Top Kid-Friendly Restaurants in San Diego

Back when I was a kid, Denny’s and Chuck E. Cheese’s were pretty much it when it came to family restaurants in San Diego. Now there are way more options for parents to bring kids to restaurants where the kids can run around a bit without causing a disturbance to others. But I’m still amazed at the fact that new kid-friendly eateries aren’t popping up all over the place. It seems like a perfect business plan — offer food and drinks with a big open grass area for kids to run around, play some yard games, and be out of your hair.
There are some family restaurants that are doing it right. We’re lucky to have a variety of San Diego kid-friendly restaurants to choose from. And not only are they kid-friendly, they’re also delicious! I’ve compiled a list of some of the best family restaurants in San Diego. These are sure to please both children and adults alike. I’ve also found some of the best kid-friendly wineries in Southern California for you to check out as well.
If you’re just visiting, be sure to add some of these places to your San Diego travel itinerary.
Popular Neighborhoods for Family Restaurants in San Diego
Balboa Park is a central hub for family-friendly dining. And it’s conveniently located near the San Diego Zoo, making it easy to combine a meal with a visit to one of the city’s top attractions. La Jolla and La Jolla Cove are also must-see destinations, offering scenic ocean views, outdoor activities, and plenty of family-friendly restaurants. Mission Beach and Point Loma are popular neighborhoods with casual, kid-friendly dining options. Plus, North Park and East Village are vibrant areas known for their trendy, family-friendly restaurants and lively atmosphere. Petco Park is also close to many dining options. So you can easily enjoy a meal before or after catching a game or event. Although I think Petco Park has some of the best food inside the park.
As a San Diego local, I love sharing insider tips for family dining. Many restaurants offer reasonable prices, making dining out accessible for families. And sometimes you can save money by looking for bundled deals or passes when visiting attractions like the San Diego Zoo.
For a quick, affordable, and iconic fast food experience, In-N-Out Burger is always a hit with families. Some restaurants even feature a scenic bayside location with waterfront views, which really enhances the dining experience. Plus, many spots have outdoor games to keep kids entertained while parents relax. Classic kids menu items like chicken nuggets, chicken strips, grilled cheese, and French fries are widely available and always popular with young diners.
Central San Diego Family Restaurants
Corvette Diner, Liberty Station

If I’m going to write about family restaurants in San Diego, I have to start off with one of the most iconic choices. Rock ‘n roll, burgers and shakes–what’s not to love about this 50’s themed diner? While the Corvette Diner doesn’t have an outdoor play area, it does have an arcade that kids love. And it’s always fun to watch your server sing and dance in between delivering meals.
While the diner is famous for its indoor fun, the outdoor patio is a great spot for families to enjoy burgers and shakes while soaking up the sunshine.
The Corvett Diner also makes my list of top dessert places in San Diego.
Officine Buona Forchetta, Liberty Station
Not only does Officine Buona Forchetta have some delicious pastas, pizzas and calzones on the menu, it also has a playground for kids to play on. With two oversized patios and a secure play area, there’s plenty of space for you to relax and enjoy your wine while the kids are entertained.
The Crack Shack, Little Italy & Encinitas

For those craving comfort food, The Crack Shack offers a fun outdoor space at its Little Italy, Encinitas, and Pacific Beach locations. Kids love the lawn games and picnic tables. And even picky eaters will find something to enjoy from the menu. They serve favorites like crispy fried chicken, mini biscuits, and chicken tenders. The relaxed, casual atmosphere makes it easy for adults alike to unwind while the kids play.
With sand pits, yard games, and large outdoor patios, The Crack Shack is a fun place for your kids and your 4-legged friends. I like the Encinitas location because it has a large parking lot to make parking a breeze. But all three locations offer a full far, a tasty menu and lots of SoCal sunshine.
Station Tavern, South Park

This family restaurant in San Diego is one that really started a trend here. Station Tavern in South Park was one of the first of its kind that welcomed kids and dogs. It even had an enclosed play area for the kids. We loved having a drink while our kids played in the sandbox. The play train is gone, but the atmosphere still welcomes families, and the tater tots are a favorite in our family, for both the kids and the adults.
The Rabbit Hole, Normal Heights

The Rabbit Hole in Normal Heights is a great spot to catch a sports game while having the children entertained playing yard games on the turf. They have happy hour Monday-Friday from 5-7pm, and I personally love their Abnormal Tot-chos and Grande Tacos.
The Smoking Gun, Downtown

Enjoy urban street food and cocktails while your kids spend hours at the onsite arcade that’s full of retro games, ping pong, foosball and more. Happy hour is from 3pm to 7pm on weekdays and the menu has items such as pretzel bites, tater tots and cheeseburgers.
For another family-friendly option in downtown San Diego, check out my post about The Old Spaghetti Factory in San Diego. It might not have an outdoor space for kids to run around, but the kids menu and location make it a perfect spot for families.
Another great option is heading to Old Town, where you can eat outdoors in the San Diego sunshine, let the kids run around in the grass after dinner, and walk off your meal while visiting the nearby shops and museums.
North County Family Restaurants
Farmer & The Seahorse, Torrey Pines
At Farmer & The Seahorse, your kids will be entertained with lawn games outside and board games inside. And you all can enjoy the live music during happy hour and brunch.
Campfire, Carlsbad

Campfire definitely isn’t the cheapest dining option for families on this list, but it is one that kids love. This chic restaurant has an outside patio, a teepee for kids to play in, and it has DIY s’mores on the menu.
East County San Diego Family Restaurants
Eastbound Bar & Grill, Lakeside

Free popcorn, a horse ride and some coin-operated games makes Eastbound a fun spot for kids. Its large patio offers more than enough space for the kids to run around a bit, and the abundance of TVs means you can catch your favorite sports game. And if you’re in the area for the Lakeside Rodeo, this is a great place to pre-party. Make sure you try the carne asada chipotle cheese fries and watermelon margarita.
Grand Ole BBQ, El Cajon

Barbecue fans will love Grand Ole BBQ, where the large outdoor play area is just as much of a draw as the mouthwatering pulled pork sandwiches and chicken tenders. The whole family can enjoy the laid back atmosphere, live music, and classic BBQ favorites.
Smokey & The Brisket BBQ, La Mesa

Another fun BBQ spot is Smokey & The Brisket in La Mesa. This dining spot has a laidback and casual atmosphere, and the kids love the arcade games and pool table. Plus, the menu has plenty of kid-friendly options like mac n cheese, pizzas and kid-sized sandwiches and brisket.

Kids can run around, play lawn games like giant Jenga and cornhole, and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Parents can savor creative tacos and Mexican favorites while the little ones burn off energy in a safe, family friendly environment.
Pizza Port is another favorite among San Diego locals. Especially families who appreciate a lively, fun atmosphere. With several locations, Pizza Port features outdoor patios, arcade games, and plenty of picnic tables. It’s a great spot for pizza lovers of all ages.
Heading up to North County, Viewpoint Brewing Co in Del Mar is a standout for its scenic outdoor play area overlooking the beautiful San Dieguito Lagoon. Kids can play lawn games while parents enjoy craft brews and a menu full of kid friendly options. And all of that comes with a stunning view.
Finally, Belching Beaver in Vista is a great pick for families in North County. The fully enclosed outdoor patio means kids can play safely while parents sample local brews and enjoy a hearty meal.
