We recently stayed at Refugio State Beach on our way up the California coast to Big Sur, and it was the perfect halfway point to break up the drive. Rather than spending an entire day in the car, we stayed one night here, enjoyed an evening by the beach, and woke up refreshed before continuing north. Before we left, we were already planning our next trip back.

My husband had childhood memories of Refugio State Beach camping so he was excited to get to bring me and the kids there. I love trying out new beach campgrounds, so I was totally on board. Luckily since we only needed one night, it was easy enough to snag a cancellation after setting up alerts on my favorite campground scanning app.

Why We Loved Refugio State Beach Camping

Refugio State Beach sits along one of the prettiest stretches of Highway 101, about 20 miles north of Santa Barbara.

Unlike many California beach campgrounds that feel crowded and busy, Refugio has a much more laid-back atmosphere. Tall palm trees line the campground, the beach is only a short walk away from most campsites (no stairs like South Carlsbad, or steep hike like San Clemente), and the entire park has a relaxing coastal vibe.

If you’re searching for one of the best beach campgrounds in Southern California, this one absolutely deserves a spot on your list.

It also makes an excellent overnight stop if you’re driving between Southern California and destinations like Big Sur, Monterey, or Northern California. I’m definitely adding this to my Pacific Coast Highway road trip guide.

What the Campground Is Like

One of the things we appreciated most was how easy everything was to access.

The campground has over 65 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents. Most sites include:

• Picnic table
• Fire ring
• Nearby restrooms
• Drinking water

Some sites have more privacy than others, while a handful sit closer to the beach and command beautiful ocean views. Although there aren’t full hookups, many RV campers still enjoy staying here thanks to the spacious sites and unbeatable location. And the campground roads are paved and easy to navigate, making it suitable for larger trailers and motorhomes as well.

The Beach

One thing that was unique about the beach is how calm the water is. I felt like we were sitting on the edge of a lake, not an ocean. And actually, because we could see the off-shore islands in the distance, it actually reminded me a lot of Lake Tahoe. Minus being in a forest setting, haha.

The calm waters make it a nice place for families with young kids to splash around near the shoreline. But just note that the water is chilly! My kids went in and got used to the cold after awhile, but many other swimmers had wetsuits on.

A short walking path leads directly from the campground to the shoreline where you’ll find:

• Calm ocean views
• Soft sand
• Palm trees
• Picnic areas
• Plenty of space to relax

It’s also a beautiful place to enjoy sunrise or sunset without ever needing to get back in your car.

Things to Do at Refugio State Beach

This campground doesn’t have much around it. We’re used to camping at San Elijo State Beach where we can grab pizza one of the nights and walk to Starbucks in the morning. But this campground is much more quaint, and really doesn’t have a ton to do around it. But there’s plenty you can do right inside the state park.

The most obvious answer is to enjoy the beach. There’s enough sandy area that you can enjoy some of your favorite beach games. Or you can check out some of my other favorite camping activities. When the kids were done swimming, we had fun simply playing some camping games with a beautiful beach view behind us.

Walk Along the Beach

The shoreline stretches in both directions, making it perfect for morning walks while listening to the waves.

Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

The protected cove often has calmer water than many nearby beaches, making it a popular place for kayaking and paddleboarding when conditions cooperate.

Fishing

Fishing is another popular activity, especially early in the morning or near sunset. Just be sure to have a valid California fishing license if required.

Bike Around the Campground (and stop at the small park)

The paved campground roads make it easy for kids to ride bikes while parents relax nearby. And there is a small park with a couple of swings and one of those old-school metal slides. I made my kids go down the slide just to experience a small part of my childhood.

Watch the Sunset

Don’t miss sunset.

The combination of the ocean, cliffs, and swaying palm trees creates one of the prettiest evening views along this stretch of coastline.

While Refugio isn’t a resort campground, it has everything you need for a comfortable stay.

The campground is well maintained, and everything was clean during our visit.

Best Time to Visit

Refugio State Beach is beautiful year-round, but spring through early fall tends to offer the warmest weather. Summer is especially popular thanks to the longer days and ideal beach weather.

It’s easy to see why many families consider this one of the top summer camping destinations along the California coast.

If you prefer fewer crowds, September and October can be fantastic months to visit. The weather often stays warm while the campground is much quieter.

How to Book Refugio State Beach Camping

Reservations are highly recommended, especially during weekends, holidays, and throughout the summer.

You can reserve campsites up to six months in advance through the California State Parks reservation system.

If you’re hoping to camp during peak season, set a reminder and book as soon as your reservation window opens. The most desirable sites often disappear quickly. And as I mentioned above, you can use this app to help score cancellations if you miss the booking window.

Nearby Attractions

One of the best parts about staying here is its location. Several fun stops are within a semi-short drive. I’m listing those below. But even a trip to Solvang or San Luis Obispo, while a bit further, could be a fun outing for the day.

Santa Barbara

Spend the day exploring the waterfront, Stearns Wharf, or grabbing dinner downtown before returning to camp.

Gaviota State Park

Another beautiful beach park with hiking trails and scenic coastal views. My mom was actually staying at this campground while we were at Refugio, and it sounds like the two campgrounds are very similar. Gaviota is even smaller than Refugio though, with only about 30 sites.

El Capitan State Beach

Located just a few minutes away, this is another fantastic campground worth visiting if Refugio is fully booked.

Is Refugio State Beach Worth It?

Absolutely.

Whether you’re planning a longer California coast adventure or simply looking for a peaceful beach camping weekend, Refugio is a great spot to spend some time and enjoy the sunsets.

For us, it served as the perfect overnight stop on our way to Big Sur, but after seeing how beautiful the campground was, we’d happily return for a longer stay. One of our friends is actually trying to put together a group camping trip here next year over Memorial Day weekend. I’m not sure how easy it will be to snag spots, but I think going with a group would be a lot of fun. We could also try for the group site.

The beach, palm trees, easy access to the ocean, and relaxing atmosphere make it one of those places that reminds you why California beach camping is so special.
