The Best Vacation Destinations in January

January isn’t typically the month that comes to mind when you think about taking vacation. Most people’s minds go straight to the warmer summer months, spring break or the holidays for some extra family time. But January is actually a great time to travel. Some of the best vacation destinations tend to be less busy in January, after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Plus, you could probably use the extra rest after the past two busy months.

Whether you’re craving a winter wonderland or a warm, sunny escape, there’s something extra special about kicking off the year with a trip that helps you reset, recharge, and start the year on a happy note. If you want to get real crazy, you can even plan a New Year’s Eve getaway and literally start the new year in a fun destination. I have a whole list of great New Years Eve family resorts that go all out for the holiday.

Meanwhile, here are some of the best vacation destinations to visit in January—along with what makes each one shine during this time of year. And, if you have your heart set on a dreamy winter snow trip, be sure to check out this list of the best winter vacation destinations to make that vision come to life.

1. Maui, Hawaii

Maui is one of the best vacation destinations in January

If you’re dreaming of sunshine and palm trees, you can’t go wrong with Maui in January. The weather is warm, the beaches are beautiful, and it’s prime whale-watching season! Humpback whales migrate to the waters around Maui this time of year, and you can often spot them breaching right from the shore. Spend your days relaxing on Ka’anapali Beach, driving the scenic Road to Hana, or catching a sunrise at Haleakalā National Park.

If you plan to bring the whole family, I have plenty of resources for you to make the most of your trip:

2. Park City, Utah – One of the best ski vacation destinations in January

For snow lovers, January is the perfect time to hit the slopes—and Park City is one of the best winter destinations in the U.S. This charming mountain town has two world-class ski resorts, which are among the best family ski resorts in the U.S. Plus, there’s snow tubing, ice skating, and cozy lodges that are perfect for après-ski relaxation. If you visit toward the end of the month, you’ll also catch the Sundance Film Festival, which brings a fun buzz and a bit of Hollywood glamour to this small ski town.

3. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is one of the best vacation destinations in January

If you’re looking for sunshine, turquoise water, and all-inclusive resorts, Cancun delivers big time in January. The weather is warm and dry—ideal for lounging on the beach or exploring nearby Mayan ruins like Chichen Itzá or Tulum. Snorkeling in the cenotes (natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water) is also a must. Bonus: It’s not quite as crowded as spring break season, so you can enjoy a little extra space to relax.

4. Banff, Canada – One of the best cold-weather vacation destinations to visit in January

January transforms Banff into a snow-covered paradise straight out of a postcard. Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, this destination is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, or simply soaking in the famous Banff Upper Hot Springs surrounded by snowy peaks. The nearby town of Lake Louise is just as magical—with its iconic frozen lake where you can ice skate right in front of the Fairmont Chateau.

5. Palm Springs, California

Palm Desert is one of the best vacation destinations in January

If you prefer a dose of desert sunshine without the scorching summer temps, January is one of the best times to visit Palm Springs. Days are warm enough for pool lounging or exploring, but cool enough for hiking in Joshua Tree National Park or riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for incredible mountain views. The mid-century modern architecture, boutique hotels, and family-friendly resorts make this a fun and easy winter getaway.

Check out this list of my favorite things to do in Palm Springs with kids for even more ideas on how to spend your time.

6. Costa Rica – One of the best warm-weather vacation destinations in January

Costa Rica is one of the best vacation destination in January

January marks the start of Costa Rica’s dry season, making it an ideal time to visit for jungle adventures, beach time, and wildlife spotting. Head to Manuel Antonio National Park to see monkeys and sloths, or explore the Arenal Volcano area for ziplining, hot springs, and waterfalls. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, Costa Rica has a little bit of everything.

I’ve created an amazing Costa Rica itinerary that checks off many of the best things to do in Costa Rica. And, I have resort options for all kinds of travelers. Check out these popular posts:

7. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is one of the best vacation destinations in January

If you’re looking for something lively, New Orleans has the perfect mix of great food, live music, and culture. January is a fantastic time to visit before the Mardi Gras crowds arrive in February. You can still enjoy early-season parades, stroll through the French Quarter, and warm up with a bowl of gumbo or some beignets at Café du Monde.

If you happen to visit with kids, I have a list of some fun family-friendly activities you can add to your New Orleans itinerary.

8. The Florida Keys

I couldn’t create a list of the best vacation destinations in January without mentioning Florida. When the rest of the country is bundled up, the Florida Keys are basking in breezy, tropical sunshine. January is the perfect time to snorkel in the coral reefs, visit quirky Key West, or just relax with a key lime pie in hand. The drive along the Overseas Highway—where you’ll see turquoise water stretching for miles—is an experience all on its own.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
