Exploring Mammoth Mountain Village: The Ultimate Year-Round Getaway

Before having kids, my husband and I would head up to Mammoth Mountain (from San Diego) at least 3-4 times a year. We spent many New Year’s Eves at the ski resort, and just as many summer days exploring the trails and lakes. Now that we have kids, it’s a bit harder to get up there as much, not to mention, a lot more expensive to hit the slopes. But a family vacation at the village at Mammoth Mountain is a dreamy escape with plenty to offer.

If you’re longing for a mountain trip that blends adventure, cozy lodging, and a lively village atmosphere, Mammoth Mountain Village is one of California’s best destinations. Whether you visit in winter for world-class skiing or in summer for scenic hikes and alpine lakes, “The Village” is the heart of it all. It offers everything from great food to fun après-ski vibes.

One of the best parts of staying near Mammoth’s main village is that you can ditch your car for most of your trip. Everything is super accessible from the village. Want to hit the slopes? The Village Gondola whisks you over to the lifts in the winter. And in the warmer months, trailheads, shops, and restaurants are all steps away.

The Westin Monache Resort – If you want luxury and convenience, this is the spot. The Westin overlooks the village plaza, offering modern mountain-style suites with kitchenettes and fireplaces. You can relax in the heated outdoor pool or soak in one of the hot tubs after a long day on the mountain.

The Village Lodge – A family favorite, The Village Lodge puts you right in the center of everything. You’ll have condo-style rooms, access to multiple pools and hot tubs, and an easy walk to restaurants, shops, and the gondola.

The Alpenhof Lodge – Just across from the main village, this charming alpine-style lodge has cozy rooms, a welcoming vibe, and an on-site restaurant and bar (Petra’s Wine Bar). It’s perfect if you want a more traditional mountain lodge feel with quick access to the action.

Coffee is a must for me, and I love trying all the local spots when traveling. Start your mountain mornings off right with one of these favorites:

Mammoth Coffee Roasting Company – Known for their smooth espresso and mountain-chic vibe. It’s a cozy spot to fuel up before hitting the slopes.

Side Door Wine Bar & Café – Tucked into The Village, it’s a perfect stop for coffee, crepes, or light breakfast bites. Later in the day, it doubles as a wine bar—so you may find yourself back here come evening.

Stellar Brew & Natural Café – A few minutes from the village, this beloved local spot offers organic coffee, fresh smoothies, and hearty breakfast burritos that hit the spot before a big day outdoors.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
