Transform Your Backyard with an In-Ground Trampoline

Why We Chose an In-Ground Trampoline
When we decided to add a trampoline to our backyard, we quickly realized that an in-ground option was the way to go. Not only do in-ground trampolines blend seamlessly into the landscape for a cleaner look, but they also eliminate the need for a tall safety net and reduce the risk of big falls. It’s a win-win for both aesthetics and peace of mind—especially with kids around.
Anytime anyone comes over to our house, the biggest hit seems to be our trampoline. Trampolines are fun in general, but having an in ground trampoline adds a unique element of excitement for the kids. And if I’m being honest, it’s much less of an eyesore for us adults.
While it takes more effort up front than a traditional above-ground setup, the end result is worth it. Here’s how we tackled the project, step by step, along with some discount codes below if you want to tackle this project as well. And be sure to check out my other ideas for designing a kid’s dream backyard.

The first thing you might notice when looking into in ground trampolines is that they do cost quite a bit more than a standard trampoline. I do have some discount codes to help save a bit of the total cost. And technically, you can use your existing trampoline and just place it in the ground. However, you will need a few things in order for that to work.
You would need to build a frame that helps to retain the sides of the hole. And you would need to purchase vented trampoline pads. Without vented pads, you will have a lot more resistance and noise from the trampoline. These pads make a ton of difference.

The most labor-intensive part of this project is obviously the digging of the hole. We hired laborers to help get the job done more quickly, and because we needed to have sprinkler lines relocated. Paying for the labor and the hauling away of dirt and rocks was the bulk of the cost. We live on a canyon and have a very rocky backyard. This made for much more physically-demanding work.

One thing that you’ll need to consider if you choose to do an in-ground trampoline is how much it rains where you live. We’re in San Diego, so rain isn’t a huge issue. But we still wanted to have draining options to avoid stagnant water and mosquitoes. Therefore, we made the center of our hole about a foot deeper than the rest of the hole. Then we put gravel down at the base.

The in-ground trampoline kits include the retaining wall, which helps to keep the walls of your hole sturdy. You can see this in the picture above, prior to putting this entire frame in the hole (as pictured below).
My husband ended up putting a sump pump underneath to prevent stagnant water.

If you purchase an in ground trampoline kit, the design allows the trampoline to fit flush with the ground, rather than having a raised lip.

Once you complete your inground trampoline project, you’ll find that there are a variety of fun add-ons you can purchase. We’ve recently added trampoline LED lights that go around the circumference of the trampoline and a dome tent that goes over the whole thing. Again, you can use promo code FAMILYADV10 to save 10% off any trampoline accessories. Click here to check out my favorite trampoline accessories.
