An Overview of the Various Holland America Dining Options

If you’ve ever traveled with kids, you know that meals can make or break a vacation. Between picky eaters, short attention spans, and the occasional “I’m not hungry” meltdown (that’s inevitably followed by “I’m starving” 20 minutes later), dining while traveling can be… an adventure.

The good news is Holland America makes family dining at sea surprisingly easy. Whether your crew loves trying new foods or prefers sticking to chicken tenders and fries, you’ll find plenty of options that work for everyone. And the best part, there are so many good options that are included with the fare you pay. Here’s what to expect when dining with kids on Holland America.

One of the first things parents notice is how many dining choices there are onboard. Holland America’s ships typically have:

  • The Main Dining Room – A sit-down experience that feels upscale but still family-friendly. You can order from a rotating menu, and the servers are wonderful with kids. Expect options like pasta, chicken, steak, and simple sides, plus a dedicated kids’ menu with favorites like pizza, burgers, and mac and cheese.
  • The Lido Market (Buffet) – This is Holland America dining option is a parent’s best friend. You’ll find everything from sandwiches and fruit to tacos and made-to-order pasta. It’s relaxed, quick, and perfect for when you don’t want to wrangle kids through a multi-course meal.
  • Dive-In Burgers & New York Deli – Poolside burgers, hot dogs, and pizza? Enough said.
  • Room Service – Sometimes you just want to eat breakfast in your pajamas or feed a sleepy toddler without leaving the cabin. Holland America’s complimentary room service options make that easy. Sometimes we would order snacks and appetizers to have in the room while getting ready for dinner, just so the kids never got too hungry while having to wait until our dinner time.

Specialty Dining—Yes, With Kids!

While some of the specialty restaurants lean more adult, many families still enjoy them. The service is warm and welcoming, and kids are rarely out of place. And, as an added bonus, meals at the specialty dining restaurants are half price for kids 12 years old or under, or free when they order from the kids’ menu. A few standouts:

  • Canaletto – This Holland America dining option has fresh Italian favorites like spaghetti, lasagna, and flatbread pizza—always a hit.
  • Tamarind – For families with adventurous eaters, this Asian-fusion restaurant has delicious noodles, dumplings, and tempura.
  • Pinnacle Grill – Steakhouse-style dining that works well for a special family night out.

Pro tip: if your kids are younger, try going early in the evening when it’s quieter.

Desserts & Treats (a.k.a. the Real Highlight for Kids)

Let’s be honest—half the fun of cruising is the dessert situation. And I love being able to say yes to all the desserts. Holland America doesn’t disappoint. There’s ice cream at the Lido Market, often with toppings like sprinkles and chocolate sauce, plus nightly desserts in the main dining room ranging from brownies to sundaes to molten chocolate cake.

And if your kids are anything like mine, the soft-serve station will become their favorite “after-pool snack stop.”

A few small tips that make meals go even more smoothly:

  1. Bring familiar snacks. You can bring sealed snacks onboard—things like crackers, granola bars, or fruit snacks. These come in handy between meals or on long excursion days.
  2. Order early for little ones. In the main dining room, servers are happy to bring kids’ meals out first so they don’t get restless waiting.
  3. Mix up the venues. Alternate between casual buffet breakfasts and sit-down dinners so the kids don’t get bored.
  4. Don’t skip theme nights! Holland America often has special nights (like Gala Night or Indonesian Rijsttafel Night). Even if your kids don’t try everything, it’s fun for them to see the presentation and experience something new.
  5. Ask for flexibility. The staff is wonderful about customizing meals—simple grilled chicken, plain pasta, or no-sauce options are easy requests.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
