Free Overnight Parking Options for RVs

I’m not a full-time RV’er, so I’m still learning the ins and outs of camping in an RV. Up until two years ago, we were avid tent campers. If we needed to break up a long commute, we could book a hotel and not stress much about it. Now booking a hotel when traveling in an RV feels a bit redundant. And RV parks can be pricey or at capacity. But I have learned that there are numerous options for free overnight parking when commuting between campgrounds.
Walmart was the most common place recommended to use when we were looking for free overnight parking options on our long drive to Bass Lake. But we quickly discovered that many Walmarts no longer offer this option–especially in California.
We planned ahead and found a casino that said we could stay the night. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told we could not stay because we had our kids with us. We found ourselves in a bit of a bind.
Luckily, I had just seen someone who had posted about staying the night at a Bass Pro. I did a quick Google search and found out that Bass Pro and Cracker Barrel restaurants are two places that often allow overnight parking. We found a nearby Cracker Barrel, made a phone call and were on our way. Click to read more about that interesting experience.
I’ve decided to compile a list of places that often allow free overnight parking, in case any of you ever find yourself in a bind or need an easy and free option for a long trip. It’s crucial to note that policies can vary by location, and it’s always best to confirm with the specific establishment before parking overnight.
Places That May Offer Free Overnight Parking

- Walmart: Many Walmart stores across the United States have been known to allow free overnight RV parking. However, policies may vary by store, and some locations may have restrictions or time limits. It’s best to check with the store manager or look for posted signs indicating whether overnight parking is permitted.
- Cracker Barrel: Some Cracker Barrel locations allow overnight RV parking in their large parking lots. However, this is not a universal policy, so it’s essential to verify with the individual restaurant before staying overnight.
- Cabela’s/Bass Pro Shops: These outdoor retailers sometimes allow overnight RV parking in their parking lots. As with other businesses, it’s wise to inquire with the store management and adhere to any posted guidelines.
- Rest Areas: While not stores or restaurants, rest areas along highways often allow overnight parking for RVs. Regulations may vary by state, so it’s essential to check the rules for each specific rest area.
- Truck Stops: Some truck stops, such as Pilot Flying J, TA Travel Centers, and Love’s Travel Stops, may permit free overnight RV parking. Again, policies can differ by location, so it’s best to confirm with the individual establishment.
- Casinos: Certain casinos with ample parking space may allow overnight RV parking. Always check with the casino’s security or guest services. Overnight parking might not be allowed or there might be restrictions. If you are traveling with kids, be sure to ask specifically about rules that may pertain to minors.

Final Thoughts
Even if overnight parking is allowed at these locations, it’s essential to practice good etiquette. Respect any posted rules or time limits, and get permission from the appropriate authorities when necessary.
