That being said, it’s still super competitive to get spots here during the summer. But even when it’s booked at capacity, this campground has more of a spread out feel to it. It doesn’t feel as tight as the Doheny campground. And the beach has plenty of sand and space to spread out and play some of your favorite beach games.

The campground at San Clemente State Beach is well-designed and easy to navigate, with separate loops for RVs and tents. As a kid, I loved exploring the campground on bike. There are some fun bike trails with “jumps” (they’re tiny, but so fun!) that we would explore. It has a lot more area to explore compared to the straight lines of South Carlsbad and San Elijo.

Unlike Doheny State Beach campground, where you’re camping even with the water, this campground sits on a bluff above the beach. And it’s a bit of a walk down to the sand (and uphill on the way back). A trail leads from the campground down to a bridge where you go under the train track and then you reach the beach.

Once you’re down there, you’ll find:

• Wide sandy beaches
• Great surf (this area is popular with surfers)
• Plenty of space to spread out

We camped here many of my childhood summers and this hill was not my favorite part at the end of a beach day. We always had to haul up any gear that we brought down, so often we would forego our boogies boards and sand toys just to have less to carry. When I started camping with my own kids, I just used a wagon to haul everything up and down.

There is a bathroom at the beach (thank goodness!), so once we were down there, we’d stay put until we were ready to call it a day. That means bringing lunch and snacks down to avoid multiple trips up the hill.
