Potrero County Park Campground, San Diego

Potrero County Park is a family-friendly campground located 45 miles east of San Diego. Its rural location makes you feel far removed from city limits. Yet, it’s an easy enough drive for a quick weekend or overnight getaway.

We camped at Potrero County Park for the first time in June 2022. My son’s baseball coach camped there somewhat regularly, so he invited all of the t-ball families for an end-of-season group camping trip.
This campground was a great choice for a group because it was easy to book sites that were all next to each other. In addition, this campground has a baseball field on site, so we knew it would be fun for the kids to run around and hit some balls while we were there.
About the Potrero County Park Campground

The Potrero County Regional Park campground has 37 campgrounds and two cabins. Plus various picnic areas that can be rented out. There are both tent and hook-up sites available, as well as hot showers that are available to anyone staying overnight at a campsite or in a cabin.
The campground is full of coastal live oaks, which provide a lot of shade for campers. Inside the campground, you’ll find lots of things to do. There are hiking trails, a playground, a baseball field, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court and an enclosed pavilion.

The nearby town of Potrero has a general store, cafe, library and post office. And it’s just minutes away from the Mexico border.

Things to Note
When we visited in June of 2022, the town of Potrero, including the campground, was under a boil water advisory. Somehow, not one person in our group was notified ahead of time.
The rangers were very accommodating and gave us extra bottled water to have for the weekend. But it was the hottest weekend in June, with temps in the upper 90s. So, all of our plans to keep cool while tent camping, like water balloon and water-gun fights, had to be a modified.

That being said, even with the high temperatures, the campground was very pleasant with all of its shade. There was a very nice breeze as well. It was too hot to be at the baseball field during the day, but as the sun was setting, we headed over there for a fun home-run derby.

If you’re looking for a fun place to camp with a large group, the Potrero County Park is a great option. Just be sure to check the weather and maybe call in regards to boil water advisories before you head out to this campground. I know that the boil water advisory was still in effect several months later.
This is also a great place for beginner campers. It’s easy enough to get campsites, you have amenities like bathrooms and hookups, and it’s not too far if you realize you don’t have all the camping essentials you need.
Because it does get hot in Potrero, this is also a great campground to keep in mind for a fall camping destination.
