Camping in Mammoth – One of the best things to do in Mammoth Lakes California during the summer season

Camping in Mammoth Lakes, California is very popular. There are several great campgrounds in the area to choose from–many right on the lakes. But they do book up well in advance. And note that swimming isn’t allowed in most of the lakes.

Make sure to book sites early if you’re planning a summer camping trip at one of these California camping lakes.

Biking & Hiking

Mammoth’s summer playground is made for two wheels and two feet. There are so many beautiful places to explore in the Mammoth Lakes area. Some of the most popular things to do in Mammoth Lakes, California are:

  • Mountain Biking – The famed Mammoth Bike Park is a must-do for riders of all levels with over 80 miles of trails.
  • Scenic Trails & Lakes Basin – Link up multiple alpine lakes on foot or bike using the Lakes Basin Path or head to hidden gems like McLeod Lake and Lake Mamie for tranquil scenery.
  • Rainbow Falls & Devil’s Postpile National Monument – A classic summer hike leading to picturesque basalt formations and the misty curtain of Rainbow Falls.

Last summer, I hiked the Big Pines Lake hike which is a couple hours south of Mammoth. But when we were hiking, we met a man who told us all of his favorite trails in the Mammoth area and since then I have been dying to complete them all.

Water Fun & Views

  • Kayak or SUP on Water – Glide across serene waters at Lake Mary or Twin Lakes. Rentals are available in the Lakes Basin.
  • Pontoon & Boats at Convict Lake – Pack a picnic and enjoy a lazy afternoon on Convict Lake’s scenic surface.

Swimming Spots in Mammoth Lakes, California

The biggest negative in my opinion about the Mammoth Lakes, California, in the summer time is that you can’t swim in most of them. When camping with kids, this is torture for them. But as mentioned above, you can kayak and paddleboard on them. And while many of the high alpine lakes in Mammoth don’t allow swimming, there are some excellent options for those itching to get in the water:

  • Horseshoe Lake – A lovely local spot where swimming and wading are popular on warm summer days. It’s one of the more family-friendly places to take a dip, and the surrounding area is perfect for picnicking and short walks.
  • Whitmore Pool (public pool) – Great when you want a guaranteed warm swim without worrying about alpine water temps, with lifeguards and amenities.

If your heart is set on a classic beach vibe, the nearby June Lake Loop (about 20 minutes north) has several lakes with sandy shorelines and warmer water ideal for swimming and lake play.

Stroll Through Mammoth Mountain Village

No trip to Mammoth Lakes, California, is complete without spending a little time in Mammoth Mountain Village. This lively pedestrian-friendly hub sits at the base of Mammoth Mountain and is the perfect place to slow down between adventures. You’ll find a mix of local shops, casual eateries, coffee spots, and après-ski favorites—all with mountain views as the backdrop.

In the winter, the village buzzes with skiers and snowboarders grabbing a warm drink or celebrating a great day on the slopes. In the summer, it’s a great place to enjoy outdoor dining, live music events, and family-friendly festivals. There’s often something happening, whether it’s movie nights, seasonal celebrations, or just a relaxed mountain-town vibe that invites you to linger a little longer.

It’s also incredibly convenient—many lodges and gondola access points are right nearby, including the popular Village Lodge, which puts you right in the heart of the action.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
