Things to Do in Telluride: A Year-Round Adventure

There’s something about when the weather starts to shift and the leaves start to change that really makes me start dream of the mountains. And I have been really longing for another trip to Telluride. I had originally thought I’d head to Colorado next summer, but now I’m leaning towards heading there either late fall or early winter. I’ve made a list of some of my favorite things to do in Telluride to help me decide when my next visit should be–hopefully you will find it helpful as well.
Tucked away in a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is one of those places that feels straight out of a postcard. Known for its ski slopes, summer festivals, and breathtaking scenery, this mountain town is the kind of destination that can keep you coming back in every season. Whether you’re visiting with your family like I plan to do, planning a romantic getaway, or chasing adventure with friends, there’s always something to do.
Let’s break it down by season so you can get a feel for all that Telluride has to offer.
Winter: Snow-Covered Magic

Telluride is most famous for its skiing and for good reason. The Telluride Ski Resort is one of the best ski resorts in Colorado and offers terrain for every level—from gentle bunny slopes for beginners to challenging runs for experts. Families will appreciate the ski school, which keeps kids entertained (and learning) while parents get some time to explore on their own.
Be warned though, Telluride is one of the pricier ski resorts. There are some ski resorts that allow kids to ski or snowboard for free in Colorado, but Telluride isn’t one of them.
Luckily, skiing isn’t the only winter draw. You can:
- Go Snowshoeing: Easy to learn and a great way to explore trails at your own pace.
- Try Dog Sledding: Imagine gliding through snowy forests pulled by a team of huskies—it’s unforgettable.
- Ride the Gondola: Even if you don’t ski, the free gondola that connects Telluride to Mountain Village is worth a ride for the views alone.
- Go Ice Climbing: For outdoor adventure enthusiasts, ice climbing is popular in Telluride. There are many spots and tours you can check out.
- Backcountry Skiing: For adventurers looking for personalized and exhilarating journeys into untouched terrain.
Hot tip: After a day outside, warm up with hot cocoa by the fire at one of the cozy cafés in town.
Spring: Quiet Beauty

Spring is shoulder season in Telluride, which means fewer crowds and peaceful mountain vibes. It’s the perfect time for a relaxing escape. While some restaurants and shops may have shorter hours, you’ll find plenty of space to breathe and enjoy the beauty around you.
Great spring activities include:
- Wildlife Spotting: Elk, deer, and even the occasional black bear start to become more active as the snow melts.
- Spa Days: Treat yourself to a wellness break—many resorts and hotels have excellent spas with mountain views.
- Hiking Lower Elevations: Some trails open up early and give you a taste of the summer hiking season to come.
Summer: Festivals & Family Fun

I personally love a mountain retreat in the summer time. Lake life is the best lift IMO. And if you’ve only known Telluride as a ski town, summer there will blow your mind. The mountains transform into a lush green playground, and the town comes alive with festivals and outdoor activities.
Some summer highlights:
- Hiking & Biking: Trails for every level, including family-friendly hikes like Bear Creek Falls (an easy trail with a rewarding waterfall at the end).
- Rock Climbing: For an even bigger adventure, check out the popular rock-climbing spots–there are plenty!
- Trout Lake: Take a paddleboard or kayak for a relaxing day on Trout Lake.
- Festivals: From the Telluride Bluegrass Festival to the Telluride Film Festival, summer is packed with world-class events.
- River Adventures: Rafting and fly fishing on the San Miguel River are popular options for families and adventure-seekers alike. There are full-day or half-day rafting tours to choose from.
- Scenic Drives: If you’re up for a little off-road adventure, the drive to Imogene Pass offers jaw-dropping views.
Pro tip for families: Bring bikes and ride the scenic Valley Floor Path, a flat trail perfect for kids.
Fall: Golden Colors

Autumn in Telluride is pure magic. The aspen trees light up in shades of gold and orange, and the crisp air makes it the ideal time for outdoor adventures.
Things to do in fall include:
- Leaf-Peeping Hikes: Try the Jud Wiebe Trail for incredible fall foliage.
- Jeep Tours: Explore old mining roads with a guided tour that’s both adventurous and family-friendly.
- Hot Springs Day Trip: Head out to nearby Ouray (about an hour away) for a soak in natural hot springs surrounded by mountains.
Fall also tends to be a quieter time, making it a great choice if you prefer a more laid-back trip.
Family-Friendly Things to do in Telluride for Every Season

No matter the season, here are a few things that families especially love in Telluride:
- The Free Gondola: Kids love the ride, parents love the views.
- Town Park: A great spot to let little ones run, with a playground, swimming pool, and plenty of green space.
- Ice Skating in Winter / Festivals in Summer: Town Park transforms with the seasons, always offering something fun.
- Exploring Downtown: The historic charm, boutique shops, and casual eateries make for easy afternoons together.
What to Look for in a Family-Friendly Telluride Stay
Before diving into specific properties, here are features you’ll want to prioritize (and check) when choosing lodging in Telluride:
- Proximity to the gondola / lifts / ski lesson areas – Saves walking or shuttle hassles.
- Spacious units, suites or condo-style lodging with extra bedrooms, kitchenettes, or full kitchens — very helpful for families.
- Kid-friendly amenities: game rooms, children’s programs, complimentary meals for kids, indoor or outdoor pools, hot tubs.
- Shuttle service or easy access to restaurants / shops so you don’t always have to drive.
- Spa / wellness / après features for when grownups want downtime.
- Flexibility in check-in / check-out, laundry, in-unit washers/dryers to make a longer stay smoother.
Telluride is split between the Mountain Village and the historic town. So the area you choose to stay in will totally determine the vibe of your trip. Mountain Village puts you closer to slopes and ski infrastructure; staying in historic Telluride gives better walkability, more dining & local flavor, and access to the free gondola to get up to the village.
Mountain Village & Slope-Side Resorts (Best for Ski Access & Family Convenience)
These are ideal when you want to minimize time commuting and maximize slope time (or just easy outdoor access in summer).

- Large spa, indoor/outdoor pool, children’s game room, fitness center, and family-friendly dining

- Residences and suites with kitchens for families who want a bit more flexibility
This is a reliable middle ground: nicer than a basic lodge, but more approachable than ultra luxury.
3. The Inn at Lost Creek

Smaller, boutique, and cozy, this is a good choice for families who want something quieter but still close to the action.
- Ski-in / ski-out or easy ski access and ski valet / storage
- Suites and condos with kitchenettes and in-unit washers/dryers (great for kids)
- A complimentary breakfast, cookies, and a rooftop hot tub
- Even though it’s boutique, guests have access to spa amenities at the Peaks Resort
If your family values quietness and boutique charm over big resort scale, this could be perfect.
4. Mountain Lodge Telluride

A more “homey” option with condo-style lodging.
- Offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos and log cabins (some units with full kitchens)
- Outdoor heated pool, hot tub, fitness center, shuttle service to the village

A luxurious in-town option by the same parent company as the Madeline.
- High-end finishes and design
- Residences and upscale suites
- Proximity to restaurants, shops, and the gondola
If you want the luxury of Madeline but prefer being in town rather than up in Mountain Village, this is an elegant choice.
Other Boutique & Legacy Hotels
- New Sheridan Hotel — A historic, small boutique option in downtown Telluride.
- Camel’s Garden Hotel & Condominiums, The Victorian Inn, Hotel Columbia — these are smaller, locally-loved inns in town, good options for those who prefer local character over big resorts.
They don’t always have big resort amenities (pools, spas, etc.), but they offer charm, central location, and local flavor.
Quick Tips for Choosing What’s Right for Your Family
- Younger kids or ski lessons? Stay in Mountain Village so your commute to lesson check-ins, lifts, and ski school is minimal.
- Want walkability, restaurants, local charm? Pick a town property and use the free gondola to get up the mountain.
- Need space and flexibility? Look for condos, residences, or suites with kitchens and laundry.
- Desire resort amenities? Spas, kids’ programs, pools, game rooms — check that the property offers them.
- Balance budget vs luxury? There’s a spectrum: from boutique inns in town to ultra-luxury resorts in the village.
