In a time when simply paying a mortgage and stocking the fridge with groceries can feel like a hardship, there are plenty of families who never feel like they can travel. Heck, when I was growing up, the only vacation we took was our annual beach camping trip. That’s why I want to highlight some places that would work well for affordable family vacations.

But I’ve learned some tricks along the way that allow me to stretch my travel budget further. For the sake of this post, I’ll mostly focus on “true family vacations”, meaning not camping trips. But truthfully, camping is one of my favorite vacation ideas for families on a budget. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park itself is free to enter, which immediately makes this destination more budget-friendly than many other family vacation spots. Families can spend their days hiking, spotting wildlife, splashing in streams, or enjoying scenic drives without paying expensive admission fees.

Nearby Pigeon Forge is packed with affordable entertainment options like mini golf, mountain coasters, go-karts, and dinner shows. Renting a cabin with a kitchen can also help save money on dining out.

Many hotels have pools, lazy rivers, and beach access included in the nightly rate, which can stretch your vacation budget further. Families can enjoy the boardwalk, arcades, mini golf, beach days, and live entertainment without needing expensive theme park tickets.

Traveling during shoulder season — late spring or early fall — can make this destination even more affordable.

If you’re open to international travel, Puerto Vallarta is one of the best affordable family vacations in Mexico.

Flights can often be reasonably priced, especially from the western United States, and families can find all-inclusive resorts that cost far less than Caribbean destinations. In fact, you’ll find some of the most affordable all-inclusive resorts there. Plus, food and activities are generally more affordable once you arrive. Many times, we don’t even do extra activities since the beach is swimmable. A good pool and beautiful beach is plenty of fun for the kids.

I have yet to find cheap travel over Thanksgiving week, for instance, no matter where we choose to go. The flights are always crazy expensive.
