Things to do in Princeville: Top 11

A look at the best things to do in Princeville Kauai

The Best Things to Do in Princeville, Kauai

Kauai is probably my favorite of the Hawaiian Islands, but particularly the north side of the island. This is where Princeville is located, and where you’ll find breathtaking views, lush landscapes, and laid-back luxury. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a beach lover, or someone looking to relax and enjoy world-class dining, Princeville has plenty to do. We spent a several days exploring the Princeville area during our recent Kauai family vacation, and we couldn’t get enough. Here’s a guide to the best things to do while visiting this tropical paradise.

1. Explore Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay is one of the best things to do in Princeville

While not technically in Princeville, nearby Hanalei Bay is a must-visit. This picturesque bay, surrounded by green mountains, offers incredible opportunities for swimming, paddleboarding, and surfing. You can rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the Hanalei River or simply relax on the sandy shores while taking in the view.

My kids had so much fun jumping in from the pier in Hanalei Bay. We even spotted a puffer fish while standing on the pier and looking into the water. There are also some food and shave ice places nearby, making it easy to spend the day here.

Best for: Beach lovers, water activities, families.

2. Golf at the Princeville Makai Golf Club

If you’re a golf enthusiast, the Princeville Makai Golf Club is one of the most scenic courses in Hawaii. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this award-winning golf course offers incredible ocean views and a challenging but enjoyable round of golf. Even if you don’t golf, you can book a sunset golf cart tour to take in the spectacular scenery.

Best for: Golfers, scenic views, photography.

3. Visit Queen’s Bath– One of the best things to do in Princeville during summer months

A natural tide pool surrounded by lava rock, Queen’s Bath is a popular yet somewhat dangerous attraction. During the summer months, when the surf is calm, it’s a great place to take a dip in the crystal-clear water. However, during the winter months, the waves can be treacherous, so always check the conditions before going.

When we stayed in Princeville, we also had a lot of fun hiking Ho’opi’i Falls and Makaleha Falls. While these aren’t hikes in Princeville, they’re not too far away and are a great option to consider.

Best for: Adventurous travelers, experienced swimmers.

4. Take a Hike on the Okolehao Trail

For those who love hiking, the Okolehao Trail offers breathtaking views of Hanalei Bay and the surrounding mountains. The trail is moderately challenging and can be muddy after rain, but the panoramic views at the top are well worth the effort. Check out other family-friendly hikes in Kauai.

Best for: Hikers, nature lovers, photographers.

5. Relax at Hideaway Beach

Hideaways Beach is one of the best things to do in Princeville

If you’re looking for a more secluded beach experience, Hideaway Beach is a hidden gem in Princeville. It requires a short but steep hike down to the shore, but once you arrive, you’ll find a pristine, uncrowded beach with excellent snorkeling and calm waters. Not far from here, we discovered some great tide pools that are just in front of the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (which by the way, is a gorgeous resort! Read my review of it here). Definitely worth a visit during low tide.

Best for: Snorkeling, relaxing, avoiding crowds.

6. Visit the Maniniholo Dry Cave

Visiting the Maniniholo Dry Cave is one of the many things to do in Princeville Kauai

Located near Haena State Park, the Maniniholo Dry Cave is an intriguing natural formation with a fascinating history. The cave is easy to access and provides a fun and quick stop to explore while on your way to other North Shore attractions and beaches. Kids will love wandering through the cave, and the cool interior offers a refreshing break from the sun.

Best for: Families, adventure seekers, photography.

7. Indulge in a Spa Day– One of the most relaxing things to do in Princeville

For ultimate relaxation, consider booking a spa treatment at The Spa at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (formerly the Princeville Resort). Enjoy a rejuvenating massage or facial while overlooking the ocean, letting the island vibes wash over you.

Best for: Relaxation, wellness, luxury travelers.

8. Enjoy Local Dining

There are some great dining options in Princeville, from casual cafes to upscale restaurants. Some must-visit spots include:

  • Tiki Iniki – A fun, tiki-themed bar and restaurant with tropical cocktails and Hawaiian-inspired dishes.
  • The Spot – A great choice for acai bowls, smoothies, and coffee.
  • Nanea Restaurant & Bar – Located at the Westin Princeville, this spot offers farm-to-table dining with Hawaiian flavors.

Best for: Foodies, casual and fine dining.

9. Take a Helicopter Tour

One of the best ways to truly appreciate Kauai’s beauty is by taking a helicopter tour. Departing from Princeville Airport, these tours offer an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the island’s dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and untouched valleys.

Best for: Adventure seekers, photography lovers, sightseeing.

10. Visit Anini Beach

Anini Beach in Princeville Kauai

Located just outside Princeville, Anini Beach is one of the safest beaches on the North Shore due to its protective reef. In fact, it tops my list of the best beaches for kids in Kauai. It’s also a great spot for snorkeling, paddleboarding, or just enjoying a peaceful day by the ocean.

Best for: Families, snorkeling, relaxing.

11. Watch the Sunset at the Princeville Lookout

End your day by taking in the breathtaking sunset from Princeville Lookout, located near the Princeville Shopping Center. It offers panoramic views of Hanalei Bay and the surrounding cliffs, making it a perfect spot to reflect on your day in paradise.

Best for: Romantic moments, photography, relaxation.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
