June Lake Oh Ridge Campground

We didn’t plan to camp at June Lake. We had booked Meeks Bay campsites 14 months earlier, but after covid, Meeks Bay cancelled all camp reservations until July 2020, and we were booked the last week of June. At this time, there wasn’t a lot guaranteed to be open, but we were itching to get some normalcy and outdoor adventures back in our life, so we booked sites at the June Lake Oh Ridge Campground. I am here to tell you—it did not disappoint!
June Lake is one of the most popular lakes in California to camp at, and for good reason. It’s a beautiful lake that allows both boating and swimming. Plus there are two campgrounds that provide lake access.

June Lake Oh Ridge Campground Layout
The campground is set up in various loops, named by animal. Some of the campsites have beautiful lake views in the bear and duck loops. We stayed in the deer loop, which did not have lake views, but was still fine. Not all of the loops have bathrooms, so we needed one that did since my sister and I were tent camping.
The campsites at Oh Ridge campground all come standard with a picnic table and a bear box to keep your food away from possible bears.

Amenities at June Lake
This campground only offers dry camping. You can camp in a tent or RV, but there are no hook-up sites. There are bathrooms, but just note that not all camp loops have bathrooms, so chose your spot accordingly.
There is a camp store at the campground next door, so you can walk or drive over there for anything you might have forgotten–or to get ice cream at night.
When we camped at the June Lake Oh Ridge Campground in June 2020, the beach was “closed” which oddly enough meant we could still go to the lake, but they closed the parking lot to keep non-campers out. The lake isn’t far, so that wasn’t a big deal, except it meant that we had to carry our rafts, kayaks and paddleboards up and down everyday.

The lake is beautiful and has the most scenic background with snow-capped peaks. This is a great lake for kids–the water stays shallow for awhile, making it good for younger kids to splash around or try out a kayak or paddle board.

The June Lake Oh Ridge Campground itself is nice and quiet. We saw multiple deer before we even made it from the entrance to our campsite. And the loops are great for kids on bikes or scooters since there isn’t through traffic constantly passing by.

Exploring the June Lake Area
There is a ton you can do in the June Lake area. June Lake is a cute little town with shops and restaurants. There’s good hiking in the area, both for kids and advanced hikers, and the scenic, 16-mile June Lake Loop will provide you with gorgeous views without ever getting out of your car. During the winter months (when the campground is closed), you can ski at June Mountain.
When the Tioga Pass is open, you can make a day trip to Yosemite from June Lake as well. It’ll take you 2-3 hours to drive there depending on where in Yosemite you’d like to go.

Overall, I think Oh Ridge has a lot to offer for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to camp with their kids. We’ll be camping in Mammoth this summer, so I’ll be sure to let you know how it compares to Oh Ridge.
Reservations at June Lake Oh Ridge Campground
The Oh Ridge campground is open from late April to mid October each year. To make a reservation, log into recreation.gov and search Oh Ridge or click here. You can book campsites up to 6 months in advance, on a rolling basis.

We will be returning to this campground again next summer on our way to Lake Tahoe. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to see all of our adventures as they happen.
