And Joshua Tree National Park sure has a way of stopping you in your tracks. Maybe it’s the otherworldly rock formations, the spiky silhouettes of the Joshua trees themselves, or the way the desert light seems to glow at sunrise and sunset.

Let’s start with the obvious. You can’t visit without seeing the Joshua trees themselves, and the densest concentration is along Park Boulevard between the West Entrance and the Hidden Valley area.

These quirky, Dr. Seuss–looking plants are actually a type of yucca, and they only grow in a small region of the Mojave Desert. Sunrise and golden hour are especially magical times to see them, when the low light creates long shadows and warm tones across the desert.

Drive to Palm Springs

You already know that I love Palm Springs. And, it’s only about an hour away from Joshua Tree. Palm Springs offers a totally different desert experience—mid-century architecture, aerial tramway views, and great dining. It pairs surprisingly well with a Joshua Tree trip.
