Explore San Juan Capistrano: A Charming SoCal Getaway

San Juan Capistrano is one of Southern California’s most charming historic towns — a place where heritage streets, blooming gardens, and relaxed coastal vibes come together in a way that feels like hitting the slow-down button. There are so many cute things to do in San Juan Capistrano that are unique to this coastal town. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, tea lover, or just someone who enjoys a picturesque stroll, it’s a place everyone can find something to enjoy.
As I’ve mentioned before, I spent a week every summer of my childhood at our timeshare in San Clemente, which isn’t very far from San Juan Capistrano. We’d visit San Juan Capistrano from time to time, but as a child, I’m not sure I appreciated it as much as I do now.
I most recently visited San Juan Capistrano on a day trip with my girl friends so that we could go to the famous Tea House on Los Rios. I instantly fell in love and can’t wait to bring my daughter back for a visit.
Getting There: By Car or Train?
Of course, you can drive easily from Los Angeles, San Diego, or anywhere in Southern California — it’s about an hour south of LA and 75 minutes north of San Diego, depending on traffic. Just hop on I-5 and exit toward the mission district. But we all know how traffic on the 5 can be, so plan accordingly if you go this route.
Or one of the most fun ways to arrive — especially if you want to skip the freeway — is by train! The Pacific Surfliner stops in San Juan Capistrano, offering scenic coastal views on the way down or up the coast, plus the convenience of stepping off and walking straight into town. It’s a relaxing, traffic-free way to make your day feel a little more like a getaway.
The train station is centrally located, so once you’re there, most of the key spots are within walking distance. (Bonus: locals often combine their rail trip with a meal or coffee near town afterwards.)
Must-Visit Attractions in San Juan Capistrano
Historic Mission San Juan Capistrano

You can’t talk about SJC without mentioning Mission San Juan Capistrano. This beautifully preserved Spanish mission dates back to the 18th century and is one of California’s most iconic historical sites. Wandering the gardens, fountains, museum spaces, and ruins gives you a real feel for the region’s past — and there are picnic spots if you want to linger a while.
Los Rios Historic District

Just a short walk from the mission lies the Los Rios Historic District, California’s oldest residential street. It’s full of preserved adobe homes, quaint shops, and leafy streets — a perfect place to explore on foot, take photos, or just grab a coffee and people-watch.
We enjoyed walking around here and visiting some of the shops. A few of us also visited the palm reader, which made for some fun stories to share.
And while you’re here…
Stop for Tea: One of the Most Popular Things to do in San Juan Capistrano

No visit feels complete without a stop at The Tea House — specifically The Tea House on Los Rios. Tucked into a historic cottage right on Los Rios Street, it’s the spot locals and visitors alike recommend for a relaxed afternoon tea, complete with scones, finger sandwiches, pastries, and plenty of loose-leaf teas.
With its romantic gardens and laid-back vibe, it’s ideal for a special brunch or celebratory afternoon catch-up. I’d highly recommend a girls trip here, a birthday outing for your mother or daughter, a Mother’s Day celebration, or any other excuse to gather your favorite ladies for an afternoon tea.
Booking ahead is a good idea — especially on weekends — as tables fill up quickly.
