Planning a trip to Nashville? One of the first big decisions you’ll need to make is where to stay. Music City has so many distinct neighborhoods, each with its own vibe, perks, and personality. Whether you’re here for the honky-tonks, the history, or just some good Southern food, your home base can shape your whole trip. But choosing the best areas to stay in Nashville really depends on what you’re wanting from your visit.

When I was planning the trip for my 40th birthday, someone warned me that the downtown area is very loud. She said if I didn’t want to hear music and people throwing up all night, then to choose one of the other great areas to stay in Nashville.

Based on that recommendation, we ended up staying in the Gulch neighborhood and we absolutely loved it. But I can also see the perks of staying in Downtown Nashville and being super close to everything. P.S– I had to much fun celebrating my 40th there. I can see why it’s one of the best cities to visit for your 40th birthday.

If this is your first trip to Nashville, staying downtown puts you right in the middle of it all. You’ll be within walking distance of Broadway’s famous honky-tonks, the Ryman Auditorium, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

• Walk everywhere—no car needed for the main attractions
• Buzzing nightlife and live music at every corner
• Perfect for first-timers who want the “classic” Nashville experience

Family-Friendly Tip: Downtown is busy, but families can easily walk to Riverfront Park, the Tennessee State Museum (which is free), and the Country Music Hall of Fame, which has interactive exhibits kids enjoy.

Just south of downtown, The Gulch has become one of Nashville’s hippest neighborhoods, known for its boutique shopping, trendy restaurants, and high-rise hotels. It’s quieter than downtown but still walkable to attractions.

For my 40th birthday trip (check out that itinerary here!), we wanted to stay a bit removed from the noise and crowds of Downtown. So we chose to stay in The Gulch neighborhood, and it was perfect for what we were looking for.

• Walkable to downtown (about 15–20 minutes)

• Upscale, stylish vibe

Family-Friendly Tip: The Gulch is great if you want a little more peace than Broadway offers. Kids will love seeing the “Wings” mural, and there are plenty of family-friendly eateries nearby.

• Thompson Nashville – Modern rooms with space for families, plus a rooftop bar for parents’ night. This is where I stayed for my 40th, and we loved it! It felt very luxurious and central to what we wanted to see and do.

• Fairfield Inn & Suites The Gulch – Reliable and affordable with free breakfast.

Midtown: For Nightlife Beyond Broadway

Midtown is one of the best areas to stay in Nashville if you’re looking for a lively scene, but without the huge crowds. The Midtown area is more local than Broadway, with plenty of restaurants and a college-town vibe thanks to Vanderbilt University. Plus, it’s home to Centennial Park and the Parthenon replica—two fun family stops.

East Nashville is full of character, with craft breweries, eclectic restaurants, and a strong artsy vibe. It’s more local and laid-back, but you’ll need a car or rideshare to get downtown.

Family-Friendly Tip: Families will appreciate the calmer streets here compared to downtown. It’s walkable to some attractions but not as hectic—perfect for those with younger kids.
