My friend and I have been having an ongoing debate for years when it comes to Kauai. I personally love the North side of the island because of the lush green backdrops that are absolutely beautiful. But she loves Poipu because it’s on the sunny side of the island and because there are so many things to do in Poipu, which makes it easy.

I have to admit, sometimes ease and convenience trumps views. Especially when traveling with kids, which we often are.

No matter where you end up staying, Poipu needs to be on at least one day of your Kauai itinerary. This little slice of paradise is famous for its golden beaches, laid-back vibes, and incredible food scene. But beyond lounging in the sand, there really are so many things to do in Poipu. Here’s a look.

Hit the Beaches – One of the best things to do in Poipu

Let’s start with the obvious. Poipu is known for some of the island’s best beaches. Poipu Beach Park is probably the most famous, and for good reason—it’s a natural playground with calm lagoons for swimming, a small surf break for beginners, and even a chance to spot Hawaiian monk seals sunbathing. We saw several, along with sea turtles! If you’re into snorkeling, you’ll find colorful fish right off the shore here.

For something a little more off the beaten path, head to Mahaulepu Beach, just a short drive from town. It’s quieter, with rugged cliffs and tidepools that make it a beautiful spot for a morning walk.

Explore Scenic Trails

If you’re ready to stretch your legs, check out the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. This coastal hike starts near the Grand Hyatt Kauai and follows the shoreline for a few miles, with sweeping ocean views, limestone cliffs, and chances to spot sea turtles or even humpback whales in winter. It’s not too strenuous, so it’s a great choice for a sunrise or late afternoon stroll.

Visit the Spouting Horn

One of the most unique things to do in Poipu is a stop at the Spouting Horn blowhole. Here, waves rush into a lava tube and shoot high into the air—sometimes as tall as 50 feet! The natural spray is dramatic and mesmerizing, and kids especially love the sound it makes. Legend says it’s the trapped breath of a giant lizard that once guarded the coast. It’s also one of the best photo ops on Kauai, especially at sunset.

Foodies will be happy to know Poipu has plenty of flavors to try. Grab a poke bowl from Koloa Fish Market, stop for a casual plate lunch at Da Crack, or treat yourself to fresh island cuisine at Merriman’s Fish House or Beach House Restaurant (which also has killer sunset views). If you do end up staying in Poipu, make sure to spend a day venturing to the north side of the island. There’s plenty to do on that side as well, and the views are unbeatable. It almost feels like two different islands.
