1 Day in Yosemite Itinerary

A Perfect Itinerary for 1 Day in Yosemite National Park
It seems like it’s been getting harder and harder to get reservations at any of the campgrounds in Yosemite. We used to have good luck, and would be able to spend about 5 days camping in the park. Even that somehow didn’t feel like enough time.
There are lots of other campground and hotel options outside of Yosemite, but the drive in and out of the park can be pretty long. Lucky for you, I’ve created this itinerary for those only able to spend 1 day in Yosemite. While you won’t be able to see everything, you can still experience some of the park’s most iconic sights and breathtaking landscapes.
This itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your time, whether you’re visiting for the first time or making a quick return trip.
Morning: Sunrise at Tunnel View & Yosemite Valley Highlights

6:30 AM – Catch the Sunrise at Tunnel View
Start your day with one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Yosemite—Tunnel View. This iconic spot offers a panoramic vista of El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall, especially stunning in the early morning light. You drive past this point on your way into the valley, so long as you enter the national park from the west entrance.
7:00 AM – Head to Yosemite Valleyto Start Your 1 Day in Yosemite
After taking in the views, drive into Yosemite Valley, the heart of the park. This area is home to some of Yosemite’s most famous landmarks, and early morning is the best time to explore before the crowds arrive.
7:30 AM – Breakfast at Degnan’s Kitchen
Before hitting the trails, grab a quick breakfast and coffee at Degnan’s Kitchen in Yosemite Village. They offer grab-and-go items perfect for fueling your adventure.
8:00 AM – Hike to Lower Yosemite Falls

Take an easy, family-friendly 1-mile loop to the base of Lower Yosemite Falls. This short hike offers an up-close view of one of North America’s tallest waterfalls. It’s one of my favorite kid-friendly hikes in Yosemite.
9:00 AM – Explore Sentinel Meadow & Yosemite Chapel

Drive or walk over to Sentinel Meadow for stunning views of Yosemite Falls and El Capitan. Stop by the historic Yosemite Chapel, the oldest standing structure in the valley.
1 Day in Yosemite – Midday: El Capitan & Glacier Point
10:00 AM – El Capitan Viewpoint
Continue your adventure with a stop at El Capitan Meadow, where you can admire rock climbers tackling the famous granite monolith. If you have binoculars, you might even spot climbers scaling the massive rock face.
11:00 AM – Drive Up to Glacier Point (Closed in winter)

Head up Glacier Point Road for some of the best panoramic views in the park. The drive takes about 45 minutes, but the incredible vista overlooking Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Nevada Falls is well worth it. Note: If you take the shuttle up to Glacier, you can hike the Panorama Trail down, which is one of the best hikes in Yosemite. This is a long hike, and will take up several hours of your 1 day in Yosemite. However, it’s a great way to see the Mist Trail and multiple waterfalls. You’d likely need to skip the Mariposa Grove trip though to make up the time.
12:00 PM – Picnic Lunch at Glacier Point
Bring a packed lunch and enjoy a scenic picnic at Glacier Point. There’s nothing like dining with one of the most famous views in the country.
Afternoon: Giant Sequoias & Scenic Drives
1:00 PM – Head to Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias
Drive to Mariposa Grove, home to some of the largest and oldest trees on Earth. Take the short Big Trees Loop Trail to see massive sequoias like the Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree.
3:00 PM – Drive Along Tioga Road (Seasonal Option)
If you’re spending 1 day in Yosemite during the late spring through early fall, consider taking a scenic drive along Tioga Road, which offers breathtaking alpine views and serene lakes. This road will be closed once snow starts falling, and won’t open back up until late spring.
4:30 PM – Return to Yosemite Valley for Dinner
Head back down to Yosemite Valley and enjoy dinner at the Yosemite Valley Lodge’s Mountain Room Restaurant, which offers great views and a relaxing atmosphere.
1 Day in Yosemite – Evening: Sunset & Stargazing
6:30 PM – Sunset at Valley View

Before leaving the park, stop at Valley View for one last stunning look at the Merced River reflecting El Capitan and Cathedral Rocks.
7:30 PM – Stargazing at Tunnel View or Glacier Point
If you’re staying past sunset, Yosemite’s dark skies make for some of the best stargazing. Tunnel View and Glacier Point are fantastic spots to take in the stars before heading home.
