If you’re planning a trip to Salem, MA in October, you’re most definitely not alone. October is the absolute peak season in Salem, when the entire town leans into its spooky reputation with festivals, ghost tours, haunted attractions, and pop-up events around every corner.

It’s also when Salem sees hundreds of thousands of visitors, especially on weekends and holiday weekends. That means some of the best things to do in Salem sell out quickly—sometimes weeks or even months in advance. It also means that hotels and house rentals in Salem book up far in advance as well, and they cost a small fortune. We booked our house rental in March, and it was one of only a few options left. All of the hotels in Salem were booked up except the Hampton Inn, which was $1600 for two weekday nights. So be sure to plan accordingly.

Luckily, when it comes to the housing options, you can book early. But many of the attractions you’ll want to do in Salem only let you book a short time in advance. So if you’re a planner like I am, I know how stressful this can be. But this list can help ensure you don’t miss out–or at least that you don’t miss out on your opportunity to try. If you’re trying to prioritize what to book before your trip, here are five Salem experiences that tend to sell out the fastest in October.

Visit the Salem Witch Museum

If it’s your first visit to Salem Ma in October, this is usually the attraction people want to see most.

The museum tells the story of the infamous 1692 witch trials through a dramatic presentation featuring life-size stage sets and narration that walks visitors through the events that led to the hysteria.

In October, visits are timed, and you can only book your tickets the night before you want to go. So, while most of the time, I preach booking early–with this one, you unfortunately can’t. Tickets go on sale at 10pm the night before you wish to visit and are only available for purchase through the official website. Tickets are not available in advance or for purchase at the door.

Take a Nighttime Ghost Tour – A Must Do When Visiting Salem, Ma in October

One of the most fun ways to experience Salem MA October is on a ghost or witch walking tour after dark.

This is one of the events you actually can book out early. Several companies run excellent tours through the historic streets, sharing eerie stories about Salem’s past and the city’s most haunted locations. The vibe is perfect for October—lantern-lit streets, costumed guides, and plenty of spooky history.

Evening tours between 7–9 pm tend to sell out the fastest.

Tip: Some of the tour options are fully refundable up until 24 hours prior. It’s smart to book early, and if plans change, you won’t be out any money. Just be sure to check the cancellation policies before booking.

Tour the The House of the Seven Gables

This historic seaside mansion is one of Salem’s most beautiful and atmospheric attractions.

Built in the 1600s and later made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, the property includes:

• A guided mansion tour
• Gorgeous harbor views
• Colonial gardens
• A hidden staircase inside the house

Because tours are guided with limited group sizes, spots can fill quickly in October. Tickets will go on sale in advance, but are released in phases for October. The website suggests checking for release of tickets in September.

Tip:
Morning tours are usually easier to get and a great way to start your day before crowds build in town.

See a Live Witch Trial at the Witch Dungeon Museum

This attraction offers something a little different: a live reenactment of an actual 1692 witch trial.

Actors portray historical figures from Salem’s past before guiding visitors through a recreated dungeon that shows what imprisonment looked like during the trials.

There are continuous shows all day throughout the day as well as extended hours in October. But the smaller theater means seats can fill up quickly—especially on weekends in Salem MA October. You can only purchase tickets at the door, so arrive early and be prepared to wait a bit.

Experience the Haunted Attractions at the Salem Wax Museum

If you’re looking for classic Halloween fun while visiting Salem MA October, this attraction might be worth checking out. The reviews on the wax museum portion tend to feel that the displays are outdated. But during the Halloween season, there are five premier attractions:

One of the best parts of visiting Salem MA October is simply soaking up the atmosphere during the citywide festival, Salem Haunted Happenings.

Throughout October you’ll find:

• Costume parades
• Seasonal food and drinks

The festival is free to attend and creates an incredibly festive vibe throughout downtown Salem. And there are no tickets you need to purchase ahead of time for this one. Phew!

If you’re planning a trip during October, it’s worth booking at least two or three experiences in advance. A ghost tour, the Salem Witch Museum, and one historic house tour are usually the best places to start.

After that, you can leave some time in your schedule to wander the streets, explore shops, and enjoy the Halloween atmosphere that makes Salem such a unique fall destination.
