When we visited Kauai in late 2022, the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Resort was in the final stages of being transformed. Prior to that, it had been the St. Regis Princeville Resort. We stayed at the Hanalei Bay Resort just next door, so I loved walking by the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay and watching the transformation take place. I could tell it was going to be an absolutely beautiful resort. And I couldn’t wait for the day that I could give the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Resort a review myself.

Tucked into the lush, tropical landscape of Kauaʻi’s North Shore, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a resort that seems to have been crafted as a love letter to nature, relaxation, and island-style living. Perched above a shimmering bay, framed by mountains and ocean, it’s more than just a luxurious getaway — it’s a place where wellness, adventure, and Hawaiian spirit meet in harmony. They truly found a way to capitalize on the beautiful views so that you can enjoy them throughout all aspects of your day.

Review: What 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Offers

🌿 Rooms, Design & Vibe

• The resort offers 252 rooms (including 51 suites) with views ranging from ocean to mountains — and often both.
• Interiors follow the resort’s commitment to nature and sustainability, and the guest rooms lean into natural materials with reclaimed teak furniture, textured bathroom walls, Bamford bath products, and a Nespresso machine. There are no single use plastics in guest rooms, with metal water bottles provided instead.
• Suites and connecting rooms make it easy for families or groups to stay together, especially the “Makana Penthouse,” which offers two king beds and ocean-view access for a luxury resort feel.

The hotel’s commitment to sustainability also shows up in its living roofs, which help reduce carbon dioxide.

🏖 Pools, Beach & Outdoor Fun

• The resort fronts Puʻu Poa Beach. Guests have direct beach access and stunning views for swimming, tide-pooling, snorkeling, paddle boarding, or simply relaxing on the sand.
• You’re a short walk away from the gorgeous, tucked-away Hideaway Beach as well.
• There are multiple pools: a main family-friendly pool on the ground level with shallow areas, in-water lounge chairs, and hot tubs, plus a lagoonish “keiki” pool for kids and an adults-only infinity pool with cabanas if you want to spend time poolside.
• For the adventurous: surfing (the bay is known for waves good for beginners and more experienced surfers), snorkeling, paddleboarding, and other water activities, and guests can borrow snorkel gear, kayaks, and paddleboards.
• On the land side: tennis, pickleball, golf at the nearby championship course (Princeville Makai Golf Course), hiking, kayaking, and even helicopter/motor-less tours — there’s a lot to do in Princeville for outdoor experiences if you like activity.

• The resort’s wellness focus is no joke. There’s a full 10,000-square-foot gym with modern equipment, Peloton bikes, and various classes, plus Anatomy fitness studio for yoga, cycling, and personal training. And all with ocean or tropical-forest views.
• The spa (Bamford Wellness Spa) offers a broad menu: from traditional massages and facials to more cutting-edge treatments like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, float-room relaxation, saunas, and meditation pods.
• Sustainability is baked into the resort’s DNA — from rain-water harvesting and native landscaping to energy-efficient design and reclaimed materials, while also supporting local communities and helping guests connect more closely to the natural world and marine life.

🍽 Review: Food & Local Flavor at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Resort

One thing 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay does really well is food, with 7 food and beverage outlets that serve fresh, thoughtfully sourced ingredients and menus that feel very “Kauaʻi.”

• 1 Kitchen is the resort’s main restaurant and the heart of the dining scene. You’ll find farm-to-table Hawaiian-inspired dishes made with local produce, seafood, and proteins. It’s open for breakfast and dinner and works well for families, serving familiar options alongside more elevated plates for adults. Breakfast here is especially popular, and the views alone make it a favorite.
• Welina Terrace is the spot for sunset. This open-air lounge focuses on small plates, cocktails, and incredible views over Hanalei Bay. It feels a bit more grown-up, but older kids are welcome earlier in the evening. It’s a great place to unwind after a beach day, with live music and sunset views adding to the evening atmosphere.
• The Sandbox is the most casual option — perfect for pool days and quick bites. Think smoothies, light meals, snacks, and kid-friendly options with a bit of a juice bar feel, without having to fully dry off or change. This is a favorite for families.
• Neighbors Cafe has a variety of coffee and breakfast options that you can enjoy with breathtaking views.
• In-room dining is also available, which can be a lifesaver with jet-lagged kids or early nights. The menu still reflects the resort’s focus on quality ingredients, so it doesn’t feel like an afterthought.

Overall, the dining scene here leans more fresh, local, and health-conscious rather than theme-park casual. It’s great for families who enjoy good food and don’t mind slightly elevated menus. But if you’re looking for pizza buffets or character dining, this isn’t the place.

Review: Is The 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay Resort Good Fit for Families?

Short answer: It can be — but with a few caveats depending on what kind of family vacation you’re aiming for.

• The resort offers a dedicated kids-club program called Seedlings Aloha Camp, a kids program for kids ages 6 to 12, with fun and educational daily activities like yoga, painting, and Hawaiian dance.
• The Ohana Activity Room provides games for older kids.
• The family-friendly pool and shallow lagoon pool make it easier for younger kids to splash around.
• You’re just steps away from the sand and beach. No having to load up the car just so your kids can make sandcastles.
• Suites and connecting rooms give enough space for families to stay comfortably together.
• For older kids (or more adventurous families), activities like snorkeling, surfing lessons, beach outings, and kayaking offer memorable shared experiences.

⚠️ Things to Keep in Mind

• The resort has an interesting layout, and it’s not the easiest to navigate. There are different elevators that you use to access different floors, and there are a lot of stairs throughout the property.
• The beach’s coral and tide pools make it beautiful and interesting. But for small children, you’ll want to monitor carefully: tidepooling and snorkeling are best suited to kids who can navigate uneven surfaces and water safely. If they just want a sandy beach with waves to play in, there are better options.
• The vibe overall leans toward a somewhat relaxed, wellness-oriented, even adult style — not a rowdy or hyper-kid-focused resort. That may be a plus for many, but if you were expecting a “kids everywhere” vibe, this may feel more calm than chaotic. Nobody wants a vacation where they have to worry about their kids disturbing others the whole time.
• There are no resort or parking fees, which helps families better weigh the value. For longer stays, the rest of the perks may include a $500 USD resort credit on stays of 5+ nights.

In short: For families who want a blend of luxury, nature, wellness, and calm with access to kid-friendly amenities and space — 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay can be a great fit. For those expecting a super-kid-centric or highly active “full-speed” resort vibe, it might feel a little more serene and grown-up than expected, though the overall service is warm, friendly, and helpful. Who This Resort Is Best For (And Who Might Want Something Else)

Perfect for

• Families who care about environmental sustainability and want a resort that reflects those values. It’s the only luxury resort on Kauaʻi with that values-forward feel.
• Guests who want wellness — spa, yoga, fitness — alongside beach and nature. Many leave feeling inspired and renewed after time immersed in the setting.
• People who appreciate comfort, design, and luxury but also value a relaxed pace, especially if they’re choosing among the Hawaiian Islands and want something that stands apart from many neighboring islands options.

Less ideal for

• Families with very young kids or toddlers who need lots of lawn space, play-area structures, or easy stroller access. The hotel’s layout isn’t ideal for lots of running around. Instead, check out these more family-friendly resorts.
• Folks looking for a “kids-crazy” resort, waterparks, or nonstop child-centered action.
• Travelers who need quick in-and-out access — high-rise rooms + elevators + beachfront hikes can add time and logistical friction.
• Travelers on a budget. There are plenty of more affordable resorts in this area.

My Take: A Balanced, Thoughtful Hawaiian Escape 🌺

So, here’s my honest take: the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a beautiful resort that pulls out all the stops, and I would stay here in a heartbeat if I was looking for a romantic couple’s getaway or a girl’s trip where relaxation was a focus. Even at check in, getting a full calendar of activities on arrival makes the stay feel especially organized. But if planning a family trip to Kauai, which let’s be honest, will be my reality for the next decade, I would probably opt for a resort that is more tailored to kids and where I won’t have to worry about my kids being too loud or splashing too much.

But for a family who wants luxury, sun, surf, yoga mats, local food, lush tropical views, and maybe even their own “ohana” vibe for a week — this could be just right, especially if you want to enjoy the rest of the amenities without feeling pressured to leave the property.
