I had an appointment with my esthetician today and she told me that I better be writing a blog post about how San Diego in the winter is such a great vacation destination. Even though she is from San Diego, just as I am, she said that she falls in love with our city all over again every winter. And honestly, I can see why. For many visitors, crossing the Coronado Bridge is part of the experience.

The highlight for many families? Ice skating on the beach. Yes—actual ice skating, with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop. Spending a night there can make the holiday atmosphere feel even more special. Even if you don’t skate, it’s fun to watch, wander the property, grab hot chocolate, and soak in the festive vibe.

Options to Camp on San Diego’s Beaches

Beach camping in San Diego is extremely popular in the spring and summer months–like nearly impossible to get spots. But competition is way less in the winter, and you can often luck out with beautiful weather. Sure, you might not be getting in the ocean without a wetsuit, but you have better chances at scoring a beachfront spot where you can watch the surfers and the sunsets without ever leaving your campsite.

We went beach camping with friends over Martin Luther King weekend in January, and we were able to get side-by-side oceanfront spots. We had sunny weather and beautiful views. It was perfect!

Unlike colder destinations, San Diego doesn’t “shut down” in winter. Many of the city’s best attractions are actually more enjoyable this time of year. And many of them are decorated for the holidays and even hold Christmas events that can add more enjoyment to your visit.

• San Diego Zoo & Safari Park: Cooler temps mean animals are often more active
• Sea World: A mix of marine life and rides for the kids, and younger visitors usually love the aquarium-style interactive exhibits.

There are also plenty of events that happen in San Diego throughout the winter. Mid December is an especially festive time for holiday events. The San Diego Rodeo, Monster Jam, Supercross, various running events, and more all take place in the winter.
