Best Credit Cards For Families: The Capital One Venture X

The Venture X is one of the best credit cards for families

When it comes to traveling with a family, one of the easiest ways to save money is to use credit card points for a portion (or all, if you’re lucky) of the cost. One question I’ve been asked repeatedly is what is the best credit cards for families? Specifically in regards to travel and earning rewards.

I have always been a fan of the Chase Sapphire Credit Card, so I really had no reason to explore other travel cards. I felt that if I was going to get the most bang for my buck, I needed to commit to one card to use so we could earn the most points towards travel.

However, I’ve just recently decided to explore the world of travel hacking a bit. You get the most out of travel credit cards when you get the new-card holder incentives and bonuses. So I decided it was time to try a new card and get some bonus points.

After doing a lot of research on the various card options and learning about thew reward options, I decided to open the Capital One Venture X credit card. This is one of the best credit cards for families because it has so many options when it comes to redeeming your reward miles.

Venture vs Venture X Credit Cards — Two of the best credit cards for families

I debated a lot between the Venture and the Venture X, but ultimately decided that the $395 fee will pay for itself. The Venture X annual fee is $395 vs $95 for the Venture, however, right off the bat, you get a $300 travel credit from the Venture X, so it’s a wash. On top of that, you get 10,000 anniversary points every year ($100 value) and unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests to airport lounges.

The complimentary lounge access is a huge perk that made these benefits stand out when I was really considering which cards are the best credit cards for families. This is something that can save my family a lot of money when we’re hanging out at the airport.

Airport lounges provide snacks and meals along with beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), so it can save you a lot of money, and make layovers a lot more comfortable. In fact, getting access to an airport lounge is my biggest tip when it comes to flying with kids.

Additional Benefits

Since opening the credit card, I have learned even more things that I love about the Venture X card that I had no idea about and that makes it even higher on my list of the best credit cards for families.

Instant Access to Points

At the top of the list is that the reward points are available to use right away. Meaning you don’t need to wait until the next billing cycle. I spent $120 yesterday to fill up my gas tank (I know, disgusting) and those points were available by today for me to use. That is a HUGE perk, and is something that sets this card apart from some of the others on this list of best credit card for families.

That means that if you are booking a trip, you can book your flights, then use those points you earned booking those flights toward your hotel or rental car, all on the same trip without booking months apart.

I also love the ease of searching for flights on the Capital One travel website. It offers a lot more options than the Chase travel portal, and it’s easy to mix and match airlines for the best prices.

The Capital One Venture X is one of the best credit cards for families because of the travel perks.

Flight Price Guarantee

Another great perk I was unaware of is that when you book a flight through the Capital One travel website, you can get up to $50 back per ticket if the price drops within 10 days of you purchasing. That’s huge! The way this works is that if Capital One says “The price is low, you should book,” it’s automatically guaranteed if you do take their advice and book. There is nothing more you need to do.

Cell Phone Insurance – A Perk With Some of the Best Credit Cards for Families

If you use the Capital One Venture X card to pay your cell phone bill, your phone is automatically protected against theft and damage for the next calendar month–up to $800 a year! And you can submit two claims per year, so up to $1600 a year in protection, simply for using your card to pay your bill.

I just started using this card and exploring the travel perks, so I’m sure I’ll have even more to share as I learn more about it. But for now, it is definitely earning its Number 1 spot on my list of best credit cards for families.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
