The Best Warm Winter Destinations When You’re Over the Cold

As I write this, most of the country is experiencing extreme weather conditions. So I can only imagine that people are rapidly getting out their passports and trying to decide which warm-weather winter destination they can escape to the fastest. If winter where you live means gray skies, bulky jackets, and counting down the minutes until spring, you’re not alone.

Every year, thousands of travelers search for warm places to visit during the winter season, hoping to swap chilly days for sunshine and relaxation. And I don’t blame them.

I usually embrace the cold through the December–I love the cozy feeling of the holidays. But by the time January rolls around, I start daydreaming about sunshine, warm sand, and wearing sandals without regret. That’s usually when I start searching for the best winter vacations—places where winter feels more like an extended summer break.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with kids, or planning a multigenerational escape, these warm-weather spots are perfect for trading snow boots for flip-flops.

Southern California: Sunshine Without the Passport

Two children playing on the beach in Coronado--one of my favorite warm weather winter destinations. They are holding up sand dollars, with a ship in the background and waves gently lapping at the shore.

I know I’m biased, but Southern California is obviously one of my favorite warm winter destinations, especially for families. I spent Martin Luther King weekend enjoying the sunshine in Coronado. And I even walked away with a little bit of a sunburn. That’s the kind of winter we experience here. Winter temps are often in the 60s and 70s, and the vibe is relaxed but still full of things to do.

San Diego is a standout with its beaches, zoo, tide pools, and walkable waterfront. Be sure to visit a local farmers market for fresh produce, local treats, and a taste of the area’s vibrant culture. You can explore La Jolla, watch sea lions at the cove, bike along Mission Bay, or just let the kids burn energy at the beach while you soak up the sun. And, Palm Springs is also a fantastic winter escape. Especially if you want warm days, pool time, and easy hikes without summer heat.

Why it’s great in winter: Fewer crowds, mild weather, and tons of outdoor activities without the peak-season chaos. Check out my other post where I discuss all the reasons why winter in San Diego is amazing

Hawaii: A Classic Warm Winter Destination for a Reason

Hawaii might be the gold standard when it comes to warm winter destinations. Winter brings slightly cooler temperatures (think upper 70s), which honestly makes it ideal for exploring.

Maui, Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island all offer something different. You’ll find beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, whale watching, and some of the best family-friendly resorts around. You can explore vibrant coral reefs and unique marine life while snorkeling, or hike through tropical rainforests that make up much of Hawaii’s lush scenery.

The Big Island is a great island for adventure seekers, with Volcanoes National Park as a big draw for visitors interested in volcanic landscapes and geothermal wonders. Winter is also humpback whale season, which adds a pretty magical bonus if you’re visiting with kids.

Why it’s great in winter: Warm ocean temps, lush landscapes, tropical rainforests, and that unbeatable aloha vibe when much of the mainland is freezing.

Mexico: Easy & Affordable Warm Winter Destination

Mexico consistently ranks high on lists of warm winter destinations—and for good reason. Winter is peak season, but the weather is nearly perfect in many of the most popular cities. Puerto Vallarta is another favorite with calm beaches, charming old-town streets, and a reputation for great food and incredible food experiences, from street tacos to upscale dining. We booked a long January weekend in Puerto Vallarta, and the weather was perfect–a high of about 80 each day.

Cabo San Lucas is great for families who want resort amenities and easy excursions like whale watching and boat tours. Cancun and the Riviera Maya offer beautiful beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and ruins like Tulum that add a little adventure to your trip. Scuba diving is also a top activity in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. There are plenty of vibrant reefs and marine life to discover. Or, consider a day trip to nearby cenotes or Isla Mujeres for even more to explore.

Why it’s great in winter: Dry season weather, warm water, and lots of family-friendly resort options.

Florida: Warm, Familiar, and Surprisingly Versatile

Florida is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most accessible warm winter destinations in the U.S. South Florida—think Miami, Naples, and the Florida Keys—stays especially warm and sunny during winter months.

The Florida Keys, made up of several major islands, are famous for world class diving and scuba diving, making them a top choice for underwater adventure seekers. You can explore vibrant coral reefs and may even spot sea turtles while snorkeling or diving. For a unique day trip, consider visiting Dry Tortugas National Park (also known as Tortugas National Park). It’s a remote national park accessible by boat or seaplane from Key West. And it’s known for its pristine waters, coral reefs, and bird watching.

If you’re traveling with kids, Orlando is an obvious pick. There are plenty of theme parks and resorts with lazy rivers to enjoy. But don’t sleep on beach towns like Clearwater, Sanibel Island, or Marco Island for a more relaxed vibe. You’ll still get warm days and plenty of sunshine without needing a passport.

Why it’s great in winter: Short flights for many families, warm temps, and a mix of beach and theme-park fun.

Costa Rica: Warm, Wild, and Full of Adventure

Costa Rica, located in Central America and close to South America, is a top pick if your idea of a warm winter getaway includes wildlife, waterfalls, tropical rainforests, and a little adventure. Winter in the U.S. lines up with Costa Rica’s dry season, making it one of the best warm winter destinations for outdoor exploring.

Along the coast, you’ll have the chance to spot sea turtles and unique marine life, especially while snorkeling or visiting nature reserves. You can split your time between the beach and the tropical rainforest, spot sloths and monkeys, soak in hot springs near Arenal, or just relax on the Pacific coast. For a fun day trip, visit a national park or wildlife reserve to experience Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity up close. Check out this perfect 8-day Costa Rica itinerary that gives you all of that. Costa Rica is surprisingly family-friendly and great for kids who love nature.

As I mentioned above, our winter is actually the start of dry season in Costa Rica. So you’re escaping the cold and seeing this country at its peak when you choose to go here in the winter months.

Why it’s great in winter: Dry weather, lush scenery, and endless outdoor activities.

The Caribbean: Small Islands, Big Winter Escape Energy

The Caribbean island region checks every box when it comes to warm winter destinations. You’ll find turquoise water, white sand beaches, and warm breezes all winter long. It’s no surprise that the Caribbean is widely considered one of the best winter destinations for families seeking sun and relaxation.

Among the major islands, Aruba, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and St. Lucia are some of the best Caribbean islands for families, with their calm beaches and easy resort stays. Notable Caribbean islands like Saint Martin—shared by the French and Dutch as Saint Martin and Sint Maarten—and Saint Kitts, part of the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, also offer fantastic family-friendly resorts and unique cultural experiences. Many islands offer direct flights, making them feel surprisingly doable even for shorter trips.

Why it’s great in winter: Consistently warm weather, calm seas, and total “I forgot what winter is” energy. Plus, you can stay at awesome resorts, like the Atlantis, for a fraction of the cost you’d pay over spring break.

Gulf Shores: A Hidden Gem

If you’re searching for a warm winter destination that feels like a true escape from the usual crowds, Gulf Shores, Alabama, deserves a spot on your list. This charming coastal town is famous for its powdery white sand beaches and gentle Gulf waters. It truly offers a peaceful retreat from cold weather and winter blues. Unlike some of the more crowded winter destinations, Gulf Shores has a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone craving a much-needed break.

Outdoor activities abound here, from kayaking and paddleboarding to dolphin cruises and nature trails. The mild winter weather means you can spend your days soaking up the sun, building sandcastles, or simply strolling along the shoreline without ever needing more than a light jacket. And when hunger strikes, you’re in for a treat. Gulf Shores is known for its incredible fresh seafood and local cuisine. Whether you’re sampling shrimp straight off the boat or enjoying a waterfront dinner, the flavors are as memorable as the scenery.

With fewer crowds and a welcoming, small-town feel, Gulf Shores is a hidden gem among warm winter destinations. It’s the kind of place where you can truly unwind, reconnect with nature, and savor the best of Southern hospitality—all while leaving your winter coat at home.

Best Time to Visit Warm Winter Destinations

Timing your winter getaway can make all the difference in your experience—and your budget. If you travel around the holidays, you might find higher flight prices than other winter weeks. We’ve had good luck traveling in early January for much cheaper than the same trip in December. You can also adjust your dates by a day or two to see if that helps. I use Google Flights to help me find the best deals.

Destinations like Costa Rica and many Caribbean islands enjoy their dry season during the winter, making them ideal for hiking, water sports, and exploring diverse ecosystems without worrying about rain. Meanwhile, places like San Diego and Key West offer year-round mild weather. So you can enjoy outdoor adventures and local festivals even outside the peak season.

Some warm weather destinations also host special events during the winter months, from food festivals in Puerto Vallarta to lively celebrations in Key West. No matter when you go, the best time to visit is when you can balance great weather, fewer crowds, and prices that fit your travel budget. With a little planning, your ideal winter getaway is just a flight away!

During the winter months, you’ll find mild weather, plenty of outdoor activities, and a lively atmosphere in these destinations. Especially in popular spots like Puerto Vallarta or the Virgin Islands.

Planning your trip in mid February or early November can mean fewer crowds and better deals. That helps to make your winter vacation even more enjoyable. Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
