Best Family Travel Ideas for 2027

Five kids smiling in front of a cruise ship, which is on my list of fun family travel ideas.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent way too many late nights scrolling through destination photos trying to figure out where to take your crew next. Whether you’re planning a family road trip across national parks, a laid-back beach week with the grandparents, or a big theme parks adventure your kids will talk about for years, there’s no shortage of options. The hard part is narrowing down the list of family travel ideas.

That’s why I put together this list of travel ideas that actually work for real families-road trips, city breaks, national park adventures, beach weeks, cruises, camping getaways, and even a first international trip. These are the kinds of family vacations that my readers ask me about most, and many are trips we’ve done ourselves.

Here are a few quick ideas to get your wheels turning: a San Diego long weekend with the zoo and LEGOLAND, a Smoky Mountains cabin escape in October, a Washington DC museum marathon over spring break, or a Cancún all-inclusive in February when everyone’s over winter. Every idea below explains who it works best for–whether you’ve got young kids, teens, grandparents in tow, or a tight budget–so you can match fast and start planning your next trip.

How I Chose These Family Travel Ideas

Not every pretty destination works with kids in tow. We’ve all seen those gorgeous travel photos that leave out the meltdowns, the long security lines with car seats, and the three-hour drive to a “nearby” attraction. The criteria below are rooted in real-world family travel, not Instagram fantasy. Although I’m sure you can still get some Instagram-worthy pictures. I considered trips across North America and a few easy international options that are doable with kids during 2026–2027 school breaks.

Key Criteria for Great Family Trips

  • Accessibility and travel time: Nonstop or one-stop flights from major US hubs, or reasonable drive times under six hours for road trips.
  • Kid-friendly activities: A strong mix of things kids actually enjoy-playgrounds, aquariums, easy hikes, theme parks, pools-within 30–60 minutes of your base. The best family travel destinations aim to entertain both kids and adults.
  • Value for money: Range of lodging options from campgrounds to family friendly hotels to vacation rentals. Plenty of free or low-cost activities at each destination.
  • Seasonality: Each idea has a clear best window. We note when to go and why.
  • Age appropriateness: Specific callouts for babies and toddlers vs. elementary-age vs. teens and older kids.
  • Practicality: Family rooms or suites, stroller-friendliness, medical facilities, and basic safety. Traveling with kids often requires extra gear like strollers, so we prioritized destinations that accommodate that reality. Balancing high-energy activities with downtime can prevent burnout during family trips, and involving all family members in trip planning enhances the experience for everyone.

15 Best Family Travel Ideas for 2026–2027

I’ve narrowed this down to 15 distinct types of trips–from theme park blowouts to quiet cabin escapes. These aren’t ranked by “best overall” but start with the broadest crowd-pleasers and the ideas most requested by Family Adventures Blog readers.

1. Classic Theme Park Week in Orlando, Florida

Well duh. You know Disney World has to make the list of top family travel ideas. Orlando is known for its iconic theme parks and family-friendly attractions, and a 5–7 day trip here remains the ultimate bucket list destination for families planning a big family trip in 2026 or 2027.

Why It Stands Out

Walt Disney World has four parks–Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. If you want to hit all four, you’ll want at least four days to explore. Add Universal Orlando with Islands of Adventure and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and you’ve got enough to fill a full week. LEGOLAND Florida is also nearby for younger visitors. Seasonal events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party make fall visits super fun. And kids ages 2 and under are free at Disney World, which helps the budget for families with little kids.

Best For

Families with kids 3–14 who love characters, coasters, and immersive worlds. Also great for grandparent trips and milestone birthdays where you’re okay with a higher budget.

Key Strengths

  • Massive variety of rides, shows, and dining for every age and thrill level
  • On-site resorts with pools and transportation cut down on logistics. Check out these family friendly hotels in Orlando and Orlando resorts with lazy river.
  • Easy to pair with a rest day at a resort pool, Cape Canaveral, or a nearby state park beach
  • The Kennedy Space Center offers interactive experiences for kids obsessed with space exploration, and Cape Canaveral offers opportunities to witness rocket launches and family-friendly activities and beaches

Possible Limitations

  • High cost once you add park tickets, food, and Genie+/Express Passes
  • Can be overstimulating for sensory-sensitive kids without careful pacing
  • Not a relaxing trip. You’ll get more steps in one day than you probably usually get in a week!
  • Crowds, especially during summer and school breaks.

2. National Parks Road Trip: Yellowstone & Grand Teton

If your family loves wildlife, wide-open spaces, and incredible scenery, a Grand Teton and Yellowstone road trip should be high on your 2027 bucket list! This 7–10 day adventure is one of the best family travel ideas for nature lovers, with opportunities to spot bison, watch Old Faithful erupt, explore colorful geothermal features, and take in some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in the country. Fly into Jackson Hole or Bozeman, rent a car, and spend your days exploring two of America’s most iconic national parks, with plenty of scenic stops and unexpected discoveries along the way. It’s the kind of family road trip that creates lasting memories and gives everyone a chance to unplug and enjoy the adventure.

A family of five posing in front of a waterfall in Yellowstone, which is on my list of the best family travel ideas for next year.

Why It Stands Out as a Top Family Travel Idea

Yellowstone National Park features active geothermal features and diverse wildlife–bison, elk, maybe bears and wolves. The boardwalks around geysers and hot springs are manageable even for a young child, and the scenery is unlike anything at home. National parks offer incredible opportunities for wildlife spotting and outdoor adventure, and wildlife adventures can enhance children’s learning and engagement during trips.

Best For

Families with school-age kids and teens who enjoy hiking and nature. Best for summer vacations (late June–early September) when roads and lodges are fully open. Check out our Grand Teton and Yellowstone itinerary for a detailed breakdown. And remember, if you have a 4th grader, you can get in for free!

Key Strengths

  • Incredible scenery: geysers, hot springs, mountains, lakes
  • Junior Ranger programs and ranger-led talks for educational value
  • Cabins, park lodges, and nearby towns (West Yellowstone, Jackson) offer flexible price points
  • Option to camp in some amazing Yellowstone campgrounds, which can help cut down on costs and add in extra adventure

Possible Limitations

  • Requires advance booking 9–12 months out for in-park lodging in peak season
  • Long driving distances between highlights; not ideal if your kids hate car time

3. City + Beach Combo: San Diego & La Jolla, California

I can’t talk about a classic California family vacation without mentioning San Diego! With beautiful beaches, world-famous attractions, and plenty of outdoor adventures, San Diego is a fantastic choice for families planning a 4–6 day getaway in 2027. Spend a day exploring the famous San Diego Zoo and the gardens and museums of Balboa Park, climb aboard the historic USS Midway, then trade sightseeing for sandy beaches, ocean views, and tide pool adventures in La Jolla. The best part? You can mix big-ticket attractions with laid-back beach days, so there’s something for everyone without feeling like you have to pack every minute of your vacation.

Kids running on a beach with a city landscape behind them in one of the best cities for a family vacation

Why It Stands Out

Mild weather almost year round and family friendly activities everywhere you look. In fact, San Diego is even a great place to visit in the winter. The San Diego Zoo is a must-visit family-friendly destination, and an easy day trip to LEGOLAND California–designed for kids ages 2–12–rounds out the experience.

Best For

Families with babies through teens. Especially good as a first trip by air with young kids from elsewhere in the US. Try spring break (March–April) or fall break to dodge summer crowds. Chek out my guide to the best things to do in San Diego to help you plan your trip.

Key Strengths

  • Mix of animal encounters, amazing museums, playgrounds, and beach time
  • Plenty of chain hotels and vacation rentals with kitchenettes and laundry
  • Mini golf, boardwalks, and harbor cruises keep every age group happy

Possible Limitations

  • A car is almost essential; parking costs can add up in popular areas
  • Pacific water temperatures can be cooler than families expect
  • Peak season can be on the pricier side

4. East Coast History & Museums: Washington, DC Weekend

If there’s one city that makes learning history surprisingly fun for kids, it’s Washington, DC! A 3–4 day getaway gives your family plenty of time to explore the National Mall, visit some of the incredible Smithsonian museums, and see famous monuments up close. And here’s the best part: most of the city’s major museums and monuments are completely free to visit, making DC one of the best family vacation destinations for families who want a memorable trip without spending a fortune. It’s a great mix of education, sightseeing, and budget-friendly fun!

Image from kayak.com

Why It Stands Out as a Top Family Travel Idea

You could spend an entire day in just the National Air and Space Museum or the Natural History Museum. Both are loaded with interactive experiences. The whole family can layer in fun stops like the National Zoo, paddle boats on the Tidal Basin, and a walk past the Lincoln Memorial.

Best For

School-age kids through teens learning US history and civics. Families within driving distance on the East Coast for long weekends or a 4th of July visit.

Key Strengths

  • Walkable core with stroller-friendly paths along the Mall
  • No car seats needed once you arrive-good public transit covers the downtown area
  • Amazing museums that are completely free

Possible Limitations

  • Summer humidity and crowds around holidays can be intense
  • Lots of walking between attractions, and the Mall is much larger than it looks on a map, which can be exhausting for younger kids.
  • Hotel prices in the downtown area can be expensive, especially during peak spring and summer travel seasons.
  • Not as much variety in traditional family entertainment compared to destinations like Orlando, especially for kids who aren’t particularly interested in history or museums.

5. Laid-Back Beach Week: Gulf Coast Florida (Destin & 30A)

A simple 5–7 night beach rental trip focused on white-sand beaches, calm water, and low-key attractions. If big cities and museums sound exhausting to you, a laid-back beach getaway might be better suited for you. This is the definition of a relaxing family vacation.

Image from vrbo.com

Why It Stands Out

Sugar-sand beaches, shallow turquoise water, and family-oriented communities along Scenic Highway 30A. Nearby, Hilton Head in South Carolina is known for its outdoor activities and relaxation if you want to explore the broader coast. For adventurous families, Dry Tortugas National Park-accessible only by ferry or helicopter-is a unique side trip from the Florida Keys, and it’s cheaper for kids under 4.

Best For

Families with toddlers and preschoolers who just need sand, water, and naps. Multigenerational trips where the extended family shares a larger vacation home.

Key Strengths

  • Most activities are free: beach time, shell hunting, sunsets
  • Kitchen and laundry in rentals simplify life with little kids
  • Casual restaurants and ice cream walks in the evenings

Possible Limitations

  • Peak summer and spring break bring high prices and heavy traffic
  • Hurricane season (June–November) adds weather risk; grab travel insurance

6. All-Inclusive Family Travel Ideas: Family Resort in Cancún or Riviera Maya, Mexico

If you’re looking for family travel ideas where you know the exact costs up front, and you can simply relax with a drink in your hand, an all-inclusive getaway might speak to you. A 4–7 night stay at a kid friendly all-inclusive with kids’ club, splash pads, and family suites. No cooking, no driving-just pool, beach, repeat. Your crew may even enjoy one of these Cancun all-inclusive resorts with a water park.

Six kids posed in front of a colorful sign that says "Cancun", which is one of my family travel ideas for next year

Why It Stands Out

Everything is on property: pools, beach, kids’ activities, food. This is the dream destination for overwhelmed parents who want zero logistics. I love being able to take a vacation knowing that I can yes to all the extra. Ice cream every night? Sure. A soda with lunch and dinner? Have at it!

Best For

Parents craving a “no-planning” winter sun escape (January–March 2027). Families with babies and toddlers who benefit from cribs, high chairs, and baby gear provided by the resort. Families with teens may prefer one of these resorts that caters to older kids as well.

Key Strengths

  • Predictable budget: food, drinks, and many activities included (check out this list of the best budget-friendly all-inclusive resorts)
  • Kids’ clubs and evening entertainment give parents pockets of downtime
  • Direct flights from many US cities to Cancún International Airport

Possible Limitations

  • Can feel bubble-like without day trips to Tulum or cenotes for local culture
  • Resort add-ons (photo packages, premium dining) may inflate total spend compared to other resorts
  • All-inclusive resorts area limited for larger families (although here are some that are great for families of 5+)

7. Mountain Cabin Escape: Great Smoky Mountains & Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Image from expedia.com

If your family loves the idea of a mountain getaway, Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains should definitely be on your 2027 vacation list! Picture a 4–6 night stay in a cozy cabin tucked into the mountains, mornings spent exploring scenic trails and waterfalls, and afternoons enjoying all the family-friendly attractions in Gatlinburg. Even better, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the few national parks with no entrance fee, making this a surprisingly budget-friendly family vacation. Between the outdoor adventures, mountain views, and fun attractions, it’s the kind of trip that offers a little something for everyone.

Check out my complete guide to the 10 best mountain towns in the U.S. for a family getaway.

Why It Stands Out

Free entry to the most visited national park in the country, dozens of short family-friendly trails, and nearby Chattanooga features a top-notch aquarium and a vibrant downtown area if you want a day trip side adventure. New River Gorge, one of the newest national parks in the United States, is also within a long day’s drive for families wanting to explore off the beaten path.

Best For

Budget-minded families in the Southeast or Midwest who can drive. Fall break trips in October when foliage is stunning.

Key Strengths

  • Cabins with hot tubs and game rooms make rainy days fun
  • Mix of nature (Cades Cove, waterfalls) and kitschy fun (Ripley’s Aquarium, mountain coasters)
  • Easy entry-level national park for families new to hiking

Possible Limitations

  • Traffic and crowds in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge during peak seasons
  • Mountain roads can be winding; not ideal for motion-sick passengers

8. “First Big Europe Trip” with Kids: London & Paris Combo

Image from hotels.com

Talk about a bucket list family vacation! A 7–10 day trip splitting time between London and Paris gives your family the chance to experience two of Europe’s most iconic cities in one unforgettable adventure. Think famous landmarks, royal history, charming neighborhoods, incredible food, and plenty of sightseeing, with a ride on the Eurostar train connecting the two cities. It’s a fantastic introduction to international travel for families, especially if you’re looking to give your kids a taste of Europe without having to plan an overly complicated itinerary.

Why It Stands Out

Both cities are extremely familiar to English-speaking families, with strong infrastructure and kid-friendly icons everywhere. Think London Eye, Tower of London, sprawling parks and playgrounds, the Eiffel Tower, and boat rides on the Seine. If you visit in late November or December, European Christmas markets in both cities add extra magic. The Christmas markets alone make a winter trip worthwhile.

Best For

Families with school-age and older children ready for a family adventure abroad. Summer 2027 or late spring/early fall to avoid winter gray.

Key Strengths

  • Efficient public transit; no rental car necessary
  • Apartment-style hotels with kitchenettes for easy breakfasts
  • Incredible things to see and learn at every turn

Possible Limitations

  • Higher overall cost than most domestic trips
  • Jet lag adjustment needed, especially for younger children

9. Family Travel Ideas: Camping or Glamping Weekend Close to Home

A group of kids sitting around a campfire because camping is on my list of top family travel ideas for 2027

If you know me, you know I love camping. And even with the awesome trips we’ve taken over the years, my kids still love a good ‘ole-fashioned camping trip. You can do traditional tent camping or “intro” glamping (yurts, safari tents, cabins) within a 2–4 hour drive of major US cities. You can coordinate a camping trip with a national park or pick one that is more of a destination all by itself. For instance, these campgrounds with water parks are fun for the whole family. Or, Wisconsin Dells, which has the most waterparks per capita in the world, is a fantastic base for families who want camping plus waterpark fun. Eco-lodges offer nature immersion and comfortable amenities for families who want something between tent and hotel.

Why It Stands Out

Screen-free time, campfires, stargazing, and unstructured outdoor play. Check out our guide to the best glamping sites for families for more inspiration.

Best For

Families wanting an affordable 2–3 night getaway on short notice. Kids 4+ who enjoy simple hikes, biking loops, and campground playgrounds.

Key Strengths

  • Low nightly costs compared to a hotel room, especially with your own gear
  • Easy to invite cousins or friends and book adjacent sites
  • Glamping resorts add comfort: real beds, bathrooms, and guided activities

Possible Limitations

  • Weather dependent; rain or heat waves can dampen the fun
  • Requires more gear and prep from parents

10. Big City Immersion: New York City with Kids

Image from viator.com

A trip to New York City provides so much opportunity for family fun. A 3–5 day NYC visit can include Central Park, kid-friendly museums, a Broadway show, and a ferry ride to see the Statue of Liberty. You’ll find nonstop energy and iconic sites that older kids recognize from books and movies. Check out this 3-day New York City itinerary to make the most of your visit.

Why It Stands Out

World-class museums like the American Museum of Natural History and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan keep kids engaged for hours.

Best For

Families with kids 6+ who can handle walking distance and crowds. A December 2026 NYC Christmas lights trip or spring 2027 break for milder weather.

Key Strengths

  • Plenty of free or low-cost attractions: parks, the public library lions, a Brooklyn Bridge walk
  • Flexible: splurge on shows or keep it budget-friendly with pizza and playgrounds

Possible Limitations

  • Hotel rooms are small; suites and rentals can be expensive
  • Busy streets and subways may overwhelm some younger children
  • Might not be the most relaxing getaway, if that’s what you’re looking for

11. Multi-Stop New England Summer Road Trip

A smiling woman in Boston with a large church behind her. Boston is on my list of the best family travel ideas for next year.

If you’ve never explored New England in the summer, this is your sign to plan a road trip! A 7–10 day loop gives you plenty of time to experience a little bit of everything, starting in Boston before heading up the Maine coast (think Portland, York, and Ogunquit) and then making your way to a lake or mountain getaway in New Hampshire or Vermont. One of my favorite things about road trips is getting to explore those smaller towns and hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Plus, they can be a surprisingly affordable way to take a family vacation, especially when you mix in a few free outdoor activities along the way.

Why It Stands Out as One of the Best Family Travel Ideas

Think charming coastal towns, historic lighthouses, fresh lobster rolls, and plenty of ice cream stops along the way. The best part is how much variety you can squeeze into one trip without spending hours and hours in the car. You can spend a day exploring Boston’s Freedom Trail, relax on a beautiful Maine beach, and then finish your trip surrounded by mountains or lakes in Vermont or New Hampshire. It’s such a fun combination of history, outdoor adventure, and classic New England charm!

Best For

Families traveling in July–August 2026 who love cooler summer temps versus Florida heat. Works well as a driving family trip from much of the Northeast.

Key Strengths

  • History, beaches, and small-town feel in one loop
  • Plenty of motels and inns that accept larger families
  • Easy to adjust pace day-by-day

Possible Limitations

  • Peak-season lodging must be booked early and can be pricey
  • Weather can be variable; fog and rain are common on the coast

12. Eco-Adventure in Costa Rica (Playas del Coco or Manuel Antonio)

A family of five smiling with a waterfall and rainforest behind them. They are in Costa Rica, which is on my list of best family travel ideas.

If your family loves being outdoors and is always up for a little adventure, Costa Rica is an easy addition to your travel bucket list. Plan for 5–8 nights and you’ll have plenty of time to experience everything from zip-lining through the rainforest and hiking to waterfalls to spotting incredible wildlife and relaxing on beautiful beaches. Costa Rica is one of those destinations that really has something for everyone, but I especially love it for families with older kids and teens who are ready for a little more adventure than your typical beach vacation.

Check out the itinerary I created for our trip to Costa Rica. It was absolutely amazing, and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Why It Stands Out

One of the best things about Costa Rica is how easy it is to combine adventure with downtime. You can spend the morning looking for monkeys, sloths, colorful birds, and butterflies in their natural habitat, then spend the afternoon swimming or relaxing at the beach. There are tons of family-friendly hotels, smaller nature lodges, and local guides who know how to make these experiences fun for kids. And unlike planning an expensive African safari, you don’t need a huge budget to have some pretty incredible wildlife encounters here!

Best For

Families ready for a “soft adventure” international trip with school-age kids. Late dry season (January–April) for reliable weather.

Key Strengths

  • Wildlife encounters that feel like a nature documentary come to life
  • Short internal drives compared to some other countries
  • Good healthcare and strong tourism infrastructure
  • Beautiful beaches

Possible Limitations

  • International travel requires a bit more prep and planning
  • Higher costs than many expect for tours and park entries

13. Cruise Sampler: 4–7 Night Caribbean Cruise

Pluto, a woman, and two kids posing in the sand with a cruise ship behind them. A family cruise is on my list of best travel ideas.

If you’re looking for a family vacation where there’s never a shortage of things to do, a Caribbean cruise is hard to beat! Set sail from Florida (Miami or Port Canaveral) on a 5–7 night adventure, visiting a handful of tropical ports and often a private island along the way. Think turquoise water, beautiful beaches, snorkeling, waterslides, incredible onboard entertainment, and plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. One of the biggest perks? You only have to unpack once while waking up somewhere new every morning. It’s an easy, fun way to experience several Caribbean destinations in one trip without the hassle of coordinating multiple hotels and transportation.

Why It Stands Out as One of the Best Family Travel Ideas

Dedicated kids’ and teen clubs, waterslides, mini golf, shows, and structured sea days versus port days. Meals and most entertainment are included. Check out these cruises that are excellent options for families.

Best For

Families with kids of multiple ages, including teens who enjoy independence onboard. Winter and spring 2027, especially February and March school breaks.

Key Strengths

  • Predictable structure that works for the whole family
  • Easy to add a pre- or post-cruise hotel night near the departure port
  • Horseback riding, snorkeling, and beach excursions at port stops

Possible Limitations

14. Teen-Focused Adventure: Utah’s “Mighty 5” National Parks Sampler

A boy wearing an SD hat carrying his mom on his back, smiling, and running through Zion National Park

If your family is up for an adventure, a Utah national parks road trip needs to be on your 2027 bucket list! Spend 7–10 days exploring some of the most incredible landscapes in the country, from the towering red cliffs of Zion to the otherworldly hoodoos of Bryce Canyon and the iconic arches around Moab. Mix in scenic drives, unforgettable hikes, natural water features, and plenty of opportunities to get outside and explore. With fun towns like Springdale and Moab serving as your home base, there’s no shortage of great places to eat and things to do between park visits. This is one of those trips that older kids and teens will remember long after the vacation is over!

Why It Stands Out as a Top Family Travel Ideas

Instagram-worthy landscapes and active outdoor activities make Utah a great fit for families with tweens and teens. The state’s famous “Mighty 5” national parks—Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef—offer an incredible mix of hiking, scenic drives, natural arches, towering red rock formations, and unforgettable adventures. You could easily plan an entire family road trip around exploring these five parks! Don’t miss our guide to the best national parks for kids.

Best For

Families with older kids who can handle heat, sun, and longer hikes. Shoulder seasons (late April–May, late September–October) to avoid triple-digit summer temps.

Key Strengths

  • Endless options for hiking, canyoneering, and scenic drives
  • Small outdoor-oriented towns with bike rentals, cafés, and outfitters
  • Can pair with a day or two in Las Vegas as a contrast

Possible Limitations

  • Heat and sun exposure require serious hydration and sun protection
  • Popular trails and viewpoints can be crowded; timed entry systems change often

15. Short “Test Trip” Family Travel Ideas with Baby or Toddler: Nearby City Staycation

A smiling blonde woman wearing sunglasses while on vacation at one of my family vacation destination ideas

A 1–3 night trip within 1–3 hours of home to practice traveling with a baby or toddler. Traveling with toddlers requires careful planning and packing, and a low-stakes first trip is the smartest way to learn what your family actually needs.

Why It Stands Out

Low travel time, low stakes, and a great way to figure out what to pack before your big family trip. Try nearby mid-size cities like Chattanooga if you’re near Nashville, or Milwaukee if you’re near Chicago. Southern Californians can head to Palm Desert or Lake Arrowhead for a fun getaway. In South Dakota, Sioux Falls features beautiful waterfalls and family-friendly parks that make for a surprisingly great trip with a young child.

Best For

New parents nervous about flying or long drives with a baby. Weekends in any season.

Key Strengths

  • Access to playgrounds, children’s museums, and stroller-friendly walks within walking distance of most hotels
  • Hotels or Airbnbs that provide cribs, high chairs, and kitchenettes
  • Builds confidence for bigger 2027 family vacations

Possible Limitations

  • May not feel as “exciting” as flying to a dream destination, but still incredibly valuable
  • Temptation to overpack since you’re close to home-practice intentional packing instead

How to Choose the Right Family Trip Idea

The “right” idea depends on your kids’ ages, your budget, your time off, and your travel style. Start by picking the type of experience you want-adventure vs. relaxation vs. culture-before locking in a destination.

Choose Based on Your Kids’ Ages and Temperaments

For babies and toddlers, lean toward a nearby city staycation, beach week, all-inclusive, or camping close to home. Elementary-age kids thrive in Orlando, San Diego, DC, the Smokies, and on a New England road trip. Teen-friendly family friendly destinations include NYC, Utah parks, London and Paris, Costa Rica, and cruises. Factor in sensory needs, sleep schedules, and patience for crowds or long travel days.

Choose Based on Budget and Time Off

The average US family trip costs around $4,200 for an 8-day trip, but your range will vary wildly. Lower-budget options include camping, nearby road trips, and DC. Mid-range covers the Smokies, San Diego, and beach rentals. Higher-budget trips include Orlando, Europe, all-inclusives, and cruises. Shoulder-season travel (early May, mid-September) drops costs on pricier trips significantly. Planning is essential for enjoyable family road trips-booking lodging and activities early saves both money and stress.

Choose Based on Travel Style (Planner vs. Spontaneous)

Some ideas demand advance planning-Orlando, Yellowstone, and Europe all need reservations months out. Others allow last-minute bookings: local camping, a nearby city hotel room, or some beach rentals. If you’re a highly structured planner, lean into complex itineraries. If your family is more spontaneous, pick simpler trips. Family Adventures Blog offers detailed destination guides and packing lists for both styles-check out our summer vacation ideas for families for even more inspiration.

Which Family Travel Idea Is Best for You?

  • Choose Orlando theme parks if you want a big, memorable “wow” trip and your kids love rides and characters.
  • Choose Yellowstone & Grand Teton if your family lights up at wildlife sightings and wide-open landscapes.
  • Choose San Diego if you need mild weather, flexible days, and plenty of kid-friendly options.
  • Choose Washington, DC or New York City if you want maximum museums, history, and culture packed into a short time.
  • Choose a Gulf Coast beach week or all-inclusive in Mexico if you’re in a busy season of life and mostly want to relax together.
  • Choose Smoky Mountains, Utah parks, Costa Rica, or camping if outdoor adventure and unplugged time are your top priorities.
  • Choose a nearby city staycation if you’re just starting to travel with kids and want a low-pressure practice trip.

Final Thoughts on the Best Family Travel Ideas

Five young kids posed with cacti while on a family vacation in Scottsdale

The best family travel idea is the one you can realistically afford, feel excited about, and actually book-not just dream about. I promise your kids will remember simple moments like hotel pools, s’mores by the campfire, and their first subway ride just as much as the big-ticket attractions.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
