Thor 30.2 Ace Motorhome – Our New RV

The exterior of our Thor 30.2 Ace

Prior to purchasing our Thor 30.2 Ace motorhome, my husband and I had been tent campers our whole lives. When I was a child, my family actually bought a motorhome, but it was a punishment for us kids to have to sleep in it. We all had our tents and we loved sleeping in them, so we only slept in the motorhome if it was raining or if we got in trouble.

I still genuinely enjoy tent camping. There’s something special about sleeping in a tent. But there’s obviously a ton of prep work, packing and loading that goes along with tent camping. After 11 years of tent camping with our kids, we finally decided to give in and get an RV.

Prior to the RV, this is how we loaded up

When we decided to get an RV, I was really pushing to get a trailer. They’re a lot cheaper, and I like the idea of being able to disconnect and still have a vehicle to drive around. But with years of experience driving a fire engine, my husband felt a lot more comfortable driving (and parking) an RV.

There are so many choices when it comes to RVs. We looked at both Class As and Class Cs. All we really knew was that we wanted something between 27-31 feet so we could still fit in national parks, and ideally we’d have a slide-out or two for extra interior space.

How We Decided on the Thor Ace 30.2

When we first started looking, we went to an RV show so we could compare the floor plans and features of different makes and models. We knew we’d be buying a used RV, but this was a good way to see a lot of RVs at once to compare. That’s when we first noticed the Thor 30.2 Ace.

After we saw a lot of options, we put together a list of “nice to haves” and “need to haves.” I liked the idea of an outdoor TV because we often camp on MLK weekend, and there are NFL playoff games to watch that weekend. We also liked the outdoor kitchen. However, when it came to choosing between that and storage, it made more sense for us to choose storage.

One thing my husband really liked the idea of was automatic leveling. This is way more common on Class As, so that sort of sent us more in that direction.

Another feature my husband really wanted was bunk beds. This limited us a ton, especially with class As. But the Thor 30.2 Ace has bunk beds, an overheard bunk that comes down over the driver seat, and automatic leveling. And it has one large “super slide”, giving a lot more interior space. So it checked all our boxes.

Finding the Perfect Fit For Us

Once we knew we definitely wanted the Thor Ace 30.2, we set up searches on RVTrader. That way, we received notifications anytime something hit the market that matched our search criteria. We searched anywhere in the United States because we figured my husband could fly out and drive the rig home. But we ultimately bought one that was just over an hour away, so that made it easy on us.

So far we’re really happy with the Thor 30.2 Ace. We bought a used 2015, but it had low miles and was very clean and well cared for. We really like that there’s enough sleeping space for all of us without having to convert the bed and couch back and forth each day. It has a good amount of storage as well and even has the outdoor TV I wanted. I can’t wait to make many great memories in it throughout the years.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
