences you can have. There’s also mini golf, laser tag, escape rooms, zip lines and the famous indoor pool, the Plunge.

Another major perk is the large parking lot, which honestly makes Mission Beach far easier than some of the other San Diego beaches where parking can feel nearly impossible during summer weekends. The main lot fills up early, but there is another lot right across the street.

While I personally wouldn’t rank it as one of the most beautiful beaches in San Diego, it’s definitely one of the most fun and convenient if you’re looking for a lively beach day with lots to keep everyone entertained.

Final Thoughts on the Best Beaches of San Diego

One of the best things about San Diego is that no two beaches feel exactly the same. Some are ideal for surfing, others are perfect for snorkeling, and some are simply made for relaxing with your toes in the sand.

As someone who grew up here, I can honestly say there’s still something special about spending a day at the beach in San Diego—whether it’s watching surfers at Windansea, exploring tidepools in Point Loma, or catching a sunset in Coronado.

The best beaches of San Diego really depend on what kind of beach day you’re looking for. But with so many incredible options along the coastline, it’s hard to go wrong.
