Throughout my entire childhood, we always spent at least one week of the summer going beach camping. We switched it up from time to time–some years camping at South Carlsbad State Beach campground, and other years camping at San Elijo, San Clemente or Doheny.

But South Carlsbad was always my personal favorite for a variety of reasons. Of all the Southern California beach campgrounds, it had one of the nicest sandy beaches. It didn’t have the steep hike down to the sand like San Clemente. It didn’t have the train noise that San Elijo used to have (it’s so much better now). And it had better waves than Doheny.

Why We Love Camping at South Carlsbad

There’s something special about waking up with the Pacific Ocean right outside your campsite. At South Carlsbad State Beach campground, many campsites sit directly along the coastal bluff, giving you front-row seats to sunsets that honestly don’t even look real.

One of the biggest reasons families love camping here is the combination of convenience and scenery. You get beautiful coastal camping without having to drive hours into the wilderness. It’s close enough for a quick weekend trip but still feels like a true getaway. We always beach camp in a huge group, so the convenience of South Carlsbad was appealing, as some families had to leave for various sports tournaments or work schedules during our week of camping.

The campground also has a really relaxed atmosphere. Kids ride bikes through the campground, people gather around campfires at night, and nearly everyone heads down to the beach at some point during the day.

As erosion has taken place along the bluffs over the years, some of the stairs have had to be removed. Check the map when looking at sites because some campsites are a bit of a walk to the nearest stairs now.

Sites vary quite a bit, which is something to know before booking. Some campsites are tucked farther inland, while others sit directly along the bluff with incredible ocean views.

If you’re hoping for an oceanfront campsite, you’ll want to reserve as early as possible because those spots book up extremely fast — especially during summer and holiday weekends.

The Best Campsites at South Carlsbad State Beach Campground

The bluff-front campsites are definitely the most sought-after. These sites overlook the ocean and give you amazing sunset views right from your picnic table. Most of them are pretty large in size as well, although that varies.

That said, even the inland sites still have a lot going for them. The campground itself is beautiful, with mature landscaping, easy beach access, and plenty of room for biking and walking.

A few things to know when choosing a site:

• Bluff sites are more exposed to wind
• Inland sites can offer more privacy
• Some RV spots are easier to back into than others

If you’re camping with kids, staying closer to the bathrooms and the steps to the beach can actually be really convenient.

Tips for Making Reservations at South Carlsbad State Beach Campground

If you’re hoping to camp at the South Carlsbad State Beach campground, especially during summer, one of the biggest things to know is this: reservations are extremely competitive. This is one of the most sought-after beach campgrounds in San Diego. But if you can snag a spot, you’ll quickly see why.

Reservations for the South Carlsbad State Beach campground are made through ReserveCalifornia, and campsites can be booked up to six months in advance.

A few reservation tips that can really help:

• Create your ReserveCalifornia account ahead of time
• Know your preferred campsite numbers before booking opens
• Be logged in before reservation release times
• Have flexible dates if possible
• Midweek stays are often easier to book
• Fall and winter camping can be much easier to reserve – and the fall is still a great time to beach camp!
• Premium beachfront sites are the most popular and therefore are harder to get

Another helpful thing to know is that cancellations do happen regularly. If you missed out initially, it’s still worth checking back often because people change plans all the time — especially in the weeks leading up to a trip. And honestly, even if you don’t score an oceanfront campsite, the inland sites at South Carlsbad State Beach campground are still fantastic. You’re never very far from the beach, and the entire campground has that laid-back coastal camping atmosphere people come here for.

Beach Access

One of the best parts about staying at South Carlsbad State Beach campground is how easy it is to get down to the sand. There are stairways leading from the campground bluff down to the beach below. And on the south side, there is a ramp that leads down.

The beach itself is wide, scenic, and usually less crowded than many nearby Southern California beaches. There’s plenty of room to set up your favorite beach games. And during low tide, you can walk for quite a while along the shoreline.

This beach is great for:

• Surfing
• Boogie boarding
• Beach walks
• Tide pooling
• Sunset watching
• Sandcastle building
• Fishing

Keep in mind that the stairs back up to the campground can feel like a workout after a full beach day — especially if you’re hauling coolers, chairs, and sandy kids back to camp.

Things to Do Near the Campground

One thing that makes this campground especially great for families is that you’re close to so many fun activities.

Nearby attractions include:

• LEGOLAND California
• Carlsbad Village
• The Flower Fields
• Batiquitos Lagoon
• San Elijo Lagoon

We especially love heading into Carlsbad Village for coffee or an easy dinner after a beach day. It’s only a short drive from the campground and has tons of great restaurants and shops. It’s also easy to have food delivered into the campground.

The South Carlsbad State Beach campground has more amenities than many California beach campgrounds, which makes it especially appealing for longer stays.

• Fire rings

The Camp Store at South Carlsbad State Beach Campground

A newer addition to the South Carlsbad is The Camp Store. There’s always been a camp store there, but now it’s so much more than a basic campground convenience store. It’s a fun mini beachside hangout spot right inside the campground.

Located near the entrance to the South Carlsbad State Beach campground, the Camp Store has become a destination all on its own for both campers and locals. It’s part camp store, part casual restaurant, and part sunset-view gathering place. In fact, it’s San Diego’s only bluff-top restaurant experience. They play live music and even hold special events, like their Jurassic Park event.

Inside, you’ll find all the camping basics you may have forgotten, including:

• Firewood
• Ice
• Snacks and drinks
• Ice cream
• Beach gear
• Camping supplies
• Souvenirs

But the real surprise is the food scene. The Camp Store serves pizzas, burgers, breakfast burritos, tacos, and other casual beach-camping favorites, along with beer and wine. After a long day at the beach, grabbing pizza while watching the sunset from the bluff is the perfect ending to the day.

Another thing campers love is the live music. On many evenings, local musicians perform outside on the patio overlooking the ocean, creating a really fun atmosphere that feels more like a laid-back coastal festival than a campground snack shack. And you can reserve tables and fire pits for a fee.

The Camp Store also offers beach rentals, which can be super convenient if you don’t want to haul all your gear from home.

And if you happen to forget something while camping at South Carlsbad State Beach campground, chances are the Camp Store probably has it. That convenience alone makes camping here feel a little easier and a lot more relaxing.

Is South Carlsbad State Beach Campground Worth It?

Absolutely. If you love beach camping, it’s hard to beat the location and atmosphere of South Carlsbad State Beach campground.

It has that classic Southern California coastal camping feel that’s becoming harder and harder to find — ocean views, campfires, beach days, bike rides, and sunsets all wrapped into one trip. It’s one of my favorite family campgrounds in Southern California.

Whether you’re planning a family camping trip, a couples getaway, or a weekend escape with friends, this campground delivers a really memorable experience.

And honestly, there’s something pretty magical about ending the day watching the sunset over the Pacific from your campsite while hearing the waves crash below. That alone makes camping at South Carlsbad State Beach campground worth the trip.
