Campfire Games for Adults & Families

Best Campfire Games for Adults: Fun and Laughter Under the Stars
A campfire isn’t just a place to keep warm or roast marshmallows—it’s also the perfect setting for laughter, connection, and a little friendly competition. Whether you’re camping with friends or family, adding games to your evening campfire routine can elevate the experience. I’ve compiled a list of campfire games for adults and families to enjoy. Most of these campfire games are great for all ages, but some can be altered a bit for more adult-humor, depending on what you’re going for.
While this post specifically focuses on campfire games for adults, you can also check out my other posts about our favorite camping games, things to do while camping and the best beach games for even more fun ideas.

Here’s a list of the best campfire games for adults and families, guaranteed to create unforgettable memories under the night sky.
1. Two Truths and a Lie
This classic game is perfect for groups who want to learn more about each other while sharing some laughs.
- How to Play: Each person takes turns sharing three statements about themselves. Two are true, and one is a lie. The group guesses which statement is the lie.
- Why It’s Fun: It’s a great way to discover fun and surprising facts about your fellow campers. Expect some hilarious and outrageous “lies” that might just sound believable.
2. Killer at the Campfire
A game of mystery and strategy that thrives in a group setting.
- How to Play: Everyone sits in a circle around the campfire. Choose one person to send away–that person will be the guesser. Once they leave, choose one person in the circle to be the killer. That person will “kill” people by winking at them. Call the guesser back to the campfire, and they will stand in the center of the circle, observing others. Meanwhile, the killer is winking at people and killing them (when you’re killed, you can just close your eyes and slump down). The point is for the killer to kill as many people as possible without the guesser catching them. The guesser has 3 guesses to figure out who the killer is, before everyone is killed.
- Why It’s Fun: Trying to be inconspicuous to kill others without getting caught is always a challenge. This one is great in large groups, and all ages can participate.
3. Catch Phrase
This is one of my all-time favorite campfire games for adults. It can be played with any number of players, and you can organize teams however you see fit. The kids also love to play, but sometimes they’re better just being guessers.
- How to Play: Sit in a circle. We try to alternate boys and girls so that there can be a boy team vs a girl team, but you can also break teams up by family or however else you’d like. Catch Phrase is basically a hot potato game, but you need to describe a word to try to get people to guess the word. For example, if the word on the screen is “winter”, you can say the season that Christmas is in. Once your team guesses, you pass the device to the left and it keeps going until the time is up. Whichever team is holding it when the timer goes off loses that round.
- Why It’s Fun: This game always creates fun campfire competition. And the pressure to describe the word quickly can create lots of laughs.
4. Would You Rather
A simple but thought-provoking game that sparks lively conversations.
- How to Play: Take turns asking each other questions starting with “Would you rather…” (e.g., “Would you rather hike up a volcano or dive into a coral reef?”). Participants must choose one option and explain why.
- Why It’s Fun: This game often leads to debates, laughter, and surprising revelations about people’s preferences.
5. Campfire Charades
A twist on the classic charades game, perfect for a cozy outdoor setting.
- How to Play: Write down various actions, movie titles, or phrases on slips of paper and place them in a hat. Players take turns acting them out without speaking while others guess.
- Why It’s Fun: The lack of props and the flickering firelight add a fun challenge to the game, often resulting in exaggerated (and hilarious) pantomimes.
6. Taboo
A game of describing and guessing.
- How to Play: Sit around the campfire, but divide yourselves into two teams. It doesn’t matter where you are sitting. One person holds the game and has a word they are trying to describe. Their team is in charge of guessing the word. The object is to get their team to guess as many words as possible before the timer runs out. Someone from the opposite team stands behind the speaker with a buzzer because there are also words the speaker isn’t allowed to say. If the person gets buzzed, they have to skip that word and move on to the next.
- Why It’s Fun: You have to get creative in describing the word without using any of the buzz words. This one can be played with any number of players, and the teams always tend to get very competitive with one another.
7. Story Chain
A collaborative and creative storytelling game.
- How to Play: One person starts a story with a single sentence, and each subsequent person adds a sentence to continue the tale. The goal is to keep the story going without breaking the flow.
- Why It’s Fun: The story can go in unexpected and amusing directions, especially as everyone tries to outdo each other with creative twists.
8. Name That Tune
For music lovers, this game is a surefire hit.
- How to Play: One person hums or whistles a tune, and the others try to guess the song. Alternatively, use a Bluetooth speaker to play snippets of songs.
- Why It’s Fun: It’s a nostalgic game that gets everyone singing along and reminiscing about their favorite tunes.
9. Never Have I Ever
A campfire classic that combines fun and storytelling.
- How to Play: Each person takes turns saying “Never have I ever…” followed by something they haven’t done. Those who have done it must take a sip of their drink (or hold up a finger).
- Why It’s Fun: This game often leads to hilarious confessions and shared experiences.
10. 20 Questions
A game of deduction that’s simple to play but endlessly entertaining.
- How to Play: One person thinks of an object, person, or place, and the others have 20 yes-or-no questions to figure it out.
- Why It’s Fun: It’s a brain teaser that can lead to clever questions and surprising answers.
