June Lake Skiing at June Mountain, CA

June Lake is an adorable mountain town not far from the ever-popular Mammoth Mountain. It’s one of my favorite California lakes to camp at. I’ve written about camping at Oh Ridge Campground in June Lake before, but June Lake also has a ton to offer in the winter months like June Lake skiing at June Mountain.

I grew up going to June Lake during my childhood, although we never once went skiing. We just never did as a family. So when I got older and wanted to go snowboarding, I never even thought about June Lake. I’d hit up the ski resorts in Big Bear, and when I had the opportunity, I’d head up to Mammoth for a longer getaway.

June Lake Skiing at June Mountain: What to Know
June Mountain Ski Area is a great ski resort for families, beginners, or groups looking to hit the slopes without the crowds you get in Mammoth. You’ll find 1500 acres of uncrowded slopes offering beautiful mountain views on family-friendly terrain. And it gets even better!
If you’ve ever bought a lift ticket, you know the skiing and snowboarding are not cheap hobbies. In fact, that’s the main reason my husband and I don’t go as often as we’d like. We have five lift tickets to purchase if we bring the kids, and they likely won’t hang long enough to make it worth it.
However, that’s one of the biggest perks of skiing at June Lake. Kids 12 and under get a free season pass to June Mountain. They can come back every single day–holidays, weekends, whenever, and it is completely free.

What to Expect at June Mountain
June Mountain has six lifts and more than 40 trails. It even has some terrain parks, which are still designed with family in mind.
Note: June Mountain usually opens around mid-December and stays open until sometime in April.
Once you’ve mastered skiing at June Lake, you can make the easy 25-minute drive to Mammoth Mountain if you’re seeking more thrills. You won’t find the same amazing deals or uncrowded slopes, but Mammoth Mountain has a ton to offer.

Besides skiing, you can also find areas to sled and snow tube in June Lake. Plus, you can hike to natural hot springs, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the 16-mile June Lake Loop. June Lake is not to be overlooked for your next ski trip.

Other Affordable Family Ski Lodge
June Mountain is one of the only ski lodges in California where kids ski free. For more resources, here’s a list of other ski resorts where kids ski free, along with this list of top family ski resorts throughout North America.
This year, instead of doing June Lake skiing, we’re venturing to Utah to try out Brian Head–another ski resort where kids 12 and under ski free every day. If you’re planning to try out Brian Head, Utah, be sure to check out these top family hotels in Brian Head.
