Ski Trip Packing Checklist

I think it’s way easier to pack for a summer getaway than for a ski trip. There’s so much gear you need to remember to pack when heading out to cold weather. But that’s why I’m putting together this ski trip packing checklist. I’ve included everything you need so you won’t forget a thing.
One of our favorite family traditions is heading up to Big Bear every year over the long President’s Day weekend in February (check out my favorite Big Bear Airbnbs). When the kids were younger, we’d simply load up some warm clothes and sleds, and they’d have fun in the backyard (if there was snow on the ground). There are plenty of fun things to do in Big Bear without ever heading to the ski resorts.

Now that the kids are older, they want to hit the slopes as well. Because they grow so quickly and we only make it to the slopes once a year, we just rent snowboard gear for the kids when we’re up there. But even still, there’s a lot to we need to remember to pack in order to keep everyone comfortable. I created this ski trip packing checklist as I packed for our own family ski trip.
Just a heads up–I didn’t include all of your normal packing attire and toiletries (you know, bring enough underwear for each day, and don’t forget your pajamas). But when we’re on a snow trip, we pretty much just lounge around in sweats all day unless we’re heading out to play in the snow. If you plan on going out to eat, you might want to bring some real clothes.

Skiing and snowboarding are expensive hobbies, especially for families. If you’re looking to save a bit of money, check out this list of ski resorts that offer free lift tickets for kids. Brian Head is one of the ski resorts where kids ski free. We just visited for the first time and loved it! Here’s information about the Brian Head Lodge, where we stayed.

Ski Trip Packing Checklist: What You Need For the Slopes

- Thermal underwear – I wear these under my snow pants and jacket. If it’s really cold, I wear another shirt or sweatshirt over the thermal top.
- Snow jacket – Choose something waterproof. I have one with a fur-lined interior like this one, and it’s some warm and comfortable
- Snow pants – again, choose something waterproof. I also like snow bibs for my kids.
- Wool socks – so important for keeping your feet warm
- Snow gloves or mittens – make sure they are waterproof! I like mittens for the kids because they’re easier for them to put on themselves. But I prefer gloves for myself.
- Beanie/ scarf/ gaiter/ ear muffs — all the extras to keep you warm
- Warm boots – I wear my UGG boots until I change into my snowboarding boots
- Any ski or snowboard gear that you own and need to bring, unless you plan to rent (googles, helmet, boots, skis or snowboard)
What to Pack for Sledding

- Everything from the above list, except the bottom two items
- Snow boots – so important for keeping your feet dry
- Sleds – I like the discs and the foam sleds the best. They seem to be the most durable.
Ski Trip Packing Checklist: House Wear & Extras
- Handwarmers – I love the rechargeable handwarmers!
- A comfortable sweat suit for lounging around inside
- Slippers
