JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort Review (2026): Is It Worth It for Families?

A view of the JW Marriott San Antonio water park from my room's balcony

When we were planning our visit to San Antonio, Texas over spring break, we looked at several hotel options in Hill Country. But once I saw the waterslides and lazy river at the JW Marriott San Antonio water park, I didn’t need to look any further. I knew this San Antonio resort would be a great option for my kids and their cousins (plus you know I love a lazy river).

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa: Quick Overview

  • Best for: Families who want a resort-style stay with tons of on-site activities
  • Standout feature: The 9-acre River Bluff Water Experience with a 1,100-foot lazy river
  • Location: Texas Hill Country, about 25 minutes from downtown San Antonio
  • Dining: Multiple on-site restaurants, but not all-inclusive
  • Resort vibe: Large, upscale, activity-packed

Good to know: This is a large resort that often hosts conferences, so it can feel busy during peak times.

Because we were visiting both Austin and San Antonio during our spring break trip, we only booked two nights at the JW resort But they were the last two nights of our trip, so it was definitely like the cherry on top. We used free nights from my Marriott credit card to stay here for free. When we booked it, we didn’t realize we’d be there for the Valero Open. That means it would’ve been a pain to come and go from the resort, but luckily, we had no intention of leaving once we were there.

Our favorite part was definitely the JW Marriott San Antonio water park: River Bluff Water Experience. This 9-acre waterpark consisted of water slides, an impressive 1100-ft. lazy river, a kid’s pool with small waterslides, a whirlpool spa and a sand beach pool. There was food and beverage service offered at the pool, and plenty of chaise lounges to choose from.

What It’s REALLY Like Staying Here

The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa is big—like really big. With over 1,000 rooms, it’s one of the largest resorts in the area, which means there’s always something going on.

During peak times like summer and spring break, it can feel lively and busy, especially around the pools and common areas. But the trade-off is that there are tons of activities for kids, from poolside games to evening entertainment.

If you’re looking for a quiet, boutique-style stay, this probably isn’t it. But if your goal is to keep kids entertained without ever leaving the property, this resort absolutely delivers. My kids were so excited to see the resort as we drove up. It really delivers the WOW factor I was looking for.

Other Fun Things to Do

Besides the JW Marriott San Antonio water park, there are other fun activities for kids at the resort. One is a fun scavenger hunt throughout the hotel. The kids were given a list of things to find and take pictures of, and then once complete, they would get to exchange for a prize at the front desk.

As far as rooms go, I think they were plenty spacious and comfortable. Our room had a Juliet balcony, with beautiful views of the resort.

There are a handful of restaurants to choose from at the resort, ranging from a fine-dining steakhouse to a much more casual sports bar. There is also a Starbucks in the resort. We made it easy on ourselves by ordering pizza the first night. On our full day at the resort, we ordered lunch by the pool and and enjoyed dinner at the sports bar.

I love that the resort had a beautiful patio area just outside the main lobby and restaurants, where the kids could all run around and play. Our boys immediately joined in with another group who was playing some football in the grass. There was also an inside-game area, with shuffleboard and chess/checkers. It all made for a very family-friendly atmosphere.

Another perk was watching the fireworks at the resort. I’m not sure how often these fireworks happen, but we stayed on a Wednesday and Thursday night, and they went off on the Thursday night. It was a true finale to an amazing vacation. Overall, I can definitely see why this resort tops the list of the best San Antonio family resorts and the most fun hotels for kids in the U.S.

Best Time to Visit

If you’re planning your stay around the water features (which you probably are), timing matters. The water park is open year-round. The waterslides, pools and lazy river are heated to a comfortable temperature in the winter months, which helps families enjoy it even in the off season.

  • Summer: Best overall experience—everything is open and lively
  • Spring break: Fun but crowded
  • Fall: Fewer crowds, still warm enough for pools
  • Winter: Quieter, but you may not get the full water park experience

If your kids are most excited about the lazy river and slides, aim for late spring through early fall.

What’s Included (and What Costs Extra) During Your JW Marriott San Antonio Water Park Stay

One thing that can be a little confusing when booking is what’s actually included in your stay.

Included:

  • Access to the River Bluff Water Experience (lazy river, slides, pools)
  • Daily resort activities and entertainment
  • Fitness center access
  • Basic amenities like WiFi (with resort fee)

Costs Extra:

  • Dining and drinks at on-site restaurants
  • Cabanas and premium pool seating
  • Spa treatments at Lantana Spa
  • Some kids’ activities and special experiences
  • Parking (both self-parking and valet parking)

It’s not an all-inclusive resort, so it’s worth budgeting for meals and extras ahead of time.

Pros:

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible.
