Hideaway Beach in Princeville, Kauai

A scenic view of Hideaway Beach on Kauai with turquoise water, golden sand, lush green cliffs, and bright blue skies.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit this… we’ve stayed on the north shore of Kauai multiple times now, and somehow totally missed Hideaway Beach every single visit. It wasn’t until a few nights into this last trip—while chatting with a handful of people in the hot tub—when we heard it mentioned over and over. Everyone kept saying, “Oh, you haven’t been yet? You have to go.”

So of course, we had to go. And wow—why did no one grab us by the shoulders and make us go sooner? It was literally just steps away from our resort, and yet it felt like a completely different island.

A Beach That Looks Straight Out of the Caribbean

When we finally made the trek down, Hideaway Beach absolutely blew us away. It honestly looked like a Caribbean postcard had somehow been dropped onto the north shore. The water was unreal—bright, clear, and that perfect shade of turquoise that makes you want to dive in immediately.

And despite that crystal-clear water, the beach still feels rugged and wild, the way Kauai does best.

Where Hideaway Beach Is Located on Kauai

Hideaway Beach (also called Pali Ke Kua Beach) sits just below the Princeville area on Kauai’s north shore. It’s tucked beneath the cliffs near the Pali Ke Kua condo complex, right next to the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. I mean, it only makes sense that one of the island’s most beautiful beaches is just steps away from one of the most gorgeous resorts.

To reach it, you’ll park near the small public beach access trailhead across from the entrance to 1 Hotel. From there, a steep hiking path leads down the bluff to the water. The trail is short—only about a quarter mile—but it’s rocky, uneven, and sometimes muddy, which is why this stunning beach stays relatively uncrowded.

If you’re staying anywhere in Princeville, you’re incredibly close; it’s one of the area’s most conveniently hidden gems. We stayed at the Hanalei Bay Resort, which is also totally walkable to this beach. But because it’s literally below the cliffs, you wouldn’t know it was there unless someone told you… or unless you overheard your fellow hot tub buddies talking about it like we did. That’s how we almost missed it, again!

All the Shade You Could Ever Want

One of the best surprises? The shade. Hideaway Beach in Kauai has tons of it—so much, in fact, that by the afternoon we actually struggled to find a sunny spot to sit in. If you’re someone who prefers filtered light or wants to keep the kids protected without hauling a giant umbrella down the trail (and trust me, you want your hands free for the steep hike down), this place is a dream.

Calm Waters + Sea Turtles = Kid Heaven

Our kids loved playing in the water at Hideaway Beach in Kauai. This is a great snorkeling spot because the water is calm. We didn’t even need the goggles to see fish swimming by. And as if the setting weren’t magical enough, we even spotted sea turtles bobbing around in the water. That was the highlight of the day for the kids (and honestly, for me too).

Getting There: What to Expect

Here’s the thing: Hideaway Beach is not the easiest place to access. The trail down is steep, uneven, and can get slippery depending on recent weather. It definitely requires decent shoes, steady footing, and maybe even a deep breath before you start the descent.

But let me just say—every step is worth it.

Once you reach the bottom, the scenery gets even more stunning, and you’re rewarded with one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Also, just a heads up–Hideaway Beach and Secret Beach are two different beaches. Both have short hikes to access and feel like they’re on their own island, but they are in fact different. I have all the info you need for checking out Secret Beach as well.

Final Thoughts on Hideaway Beach, Kauai

I’m still kicking myself that we skipped Hideaway Beach on our earlier trips, but better late than never, right? If you’re staying in Princeville or nearby, make the effort to check it out. Between the shade, the soft waves, the snorkeling potential, and the occasional turtle sighting, it’s everything we love about Kauai wrapped into one gorgeous little cove.

Just be prepared for the trek down—and trust me—your future self lounging under the palm trees will be so glad you went.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
