San Francisco is easily one of the best cities to visit in California, and it’s worth the trip. But if you only have 24 hours in San Francisco, you might be wondering—how do I fit in all the must-see spots without feeling rushed? The good news: San Francisco is compact and easy to explore, especially if you plan your route ahead of time. While one day may never seem like enough, this San Francisco one day itinerary hits the highlights, mixes in some family-friendly fun, and still leaves time to just enjoy the city’s vibe.

Morning: Golden Gate Bridge & Crissy Field

Start your day with the city’s most iconic landmark—the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking or biking even part of the bridge gives you jaw-dropping views of the bay and Alcatraz. If you’re with kids (or just not up for the full walk), head down to Crissy Field instead. It’s a flat, stroller-friendly path along the water with plenty of space for kids to run around—and the bridge is your backdrop. It makes for the best photo opps!

☕ Pro tip: Grab coffee and pastries at Warming Hut Café by the water before you start your walk.

San Francisco One Day Itinerary — Mid-Morning: Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39

Next, head to Fisherman’s Wharf, one of the most touristy but must-do spots in San Francisco. Kids love watching the sea lions laze around on the docks at Pier 39, and adults will appreciate the street performers and waterfront views.

If you’re into history, stop by the Musée Mécanique, a quirky (and free!) museum full of antique arcade games you can actually play.

🍩 Snack stop: Try a hot, sugary mini-donut from Trish’s Donuts at Pier 39—it’s worth it.

Lunch: Chowder in a Sourdough Bowl

For lunch, you can’t go wrong with San Francisco’s most famous dish: clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Boudin Bakery is the classic choice, and the kids will love watching the bakers shape bread into turtles, crabs, and bears through the big glass windows.

San Francisco One Day Itinerary — Afternoon: Alcatraz or Exploratorium

  • Alcatraz Island: Even if you only have one day in San Francisco, Alcatraz should be on your itinerary. Taking the ferry out to Alcatraz is a bucket-list experience. The audio tour through the former prison is fascinating for adults and older kids (probably best for ages 10+). Make sure to book tickets ahead of time since they often sell out.
  • Exploratorium: If you’re traveling with younger kids or want something more interactive, swap Alcatraz for the Exploratorium. This hands-on science museum is one of the best things to do in San Francisco with kids. It’s full of experiments and exhibits that are as fun for adults as they are for kids.

Late Afternoon: Chinatown & North Beach

After your big activity, head toward Chinatown, one of the oldest and largest in the U.S. Stroll through the colorful streets, pop into shops for souvenirs, and maybe grab an egg tart or dim sum snack.

From there, wander over to North Beach, San Francisco’s “Little Italy.” If you’re ready for a pick-me-up, Caffe Trieste is a historic spot for espresso (and a quick rest).

Evening: Cable Car & Ghirardelli Square

Cap off your one day in San Francisco off with a ride on a cable car—a must-do on your itinerary. The Powell-Hyde line has some of the best views. Kids love hanging onto the poles while the car rattles up and down the hills, and it’s one of those “only in San Francisco” experiences.

End at Ghirardelli Square, where you can treat yourself to an over-the-top sundae or hot fudge brownie. The square also has shops and a grassy area to relax before calling it a day.

Tips for Families Doing San Francisco in One Day

  • Get around smartly: Parking can be a nightmare—stick to public transit, walking, or ride shares.
  • Pack layers: The weather changes fast, especially near the water. Even in summer, bring a jacket.
  • Mix sightseeing with downtime: Crissy Field, playgrounds in Golden Gate Park, or just hanging at the piers give kids time to recharge.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
