The view in Three Rivers California

When I first saw pictures of Three Rivers California I knew I needed to plan a visit. The picturesque setting with mountains in the distance and the river going right through town, plus the fact that it’s right at the gateway to the Sequoia National Park, really sold me. The amazing scenery and landscapes of Three Rivers make it a truly memorable destination.

Three Rivers is a charming little town and can make for a great stopping point on a longer road trip in California. Its location northeast of Sequoia National Park puts you close to key outdoor attractions. But it’s also a beautiful destination offering a perfect balance of relaxation and exploration opportunities.

Introduction to the Gateway Town

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Three Rivers, California, is the quintessential gateway town for anyone looking to explore the wonders of Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. Perfectly located at the entrance to these iconic parks, Three Rivers offers visitors a unique blend of small-town charm, breathtaking scenery, and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

What makes Three Rivers truly special is its setting at the meeting point of the North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork of the Kaweah River. This convergence not only gives the town its name, but also creates a haven for fishing, hiking, and riverside picnics. Whether you’re casting a line for rainbow trout, setting out on a scenic trail, or simply soaking in the views, the rivers are at the heart of the community’s outdoor lifestyle. And that’s what drew us to this town.

Three Rivers is more than just a place to pass through—it’s a welcoming community where you can relax, recharge, and connect with nature. Whether you’re planning a family trip, a weekend getaway, or a longer adventure, this charming California town is the perfect base for exploring the best of Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and the great outdoors.

Where to Stay in Three Rivers

We debated between staying in a house rental or camping in Three Rivers. Ultimately, we decided to stay in a property I found on VRBO. And I’m glad we did. It was super hot in late July while we were there, so we very much appreciated having air conditioning and easy river access. Many local rentals offer great amenities like pools, Wi-Fi, BBQ facilities, and convenient self check-in, making them comfortable and family-friendly. But I can imagine that Three Rivers would be an absolutely beautiful fall camping destination

The town of Three Rivers is very small. In fact, according to the United States Census Bureau, Three Rivers has a population of just over 2,000 residents and covers a total area of 31.1 square miles. Despite its small size, the town is big on hospitality and fun, making it a favorite stop for families, nature lovers, and adventure seekers alike. There are a decent number of Airbnb options along with some cabins that you can choose to stay in. There are small campgrounds in town as well, plus more up in the Sequoia National Park. However, lodging options inside Sequoia National Park are extremely limited. Most guests choose to stay in Three Rivers for more flexibility and choices.

Local hotels in Three Rivers provide welcoming hospitality, quality service, and amenities that rival or even surpass traditional hotel experiences. When booking, you’ll find nightly rates for rentals and hotels. So you can choose the number of nights that fit your trip. Guests consistently mention in reviews how much they appreciate the comfort, amenities, and friendly check-in process at these accommodations, which makes their stay enjoyable and stress-free.

What to do in Three Rivers California

Enjoying the river in Three Rivers California

Three Rivers, California offers lots to do there. But it’s also the perfect spot to just slow down and relax if that’s more your style. We did a mix of both. We explored the nearby national parks, but we also spent a lot of time just hanging out on the river. And our children even tried fishing a bit.

Spring is a great time to visit for wildflowers and river activities, while early summer offers optimal conditions for river rafting and outdoor fun. In winter, you’ll find a quieter atmosphere with peaceful hikes and fewer crowds.

When it’s time to eat, there are a handful of local places to grab food, like Sierra Subs, which is perfect for a quick lunch or takeout. Dinner options in town include casual spots serving comfort food, salads, and chili—ideal after a day outdoors. We did grocery shopping when we arrived so we could have some staples in the house. But we enjoyed eating out at local restaurants along the river.

Three Rivers also has a relaxed nightlife, with live music and community events that make for a laid-back evening. The town is home to local artists and art galleries, and you’ll find artists’ work featured throughout the community.

Don’t miss must-see attractions in Sequoia National Park like Crescent Meadow and Mineral King. Take a scenic drive along North Fork Drive to see historic sites and natural beauty, and stop by the Rivers Historical Museum to learn about local history.

A car is essential for getting around Three Rivers and accessing nearby attractions.

1. Visit the National Parks

When you stay in Three Rivers, you are at the gateway to Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon. Since this is the summer after my daughter finished 4th grade, we were still able to use her 4th grade national parks pass to visit for free.

We spent several hours one day exploring Sequoia National Park. Then on a different day, we decided to drive through from the other direction and spend some more time in the Kings Canyon side of the park. You can easily spend multiple days exploring these parks, especially if you want to spend time hiking. We only did two half-days, but it felt like we got a good overview of the main attractions and what these parks have to offer.

2. Lake Kaweah

You’ll pass Lake Kaweah as you drive into Three Rivers California. In the summer, Lake Kaweah is a hotspot for boating, swimming, and kayaking. There are kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals on site, along with wooden patio boats that you rent and spend the day on.

3. Visit Local Ice Cream Shop and Restaurants in Three Rivers California

There are cute shops and delicious restaurants in Three Rivers. I walked to Sequoia Coffee Company every morning and would get my coffee along with a delicious breakfast sandwich or tasty pastry. We enjoyed having ice cream at Reimers Candies & Ice Cream (which came highly recommended from several families before our trip).

Casa Mendoza, Ol Buckaroo and River View Bar & Grill are also local eateries that are very popular in town. I want to note that there is a grocery store in Three Rivers as well, but it is small and pretty limited on what you can buy there.

4. Spend Time on the River

The house we stayed at was located right on the river and that was definitely the best part of our trip. We loved sitting our chairs in the water and cooling off while the kids had fun splashing around. There were also natural rock waterslides that the kids had a blast on (and where all the locals came to play in the afternoons–they were so fun to watch as they did tricks on the rocks).

We also went to the mercantile in town and bought a fishing pole. The kids had a lot of fun fishing, although nobody caught anything.

Overall, this was a great family vacation for us. Three Rivers, California was a great blend of relaxing but still having plenty of opportunity to explore. We were there for 4 nights, and I felt like that was perfect.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
