Best Family Costa Rica Resorts in San José: The Gateway to Costa Rica
1. Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen

Why it’s great for families:
Located just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown San José, this luxurious hacienda-style hotel is perfect for families needing a comfortable base before exploring the country. The expansive grounds include a pool, tennis courts, and a kids’ club. Parents can unwind at the spa while kids enjoy supervised activities.
Note: I wouldn’t opt to spend more than a night or two in San Jose. There are so many great cities to explore in Costa Rica, and families who book an entire week in San Jose tend to spend a lot of time in the car. But it’s a great option for a night near the airport and for those looking to explore the city a bit.
Family perks:
- Spacious rooms with connecting options.
- On-site dining with kid-friendly menus.
- Close proximity to the airport and local attractions like the National Museum.
Arenal: Volcano Views and Adventure
When you stay near Arenal, you’re close to many of the best things to do in Costa Rica. Below are the best family resorts in the Arenal/ La Fortuna areas. Make sure to check out my guide to La Fortuna to see the many fun things to do there as well. You can also check out my tried-and-true Costa Rica itinerary, which includes a few nights in Arenal.
For the Arenal area, the best time to visit is during the dry season from mid-December to April. That stretch usually brings plenty of sunshine and little rain for family outings. Weather varies by region throughout Costa Rica, but May to November often means lower prices and fewer crowds, and June and July can bring brief breaks in the rain.
2. The Springs Resort & Spa

Why it’s great for families:
Nestled in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano in the Arenal area, this resort is a paradise for adventure-loving families. It’s an especially good fit for active families who want both outdoor adventure and downtime. As one of the best Costa Rica resorts with hot springs, it combines natural pools with volcano views for families. The “Club Rio” adventure center offers river tubing, rock climbing, and horseback riding, and Costa Rica often offers ziplining experiences for kids ages 6-12 depending on the operator.
Family perks:
- Suites and villas with plenty of space for large families.
- Kid-friendly pools with waterslides.
- Complimentary activities like guided nature hikes on nearby hiking trails.
3. Los Lagos Hotel, Spa & Resort

Why it’s great for families:
Los Lagos is a fantastic choice for families seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation, and it’s a great value option for many families visiting La Fortuna. Located near the Arenal Volcano, the resort offers thermal pools, waterslides, and lush gardens filled with wildlife; family-friendly hotels in Costa Rica often stand out for multiple pools and kid-friendly activities, and this resort does both well. It’s an excellent spot for kids to explore nature while parents unwind.
This is where we chose to spend the first few nights of our trip. In the La Fortuna area, most families prioritize resorts with lots to do on-site. The spacious rooms, volcano views, on-site hot springs and super fun waterslides sold us! Click to read about our experience at this hotel.
Family perks:
- Multiple thermal and regular pools with waterslides.
- Butterfly garden and frog farm on-site.
- Affordable family packages and spacious rooms; dedicated family rooms with multiple beds are relatively rare in Costa Rica, so the extra space and bedding flexibility here are a big plus. There was plenty of room for our family of 5!

6. JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa

Why it’s great for families:
Set on a secluded beach, this high end resort sits on a large property and combines relaxation with adventure, making it one of the best family Costa Rica resorts in the Guanacaste region. The kids’ club offers daily activities, so younger kids benefit from the kids clubs, while older children often enjoy surfing lessons or more active outings like exploring nearby mangroves. The infinity pool with ocean views is a hit with all ages.
Many families choose Tamarindo because the beach is known for relatively safe swimming conditions for kids.
Family perks:

- On-site babysitting services
