Your Guide to Keystone’s River Run Village

A large snow structure featuring the word 'KEYSTONE' carved into its surface, surrounded by snow and evergreen trees under a blue sky with wispy clouds.

Having grown up in Southern California, my options for ski resorts were always very limited. We were pretty much limited to Big Bear or Mammoth. I always dreamed of a mountain getaway that consisted of more than just hitting the slopes. I wanted an experience that combined incredible skiing, cozy alpine vibes, and a lively village where everything is within walking distance. And River Run Village in the Keystone Ski Resort delivered just that.

I first learned about Keystone when I was researching the best ski resorts for families in North America. And I totally influenced myself. Literally hours after reading about it, I had flights booked to Denver and I couldn’t wait to see it for myself. And now, after having visited, I know this will be a place we will return to again and again. We loved it that much.

Tucked into the Rocky Mountains just a short drive from Denver, Keystone is one of those places that feels both adventurous and easy—perfect for families, couples, and first-time skiers alike. And at the heart of it all? River Run Village—the social hub of Keystone and the place where most visitors love to stay, shop, eat, and unwind after a day on the slopes.

You don’t need to venture out of the Village to find an ice skating rink. Skating here with mountain views in the background is a highlight for many visitors. And it’s free in the Village–you just need the skates. We however, ventured to the 5-acre lake just outside of the Keystone Lodge & Spa. Skating on a frozen lake was such a novelty for us Southern Californians.

Keystone is about 90 minutes from Denver International Airport, depending on traffic and weather.

Most visitors either:

  • Rent a car
  • Use shuttle services from Denver
  • Book private transfers

We opted to rent a car, and it was super easy. That also gave us the freedom to rent gear just outside of Keystone, which saved a bit of money.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
