Niagara Falls With Kids

It might not come as a surprise to you that I love waterfalls. So it would only make sense for me to visit one of the most famous waterfalls in North America: Niagara Falls. We decided to visit Niagara Falls with kids and make a fun little family vacation out of it.
We took our toddlers and flew to Niagara Falls toward the end of September, and the weather was excellent. I didn’t have much of an agenda, but I knew we had to do the iconic Maid of the Mist boat tour so that we could really see the falls in all their glory.

Cave of the Winds Tour
When we were at the falls, we saw groups of people access an even more up-close-and-personal view of the falls. Back at our hotel, I learned that this is the Cave of the Winds tour, where you can get within 20 feet of Bridal Veil falls. Even if you’re visiting Niagara Falls with kids, this tour is a great option, as there is no height or age restriction.
I booked tickets for the next day and couldn’t wait. If you know that you are going to want to do this as well, I recommend you book the combo ticket that starts off with the Maid of the Mist tour followed by entry to the Cave of the Winds.

The Cave of the Winds tour starts off by taking an elevator ride 175 feet deep into the Niagara gorge. Then you follow a path that will take you to several different view points of the falls. If you dare, you can access the Hurricane Deck, where you will feel a generous misting (or soaking) from the falls, and the hurricane-like winds they create. Don’t worry, the tour provides ponchos and footgear for you to wear.

Kids Activities Near the Falls
If you’re worried there won’t be enough for your kids to enjoy when visiting Niagara Falls, worry no more. There are tons of hotels within walking distance to the falls, so you can come and go as you please. We spent some time at the falls, but then did some kid-friendly outings.
My kids enjoyed swimming in the indoor pool at the hotel and going to the Aquarium of Niagara. We ate dinner at the Rainforest Cafe, and then we returned to the falls at night. We stayed on the US side of the falls for the first night of the trip, but ventured to the Canada side the next day after our Cave of the Winds tour.

If you’re visiting Niagara Falls with kids, check out the Skywheel on the Canada side of the falls. It’s a fun way to see the falls, and my kids loved it. There are also ziplining options at the falls for those seeking an adventure. My kids were a bit too young at the time, but it looked awesome. You’ll find the ziplining on the Canada side.

Final Thoughts
Niagara Falls is definitely something you can experience in a day. Because we flew to Buffalo from the west coast, we wanted to enjoy some time both at the falls and in Toronto, so we made our visit into a 3-night trip so we could have more time to explore the area. I would definitely love to visit Niagara Falls with kids again when they are a bit older and will remember it better.
We saved money on this trip by using our Wyndham credit card for free hotel stays and our other travel credit cards to help cover the cost of flights.
