Cooking Supplies for Camping

When heading out on a camping trip, you need to make sure you have everything you need. One strategy I use to make my life easier is putting all of my cooking supplies for camping in a storage container–or at least those that fit. This way, I can just load up the entire box, knowing that everything is packed and ready to go. I make sure to restock it after each trip.
If you’re just starting off camping, I highly suggest you consider doing the same and creating a camping kitchen of sorts. But first, you need to know exactly what cooking supplies for camping you need. Also be sure to check out my complete camping gear checklist to see what else you might need.
Cooking Supplies for Your Camping Kitchen
1. Cooking Equipment

- Camping Stove or Grill: A portable camping stove or grill is crucial for cooking, unless you’re planning to cook over a campfire. There are a variety of types to choose from–we use a grill that’s separate from our camping stove, but they also make combo grill and stove units that are great for those just starting out or looking to save space.
- Fuel: Most camping stoves and grills are powered by propane, so make sure you have plenty on hand.
- Lighter or Matches: You’ll need a lighter or matches to start your stove or campfire.
- Cookware: A basic set of lightweight, non-stick pots and pans. Consider a pot, a frying pan, and a kettle if you’ll be boiling water. Also, if you plan to make one pot dishes for camping, make sure you have a big enough pot.
- Cooking Utensils: Spatula, tongs, ladle, and a large spoon for stirring and serving. This set includes everything you might need, including a cutting board, which is next on this list.
- Cutting Board and Knife: A compact cutting board and a sharp knife for preparing ingredients.
- Random Extras: A strainer, a can opener
2. Cooking Supplies for Camping:Eating and Serving Supplies

- Plates, Bowls, and Cups: You can choose to use paper plates and plastic utensils, however, we have a dinnerware set that’s great for us. We ordered a few extra plates and silverware settings, since we have 5 in our family.
- Cutlery: Forks, knives, and spoons (or sporks), if they don’t come in your dinnerware set. You don’t need anything special for camping, so a basic silverware set works just fine.
- Mugs: For hot drinks like coffee or tea. Something basic or something that’s designed to keep your coffee at temperature for longer like a Stanley mug.
- Reusable Food Containers: For storing leftovers or packing food. We also always have Ziploc bags on hand.
3. Cleaning Supplies
- Dish Tub & Soap: For washing dishes and utensils. A dish tub makes doing dishes much easier.
- Sponge or Scrubber: For cleaning your cookware and utensils.
- Dish Towels or Paper Towels: For drying dishes and wiping surfaces.
- Trash Bags: To keep your campsite clean and pack out your trash.

4. Food Storage and Prep
- Cooler and Ice Packs: To keep perishable foods fresh. I have a whole list of recommended ice chests/ coolers here, although a basic ice chest to get started is fine too. Make sure you check out my tips on making your ice last longer.
- Food Storage Bags or Containers: For organizing ingredients and leftovers.
- Aluminum Foil: Useful for wrapping food or cooking over the fire.
- Ziplock Bags: For snacks, marinating, or organizing small items.
5. Miscellaneous

- Pot Holders or Gloves: For handling hot cookware.
- Campfire Grate: If you plan to cook directly over a fire.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons: If you’re following specific recipes.
- S’mores Sticks: For roasting s’mores around a campfire.
These supplies should cover most of your cooking needs while camping. Depending on your specific meals and personal preferences, you might need additional items, but this list will provide a solid foundation for a well-equipped camping kitchen.
