Best River Floats in Texas

There are so many fun things to do in Austin with kids. And when we visited over spring break, one of the things I was adamant about doing was river tubing, so I wanted to know where the best river floats in Texas were.

My research showed me that there are many excellent floating rivers in Texas, each for their own reasons. While we were in Texas, we checked out some of these tubing rivers in Texas. Most of these we did for free on our own, but we also paid to do a Texas Tubes river float down the Comal River so we could do the famous Tube Chute as well.

Tubing rivers in Texas is extremely popular and certain spots can be very busy, especially on weekends and during the college spring breaks. When we were there, it wasn’t busy yet, so it was definitely a family-friendly environment more than a party scene. I can’t promise that’s how it is at all times, however I’ve spoken with several locals who say they just try to avoid holiday weekends and spring break, but the rest of the time is not too crazy.

If river tubing isn’t in the cards for you, these Austin-area family resorts and Dallas family resorts have some amazing lazy rivers and waterslides that will entertain your kids. We loved the JW Marriott Waterpark Resort in San Antonio.

Here’s a list of some of the best river floats in Texas I have found.

Best River Floats in Texas: On the Comal River

Best River floats in Texas: The Comal River.

The Comal River, located in New Braunfels, is popular for river floats in Texas. The water stays a cool 70-72 degrees year round, making it refreshing on a hot summer day. Plus, this three-mile long float has a lot of shade.

As you float down the Comal, you’ll pass the famous Schlitterbahn water park, but our favorite part was the tube chute, which is like a small rapids ride on the river. Aside from the three tube chutes (one large one and two smaller ones), the rest of the float is very slow and calm.

Best Rivers in Texas: The Guadalupe River

The Comal River and the Tube Chute are one of the most popular and best river floats in Texas.

The Guadalupe River might just be the most popular spot for river floats in Texas, and for good reason. This crystal-clear river runs through Hill Country and, depending on where you start, can give you a refreshing 2-hour, 3-hour or even 6-hour float. The most popular route on this river is the Horseshoe Loop, and you can find several companies that offer tube rentals and shuttle services.

San Marcos River

The spring-fed San Marcos River goes through the college town of San Marcos, Texas, and is located about 30 minutes south of Austin. Besides tubing, the San Marcos River is also a popular spot for kayaking. When we were there, the kids enjoyed seeing lots of turtles in the water.

There are many great Airbnbs in this area. The one we were staying at was right on this river, and made it extra convenient to access.

Tubing Rivers in Texas: The Blanco River

The Blanco River is another popular river float in south Texas. The best tubing on this river is the stretch that goes through the Blanco State Park. You’ll be able to enjoy a calm, relaxing float while taking in some beautiful, scenic backdrops. And because of the many shores and alcoves, this is a popular tubing spot for families and kids to enjoy picnics on the shore.

Frio River

If you’re seeking the best rivers to float in San Antonio, you’ll definitely want to check out the Frio River. Located about an hour west of San Antonio, the Frio River is one of the most popular rivers to float in San Antonio area. And, it’s one of the most scenic. You’ll enjoy miles of beautiful Hill Country scenery while cooling off in some frio (Spanish for cold) water.

South Llano River

The section of South Llano River that’s located in the state park is one of the best river floats in Texas for families. You can hop in here for a 2-mile float. Or, splash around the shallow river banks by the bridge near the park entrance. The slow-moving waters here are great for all ages. And, it tends to be a less-crowded tubing spot than some of the other locations.

Trinity River

If you’re in the Dallas area, the Trinity River is a great option for tubing. And, if you tube between the months of June and August, you might catch a Rocking the River concert where you can enjoy live music while you float.

Marriott Marquis, Houston – Another one of the Best River Floats in Texas

For a different kind of river tubing experience, check out the unique lazy river at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston. This lazy river is the shape of Texas and is something the whole family will love. You must be a guest of the hotel to enjoy the lazy river. Or can purchase a day-use wristband if available.

Tips for Tubing Rivers in Texas

  • Wear lots of sunscreen, as there isn’t always a lot of shade on the rivers.
  • Alcohol is permitted in many areas, but often not inside of state parks. Check before you go.
  • No glass or styrofoam is permitted in any of these tubing destinations.
  • Avoid black tubes as they get very hot and can burn you.
  • Choose a tube with cup holders and a bottom if you plan to enjoy a few beverages on the river. You can toss your empty cans in the tube bottom until you reach the shore.

We loved our spring break in Texas and would love to go back. Check out these other family-friendly spring break destinations for even more fun options.

Thanks for reading my post. My name is Jaime and I am a mom to three busy children. When we're not at the soccer and football fields, we try to get away as often as possible. I'm a teacher and my husband is a firefighter, so we mostly get away for long weekends or over the school breaks. I hope to inspire busy families to take time to recoup and relax while making memories on camping trips or cruise ships, or at the fancy resort pool--we love it all!
