Explore Pioneertown: A Wild West Adventure Near Joshua Tree

Did you know that there is an adorable old-timey town just outside of Joshua Tree? Pioneertown Joshua Tree is located in Yucca Valley, just a stone’s throw from the national park and is an easy drive from Palm Springs.

From Joshua Tree, it’s about a 20-minute drive to Pioneertown and from Palm Desert, it’s about 50 minutes.

When I first heard about this little town, I couldn’t wait to bust out my best wild wild west clothing and head on over for some cute photo ops, delicious food and a Wild West gun fight.

What is Pioneertown Joshua Tree?

Pioneertown is a 1880’s themed town that was designed as a film set in 1946. While it’s no longer used as a film set, it’s still set up for fun photo ops, plus there are a number of stores and restaurants you can visit.

What is There to do in Pioneertown?

There are multiple stores in Pioneertown. We enjoyed walking through some of the secondhand clothing boutiques, filled of a range of styles. There was also an apothecary that carried soaps and lotions, and a higher-end boutique.

On Saturdays, you can even catch a Wild West show, full of jokes and gun fights. The Mane Street Stampede performs on the second and fourth Saturday of the cooler months (Nov-May, weather permitting). Gunfighters for Hire performs on the first and third Saturdays of the month (Nov-May, weather permitting). Shows are completely free, and were fun (albeit a little cheesy) for the whole family. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it.

We visited Pioneertown Joshua Tree on a weekend that was probably busier than usual due to a music festival. But because of that, there was a lot going on and everything was open. Some of the actors from the gun show were walking around and teaching the kids to lasso.

We also got to meet (and kiss!) the mayor of Pioneertown, Sam.

There is an old bowling alley in Pioneertown (the wild west performances are directly in front of it). We were so lucky to get to peak in there. I even heard some chatter about possible reopening to the public someday?? I’m not sure if there is truth behind that, but it was super cool to get to see.

Restaurants in Pioneertown Joshua Tree

There are two restaurants in Pioneertown. The most popular is Pappy and Harriet’s. It has an amazing menu with a great outdoor space and live music on weekends. They were holding a 3-day music festival when we last visited, and were closed to the public–super bummer because I was dreaming of their chili nachos! It is definitely the place to be, and people from Joshua Tree drive over just to dine here.

If you have your heart set on eating at Pappy and Harriet’s, I highly recommend you put your name in early and then enjoy walking around Pioneertown while you wait to be seated.

The second option is the Red Dog Saloon. We grabbed drinks here on our last visit and enjoyed sitting in the sunshine, sipping on our cocktails. They have a large outdoor space here as well.

Believe it or not, there are a number of places to stay right in Pioneertown. We were only visiting Pioneertown for the day, so we chose to stay in a fun resort in Palm Springs.

The Pioneertown Motel is located right in the heart of Pioneertown and just steps away from Pappy & Harriet’s. It’s one of the best hotels near Joshua Tree.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
