Is a Disney Cruise Worth It? Let’s Break It Down

When it comes to planning a family vacation, few options are as magical and widely discussed as a Disney Cruise. With their reputation for exceptional service, family-friendly activities, and enchanting touches, it’s easy to see why Disney cruises are so popular. But with higher price tags compared to other cruise lines, the question remains: Is a Disney Cruise worth it? Let’s dive into what sets Disney apart and help you decide if it’s the right fit for your family.

I’ve taken my family on two Disney cruises so far, and each time, we say that we need to try other cruise lines so we can compare the experiences. But time and time again, I find myself looking at and dreaming about another Disney cruise. In fact, I just booked my third. It’s truly the one thing I book that makes me more excited than anything else–so clearly, I think a Disney cruise is worth it. But it’s probably not for everybody.

What’s Unique About Disney Cruises?

Pirate Night is unique to a Disney cruise and helps set it apart

Disney Cruises are often described as a floating theme park with luxury amenities. Here are some standout features you’ll find on a Disney Cruise that may not be included with other cruise lines:

1. Exceptional Entertainment

Disney is known for its top-tier entertainment, and their cruises are no exception.

  • Broadway-Style Shows: Each ship offers nightly performances featuring Disney characters and stories, from “Frozen” to “Beauty and the Beast.” These productions rival anything you’d see on land.
  • Character Meet-and-Greets: Beloved Disney characters roam the ship, offering plenty of opportunities for kids (and adults!) to meet their favorites.
  • First-Run Disney Movies: Onboard theaters show new Disney films, often coinciding with their theatrical releases.

2. All-Inclusive Family Activities

Disney Cruises cater specifically to families, offering:

  • Kids Clubs: Supervised, themed areas for every age group, from toddlers to teens, with activities led by Disney-trained counselors.
  • Pools and Water Features: Think splash zones for little ones, thrilling water slides, and even adults-only pools for some quiet time.
  • Deck Parties: Themed celebrations, like Pirate Night, complete with fireworks—a Disney Cruise exclusive.

3. Stateroom Design

The spacious staterooms help make a Disney cruise worth it

Disney staterooms are thoughtfully designed with families in mind:

  • Split Bathrooms: Many staterooms include two separate bathroom areas, making it easier for families to get ready.
  • Extra Space: Disney staterooms are often larger than industry averages, offering more room to spread out.
  • Themed Decor: Every room features subtle Disney touches, adding a sprinkle of magic to your stay.

4. High-Quality Dining

Disney takes dining to the next level, and their food is a large reason why I think a Disney cruise is worth it. Check out this insight about all the Disney Cruise restaurants.

  • Rotational Dining: Guests rotate through themed restaurants, like Animator’s Palate, where meals are paired with interactive experiences.
  • Specialty Dining Options: While most dining is included, adults can enjoy gourmet experiences at upscale restaurants like Palo or Remy for an additional fee.
  • Dietary Accommodations: Disney is known for accommodating dietary restrictions with ease and flair.

5. Private Island Experience

Most Disney Cruises to the Caribbean and Bahamas include a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. Guests enjoy exclusive beaches, water activities, and all the magic Disney brings to its parks—but in paradise.

What’s Included in a Disney Cruise?

In order to decide if a Disney Cruise is worth it, you need to know what it includes. I actually have an entire blog post dedicated to covering what’s included in a Disney cruise. You can check it out for more detail, but here’s an overview of what your fare covers:

  • Meals in main dining rooms and casual eateries.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages at meals and throughout the ship.
  • Character experiences and entertainment — new releases at the movie theater, nightly Broadway-style performances, etc.
  • Kids clubs and most family activities.
  • Use of pools, fitness centers, and other onboard amenities.

Not Included: Specialty dining, spa treatments, excursions, alcohol, and gratuities are extra.

There are also extras you can purchase, like photo packages, alcohol tastings and princess tea parties. These are the Disney extras I feel are worth the splurge on your cruise.

How Does Disney Compare to Other Cruise Lines?

Price

Disney Cruises tend to be more expensive than competitors like Royal Caribbean or Carnival. However, fans argue that the quality of service, entertainment, and overall experience justify the cost. You won’t typically find Disney Cruises on sale, but there are some little tricks that can help. Like if you book through Costco, you get a cash card. And you can purchase Disney gift cards for 5% from Target and use those to help pay.

Check out my other popular post that compares Disney cruise vs Royal Caribbean if you want a more thorough analysis.

Target Audience

While other cruise lines cater to various demographics, Disney is squarely aimed at families, especially those with young children or Disney enthusiasts. Those looking for a more family-friendly atmosphere may find that a Disney cruise is worth it.

Unique Touches

The “Disney Difference” includes attention to detail, immersive experiences, and a magical atmosphere that’s hard to replicate.

Spacious Rooms

Disney Cruise Line is one of the few cruise lines that can accommodate families of 5 in one room. I have another blog post that breaks down the options for families of 5 on other cruise lines, and it actually shows that Disney isn’t that much more expensive than other cruise lines that you have to book a suite or two rooms to accommodate three children.

Is a Disney Cruise Right for You?

A Disney Cruise may be worth it if:

  • You’re traveling with young children who love Disney characters and movies.
  • You want a high-quality, family-focused vacation with minimal planning.
  • You’re a Disney fan looking to immerse yourself in the magic at sea.

It may not be the best fit if:

  • You’re on a tight budget and want a more affordable cruise option.
  • You’re traveling with adults or teens who aren’t Disney enthusiasts.
  • You’re looking for a party-centric or adrenaline-filled cruise experience.

Final Thoughts

A Disney Cruise isn’t just a vacation; it’s an experience. From the magical moments with Disney characters to the unparalleled entertainment and thoughtful design, it’s a dream come true for many families. While it does come at a premium price, the value it provides in creating lifelong memories may well be worth it. If your heart is set on magic at sea, a Disney Cruise might just be the perfect adventure for your family.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
